It was the events of 9/11 that made me question what I was doing with my life. I was then 38 and it was shortly after my 20th anniversary high school reunion. I knew that people who were the most satisfied with their work were people who saw a direct and immediate connection between what they did and the impact thereof. I also knew came to realize that I enjoyed learning by doing the most. So I started to plan my exit from journalism and into nursing. The beginning of a new recession in 2009 accelerated my plans to leave. And then, last month, there was the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Now, more than ever, I feel that it behooves everyone to be versed in skills usable in an environment where resources will be more scarce in the next 20 years. It's with that in mind that I purchased Preparing Nurses for Disaster Management by Joanne Langan and Dotti James for self-directed study. I found it comprehensive and very useful and I highly recommend it.
