The 58 stories of Rain Check explore the vast universes that exist within the 1,000 word confines of flash literature. The material leaps gracefully from the humorous, the heartbreaking, reverent, profane, carnal and the ethereal. Noe makes us feel bound in deeply personal moments and experiences that, in turn, tap into the unifying humanity that binds us all. Rain Check z ...more

This was great! As someone who's always been more drawn to writing short stories and flash fiction instead of full-out novels, I always had trouble finding these types of compilations that were able to remain consistent throughout.

Noe has the rare ability balance humor and seriousness within his stories. The writing style, therefore, is definitely one of the strongest aspects of this book. T
Absolutely brilliant—BRILLIANT! This book will be my go-to gift for holidays and birthdays and special occasions for this year and next. The writing is superb, the kind that makes me fall in love with words and the craft all over again. But it's not presumptuous, like so many 'good-writing' books are... This author doesn't strive for complexity or convoluted searches for meaning; the depth is there because it's intrinsic to his storytelling. It is a rare thing for an author so young to achieve t ...more

Levi Andrew Noe's writing is so assured and original. This is his debut collection and it's a beauty. I have to say I am very impressed with his publisher, Truth Serum Press's attention to detail in producing this collection. The cover is gorgeous. The book itself beautifully laid out and typeset. Noe divides the stories into 3 sections: "On Time and Place," "On Relations," and "On Mind, Body, Heart and Soul" which are pretty self-explanatory. Everything here is so fresh and bursting with a part ...more

Levi Andrew Noe is a modern-day Beat. The stories in Rain Check are meditative and mystical, his characters full of spirit. From the streets of suburban Colorado to the rivers of the Himalayas, Noe makes you feel the wanderlust, backpack straps tugging at your shoulders, the hunger to connect with all that’s come before and all that’s yet to come.

The stories in this collection are arranged into three sections. The first, “On Time and Place,” is followed by “On Relations” and “On Mind, Body, Heart and Soul.” Most (maybe all, depending on your working definition) of these stories fall under the category of flash fiction – short, short stories, sometimes only a hundred words. In theory it could be even less although I believe these stories were all about that length or longer.

Flash fiction often requires more of the reader, making them fill

This is a very quick read, but I'd recommend reading it at a slower, more savoring, pace. I tend to gulp books down at a rapid rate, but for this book, I often stopped my forward progress to go back and re-read a story, just so I could prolong the enjoyment. (Sometimes more than once.)

What can I say? Much like a talented artist uses brushes and paint to create works of enduring art, so, too, does this author skillfully use just the right words and just the right phrases to create enduring memora

The thing that strikes me the most throughout all the different kinds of stories is how Noe handles the flash form. I always look for flash that can bring forth a narrative emotional singularity. In flash, as I see it, an author has room for one "note." That may not seem like the same note throughout a flash piece due to reveal, surprise, and other structural aspects, but it's all still the "sounding" and "resonation" of only one "bell." Either each word, each image, each everything ties complet ...more

Rain Check is a diverse range of stories that moves the reader in all sorts of emotional directions. Some stories are funny, some are sad, some a philosophical, but they all demonstrate the power of flash fiction: the ability to make an impact in only a few hundred words. I am especially impressed that Noe doesn't rely on the cheap gimmicks that can sometimes hurt a first story collection; rather, he relies on good storytelling and clear, concise writing. The result is a quick but engaging journ ...more
