There are two books that I've read that have blown my mind and this is one of them. It's written so well. It's a view point I had never known about or considered. It's about the relationship between Heinrich Himmler and his personal physician Felix Kersten. It's an amazing story and everyone should know it. Dr. Kersten is an amazing human who took the most horrible job in history and turned it into a rescue mission. I would highly recommend it.

Amazing true story of the private doctor of Himmler, Hitler's righthand man. He becomes Himmler's confidant while treating the debilitating pain that he often has due to intestinal problems. He finds ways to talk Himmler out of plans that would have killed millions - including forcing everyone in Denmark to walk to Poland (resettling Denmark with Germans), buying up the food on the French black market to starve the French and feed Germany, blow up all of the concentration camps before the allies ...more

Fascinating and often unbelievable récit of the influence Félix Kersten had on Himmler during the war. I can't believe this/he is not more widely known about, and had to independently fact check through the book. Incredible. Sobering. Absorbing.

Although the story is fascinating, Kessel ruins it with his style which is simultaneously flat and overblown. A superfluity of adjectives is one of his lesser flaws. Also he is very uncritical of his subject who is presented as a totally bland kind of saint. Surely a man who managed to negotiate for hundreds of lives with someone like Heinrich Himmler had a lot more guile than the Kersten depicted here. By today's standards this wouldn't be considered journalism, nor does it succeed as a novel.

Kirsten, a massage therapist, in the late 1930s, began taking care of Himmler, Hitlers right-hand man, and relieved his stomach pain for five years. In the midst of treating him he got promises from Himmler to save both small and large groups of prisoners and even Jews.

It was fascinating to learn what Kirsten could achieve with his treatment even though he was suspected by many of the Nazis due to his influence on Himmler and often feared for his life.

Amazing and little known story of massage-therapist Dr. Felix Kersten and his relationship to
Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler. Kersten was able to save millions of lives during WWII with his
considerable influence over Himmler, and was secretly considered one of the most powerful men in
Germany. A fascinating story!

A lire absolument

Amazing story of a man I had never heard of who saved many people through his influence over Himmler. An alternative medicine practitioner who Himmler relied on he skillfully manipulated Himmler into sparing thousands who would not otherwise have been spared.

The story is amazing and worth the read. The writing (or perhaps the translation) is not as wonderful--a little slow especially in the beginning.
