This book had been on my radar for a while before I picked up a copy to read. A few reviewers had said they thought it would be a book I would enjoy and they were absolutely right! It had all my favourite elements for a police procedural and I devoured it within a matter of hours.

The Scottish crime thriller scene is huge at the moment but Jackie Baldwin has written a self assured debut that has slotted into the current market as if she had been around for years. Her fictional detective DI Frank

Dead Man’s Prayer – A Stunning Debut

DI Frank Farrell knew that returning to his hometown of Dumfries was sure to bring back memories, most of which he would rather forget. But when the local parish priest is murdered, Farrell, a former priest, will do everything he can to catch the psychotic killer regardless of his personal feelings for the victim. But is Farrell's troubled past with the Church a key factor in the case? And when the abduction of two little boys occurs soon after, is there any connection? As the past returns to ha ...more

This was a cracking book with a rather different chief protagonist. DI Frank Farrell is a former priest who returns to his hometown of Dumfries to join the relatively small force there. His first case however is unfortunately the murder of a priest. Even more unfortunate is that it is someone that Farrell knew and disliked intensely. Still, he intends to conduct a professional investigation as no one deserves to be murdered like that. There are no clues to be had so its a hard slog and old fashi ...more

DI Frank Farrell has just returned to his hometown in Dumfries from Edinburgh. He meets his boss DCI Lind. He knew Lind from before and is glad to see him, but he is now married to his old love, and that’s not so good. He also meets DI Kate Moore. He also meets DS Stirling, DS Byers and DC McLeod.

Word is received that a murder has been committed at St. Aidan’s. An elderly priest named Father Boyd was the victim. Frank knows Boyd from before. He was the one who drove him out of the prie

A fast-paced, intriguing crime thriller with a fresh feel.
I especially liked the characterisation. Each character was distinctive with their on personal baggage and felt real and believable in the way they related to one another. And what an interesting central character. An ex-priest turned detective with a dark past. A brilliant start for a series.
The writing throughout was superb and the twisting plot well thought out.
And the litmus test - will I read the second book in the series? I resoundi

I really enjoyed this debut book. The set-up felt fresh and original, the characters were mostly well-developed (Mhairi was a particular favourite of mine) and the conclusion galloped along at a great pace. I did find the first quarter or so a little slower than the rest of it but once the secondary investigation started there was no looking back. It was a roller coaster from then on!

I will definitely be looking out for Jackie's next book!

Layers upon layers of mysteries unfold between the pages of Baldwin’s debut novel Dead Man’s Prayer.

DI Frank Farrell is one of the most interesting characters I’ve read in a long time. He is a complex man and reluctant hero whose past catches up with him, leading to many surprising twists. The plot thickens for readers and Farrell as more about his life and family comes to fruition. Baldwin is a master at slowly peeling back the layers on all of the characters and cleverly led me by the nose wi

Frank Farrell was a priest and is now a Detective Inspector returning to his hometown of Dumfries. That in itself lets the reader know that this is not a run of the mill police procedural. This is far more. Baldwin intertwines the investigations of a priest’s murder and the kidnapping of twin boys with Farrell’s own chequered past. What a challenge she set herself. Farrell isn’t the standard hard drinking, heavy smoking DI on the path to self-destruction – he’s an honourable man who trained to b ...more

I was born in Dumfries and for a long time lived in Lockerbie but am far from hom now. I thought this book would bring back the memories but it didn’t really dwell on the area too much.
As we know it is essential that detectives are unhappy people with so much baggage from their past you’d think they wouldn’t be able to hold down a job. Meet DI Frank Farrell, ex priest and now newly moved back to Dumfries. His superior hates him, and his best friend from schooldays is his immediate boss.

Dead Man’s Prayer is Jackie Baldwin’s debut novel, which is really hard to believe as it is a very assured and gripping debut novel.

Dead Man’s Prayer is a crime thriller with as much pace and depth as any of the popular ones out there today. Following DI Frank Farrell as he returns to his home town in the wake of a heinous murder, it takes a dark and sinister turn with the disappearance of twin little boys.

I found myself gripped early on. I really enjoyed the way the author wrote this story, esp

I couldn't put it down

I've chose to rate this book with 5 stars as I'm quite the crime novel fan so much so that i've usually guessed the killer before its revealed. Dead man's prayer had me puzzled from the get go and admittedly, i had to stop myself from reading the last chapter in eagerness to find out! obviously, i never did this and simply could not put it down to find out where the book was going next. Dead man's prayer has many twists and turns making it exciting, thrilling and never know

I read the second book first (Perfect Dead) so came to this knowing some of the backstory and this more than filled in the gaps. Frank Farrell is an interesting character having been a Catholic Priest but who has changed career and joined the police. In this book he is establishing himself in his hometown of Dumfries and establishing himself with us. It's a great tale from the off (although you do question some of his decisions about what is relevant and what is not to the investigation). A tale ...more

I have always enjoyed a good detective story and I really enjoyed this novel, the first in the DI Frank Farrell series, by Jackie Baldwin. What made the story even more interesting for me was that DI Frank Farrell is an ordained Catholic Priest who left holy orders to become a police man. Secondly that the novel was set in Dumfries, Scotland made it even more interesting.
Jackie Baldwin has written an excellent gripping novel with many twists and turns and a dramatic ending. I won't give the plot

I thoroughly enjoyed this character-driven mystery. I find police procedurals are all the better for having a main character who has an interesting backstory which is revealed as the plot unravels. DI Farrell is a complex, likeable man who together with his team finally catch their man after a truly horrific manhunt. I can't wait to read the next book!

Great start to a new series

Oh what a great book. DI Farrell is such an intriguing character. I read the second book in the series and enjoyed it so much I had to read this one. I am so glad I did.

It has a great story line with enough twists and turns to keep you hooked til the end!

Look forward to reading many more from this author.

I persevered to the end with this one, but not sure I'm ready to continue the relationship with DI Frank Farrell, former (?) priest. Not being a catholic, and being an atheist, there was just way too much religion in this book. I'm not against religion in novels, but this kept getting in the way of what could have been gripping suspense.

Jackie's words had my attention within the first page of her book. This was an chair gripping excitable read! The characters were will created with a tendency to be the kind that stays with the reader long after finishing the book. Jackie's plot is so thrilling with the twists and turns brought into the plot at the right moment when it is least expected and keeps the reader wanting more.

DI Frank Farrell returns to his hometown of Dumfries having worked for many years in Edinburgh. He's no sooner back than the parish priest is murdered in his Church, in this quiet town which doesn't usually see much by the way of serious crime. Soon after, twin boys are abducted and Frank begins to suspect there is a connection between the cases. Not only that, as the case goes on he begins to suspect that he too may be connected to the cases. You see, Frank is an ex-priest himself and used to a ...more
