This is a social and administrative history of the Byzantine army, not a military history. It is densely packed with detail and analysis, and is by no means a quick read.

Bartusis divides his work into two parts; part one is a historical overview on how the army was used as an instrument of policy beginning with the Nicaean period until the fall of the city in 1453. Shelves: history-medieval
This was also a quick read despite its detail. Most of it is a history politics and warfare. The late Byzantine Emperors had little real strength and most of it was focused towards wars. The author does an excellent job describing the personalities and technology involved.
