In Berlin endet für Stella die vielleicht schönste Zeit, aber dafür beginnt ein aufregendes Leben: Sie arbeitet als Mannequin für ein Berliner Modehaus, wird zur Weltenbummlerin. Doch von einem entfernt sie sich immer mehr: von der Liebe des Mannes, bei dem sie eine Heimat finden kann.

Stella Termogen is my all time favorite book, and not just because I was named after it.
No matter how many times I've read it, the second I'm done I want to go right back to the first page and read it all over again. This is a story about the life of an extra ordinary girl living in extra ordinary times, ranging from a post WWI Berlin to a few years after World War II. Chronicling her coming of age with turbulent and, at times, inapropriate relationships, her moral and ethical quandaries indicative of the era and her transformation into a fascinating woman who has the strength to not give up despite all the adversities life throws at her; all that and more drew me into Stella's world and made me fall in love with her and long for even a fraction of her joie de vivre.

Wonderful novel about a woman, Stella, born in 1916 in Berlin, Germany, and even though she came from a very poor family, Stella finally ended up living with her uncle and his family on the picturesque isle of Sylt (it's like Nantucket).
During WW II Stella is lucky once more spending most of the war time years in Malaysia.
How she finally finds true love back in Germany is a very compelling story.
Highly recommended.

Een boek wat ik voor het eerst las toen ik een jaar of twaalf was en sindsdien heb ik het enige malen herlezen, nu voor het eerst in lange tijd weer. Natuurlijk heeft het zijn beperkingen, maar alles bij elkaar vond ik het toch wel weer de moeite waard. Het boek vertelt het verhaal van Stella, vanaf dat ze als jong meisje op het eiland Sylt terechtkomt en daar tot bloei komt en over haar omzwervingen voordat ze uiteindelijk haar bestelling vind. De tweede wereldoorlog en daaraan vooraf gaand, de opkomst van de Nazi's, speelt een belangrijke rol in het verhaal. Ik denk dat de schrijfster in haar beschrijving van het door bommen verwoestte Berlijn en de tocht van Stella er doorheen wel geïnspireerd is geweest door de beschrijving van de tocht van Scarlett door Atlanta tijdens het beleg ervan door Margaret Mitchell in Gone With the Wind.

Dieses Buch ist ein Phänomen. Ich mochte die Heldin nicht, die Handlung war teilweise unglaubwürdig oder vorhersehbar, das Ende hat mir nicht gefallen und trotzdem hat mich das Buch fasziniert. Wer es schafft, so zu schreiben, dass ich mit dem Lesen nicht aufhören kann, hat auch eine gute Rezension verdient. Wer einen schönen langen Liebesroman braucht und damit leben kann, dass das Frauebild der 50er nun mal so war, dem kann ich dieses Buch durchaus empfehlen.
