“The Dolls told me: We know you as you really are, and you’re OK by us.”--Morrissey, from his Afterword
Formed in New York City in 1971, the New York Dolls prefigured Punk, New Wave, and Glam Metal Rock with their over-the-top style and their ingenious sound, setting the tone for many rock bands that would later come on the scene. Comprised of singer David Johansen, guitar

Great collection of Bob Gruen's photography (both concert shorts, portraits, and pictures from various tours) of the New York Dolls. I love that this book has a fantastical satiny-y hot pink cover that fits the whole trash/luxe New York Dolls aesthetic so well. I was kind of taken aback at some shots of Johnny Thunders wearing a leather jacket with a swastika on it, but maybe that's just misguided punk shock value that has aged extremely poorly? I hope so.

Also, this book answered a question tha

Nine years into the new millennium and we’re all suddenly and inexplicably once again just tourists on the spinning planet New York Dolls, Big Apple dreamers who went to the edge of teen-beat stardom and looked down, content to lift a few drinks, crank a few chicks, and wreck a couple of hotel rooms. Anything greater would have been just too much hassle.

Their reputation is based as much on their cross-dressing, mutant Revlon cover girl good looks and radiation-mutated R&B sonics as the copi

New York Dolls Photographs by Bob Gruen
(www.abramsimage.com)

This book is the perfect companion to the DVD
All Dolled up that contains the films Bob Gruen
made of the New York Dolls. This is a nice heavy
weight coffee table book of Bob's great dolls
photos in both black and white and colour and is
bookended by interviews with David Johansen and
Sylvain Sylvain conducted by Lenny Kaye and a
afterword by Morrisey. I have seen a fair few of
these photos before but there are still some

Recommends it for: those who love "Trash"
Bob Gruen is not my favorite technical photographer, but god was he ever in the right place at the right time. He specialized in photographing John Lennon during his NYC years, as well as the total fab and super genius New York Dolls.

This book pretty much captures the beginning of the Dolls to the end. There is a great interview with David Johnansen as well as a witty afterword from NY Dolls fan no. 1 Morrissey. I would recommend this book to those who are a fan of the Dolls, as well as for thos

I have been thinking about New York music scene in the 1970's lately. I recalled one of the members of KISS saying they went to see the New York Dolls and then knew what they wanted to be on part of the music scene. Found it rather amusing to see Shaun Cassidy in one of the many pictures. Yes, I would like very much to say that the New York Dolls were pioneers of the punk, glitter, glam scene. Bob Gruen did a great job in capturing a moment in time.
