I've had this book for 50 years. It was too much to digest when it was given to me by a renowned palaeontologist when I was a kid, but I kept it, perhaps because it was given to me by a renowned palaeontologist but because I knew I would get to it one day. It did not disappoint. Well written, despite the crunchy words and full of excellent illustrations, it tells the story of Earth's flora and fauna from the single cells through to sabre tooth tigers. Only humans are not spoken of in any great detail, which is fine. I am left with the impression that Mildred Fenton is perhaps the unsung hero here, I don't know why. There is a glossary (necessary), books for further reading (maybe one day) and tips and techniques for fossil hunting (which makes this book and its field instantly accessible). Perfect for a twelve year old. Because they might keep it for fifty years, and that is perhaps the best measure of a book's success.

I first read this book when I was fourteen and really enjoyed it.

This book is a wonderful one-volume edition.

My favourite section involves the Brachiopods.
