He spent most of his adult life doing research and writing on aircraft and aviation. He was the author of over 350 books and articles. His work included many books published by Salamander Books.

Published in 1977, 'F-4 Phantom' is the first in the 'Modern Combat Aircraft' series by publishers Ian Allan, and what an excellent starter it is. The detail provided is very informative, and is ably supported by over 120 photos and other illustrations.
