It was 1995! I'm working on another book now, and it was hard to select the heroine from my list -- but both times I was motivated to explore a real character about whom little is known. Much more room to maneuver, for the writer. This second novel is about a woman whose name isn't even sure, nor her mother's name, although her father is notorious. (less)

I read this book because it was written by the sister of one of my daughter's classmates. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style. Matilda's voice has an authentic medieval flavor, and the introduction of the troubadour's writings adds interest and verisimilitude. Unfortunately, the premise of the novel - Matilda's lifelong sexual obsession with her cousin Stephen - was too much for me to swallow. I realize the book is fiction, but my preference is for historical fiction to stick as close to know ...more

The infatuation with Stephen disgusted me beyond reason. It was absolutely unnecessary and took away from what could have been a good book.

As the book's author, I am partial to it, of course :) But those of you who love traveling back in time, who love romance, who are interested in English history, who appreciate careful research into setting, manners and morals, who are willing to hear some poetry and some philosophy and who are fascinated by 'magic' (as much of herbal science and physics and astronomy was then understood) should find my novel suited to your taste. Matilda Empress has been described as 'Game of Thrones' meets 'Do ...more

This is the story of Matilda Empress, who became leader of the Holy Roman Empire at a very young age. At 24, she finds herself a widow, and is sent back to England to her father's estate. There she is drawn to her cousin Stephen, but he is married to another. She knows it is wrong to want him, but she cannot help herself. Matilda is soon married to another, but Stephen leads Matilda on, pursuing her even across borders. Matilda has a hard time saying no, even though she knows her duty is to be t ...more

3.5stars: Twelvth century european/brithish historical fiction. This book was really pretty good except that I immensley disliked the two major chcarcters in much of this book and most the secondary characters as well. A historical fiction narrtive told by Matlida Empress who loves an unworthy foe, and because she is a woman, is treated as a second class royal for much of this book. Though fictional, I believe many of the historical details are taken from fact. War is a dirty and greedy mess, an ...more

If you are a fan of historical fiction and stories of strong women in history, you will love this book. The story of the Empress Matilda will outrage you on behalf of women everywhere. The men in Matilda's life continuously attempt to make her their pawn, but she thwarts them with whatever weapons she has available to her. As a woman in the 12th century, her weapons must consist only of her powers of persuasion and her cunning mind. This book will remind you that even the most powerful women are ...more

The attention to detail in this novel is amazing - I felt like I smelled her world! Even being pretty familiar with English history and the fights over ascension to the throne, I knew very little about Matilda's story and this novel brought it to light with keen insight into her world. Throw in a sordid love story and you have the makings of great historical fiction. If you like historical fiction, you should add this to your list!

I really wanted Matilda to be more pleasant. I’ve read about her in history books and always rooted for her. But this book portrayed her as an arrogant snob.

If you are a historical fiction fan, you don't want to miss this book. The old English style of writing takes a bit to get into, but if you stick with it, you will not regret it. It is a fantastic story.

The story is about Matilda, who comes in to the throne at a very young age. Widowed by the age of 24 and forced to return to her father's estate, she finds herself attracted to a man she cannot have. Matilda is treated like property and used as a pawn by the very people who are supposed to love

I know very little about the history of this time period and therefore can't attest to any period discrepancies.

I enjoyed Matilda Empress. The diary-like approach was accessible and easy to follow as the time shifted forward. However, I always felt like an outsider looking in. There was no connection established between protagonist and reader. Therefore at times, the novel simply wasn't mentally engaging. That being said though, I did enjoy the story as a whole.

I received this book as part of

Detailed

While I don’t know enough to judge this work on merits of historical content, I can say that it’s detailed characters brought history to life. Some of the segments lagged a bit, but there was a lot of ground to cover. If you enjoy history, or narratives of strong women, this is a good book.

I truly love historical fiction and this did not disappoint! I loved how involved I became with the characters and the story. I can’t believe that the author had trouble getting this published!

I have been interested in Matilda, daughter of England's Henry I and mother to Henry II, for decades. And I’ve read quite a few historical novels about her. All of them, including this one, tend to suffer from the same problem - too much detail about 17 years of civil war. It always becomes tedious.

During the civil war years Matilda and her cousin Stephen fought over the throne of England, it was the English that suffered most. Continual battles. Nobles switching their loyalties back and forth,

I just finished this book and loved it! I liked the mix of romance and history and the female protagonist was a great heroine whom I could relate to to despite the centuries between us.

I have a permanent soft spot for Eleanor of Aquitaine, so her characterization rang false for me. Otherwise, a solid read!

The writing of this book was poorly done. Not only was Matilda unrelatable, there were multiple typos and grammatical errors. The story dragged on and I could not wait to finish just to be done with the whole thing. Would not recommend this book.
