For many of us it is the ultimate fear: to die alone. Loneliness is a difficult subject to address because it has such negative connotations in our intensely social world. But the truth is that wherever there are people, there is loneliness. You can be lonely sitting in the quiet of your home, in the still of an afternoon park, or even when surrounded by throngs of people ...more

Ive started reading this book on a on and off basis over the last month. Lars Svendsen addresses the subject of loneliness and explores both negative and positive sides of this emotion, something we all experience at some point in our lives.
Since the start of university, Ive experienced several interaction with other students in which this topic comes up of feeling 'lonely'. The more it came into conversations the more curious I got of questioning why we feel this way.
The book is highly fascina

"U samoći raste ono što tko u nju donese, i životinja u čovjeku."

"Usamljenost ima svojstvo disfunkcionalnosti, a zbog nje i drugi osjećaji postanu disfunkcionalni."

Anatomija, fiziologija, patofiziologija i patologija usamljenosti. Nešto mi se više sviđa zadnja trećina knjige, a osobito promišljanje o osamljenosti.

"tek başına geçirdiğimiz zaman başkalarıyla olan ilişkimizle, onlarla dünyada nasıl en iyi yaşayacağımızla ilgilidir" cümlesi kitabın anlatmaya çalıştığı şeyi özetliyor. tek başınalıkla yalnızlık arasındaki farka kitabın farklı bölümlerinde değinen Svendson, tek başına olabilmenin kişinin olgunluğuyla yakından ilişkili olduğunu söylüyor.
kitapta yalnızlığa ilişkin dünyadan istatistikler, diğer kavramlarla ilişkisi üzerine de bilgilendiren düşündüren anlatılar bulacaksınız. çevirinin güzelliğini de

To have a more clear understanding as to what actually "loneliness" is, this book really helps. It clarifies what loneliness is from many aspects, as a personality trait, or in a social setting, how it can actually enhance one's life when it is practiced as a tool to get to know yourself and your place in this world, free from social distractions. This is where it gets the most interesting for me. Oh.. And it starts by referring to the beautiful song of Moondog.

A Philosophy of Loneliness is a fairly smooth read as far as philosophy goes, and raises interesting questions as to what loneliness is.

Chapter 5: ‘Loneliness, Friendship and Love’ is worth the price alone. Svendsen’s analysis of modern notions of romantic love and its contribution to loneliness (and disappointment) is fantastic.

The book totally broadens horizon on loneliness in comparison with the concepts of solitude and aloneness. Even, the author gives perfect references to Bernard Russell, Jean P. Sartre, Albert Camus, Nietzsche... and the other worthwhile philosophers. In sum, must-read.

Some good insights, but disappointing overall. Too thinly discussed. Seldom straying from familiar territory. Could have investigated the theme of 'trust' more deeply.

Short yet packed with diverse philosophical insights on the subject matter. A valuable read that shows us the responsibility we have on managing our solitude and our relationship with others.
