This series has been my favorite cozy mystery series and I am sad to read that the series is ending with this book. I am not going to write a synopsis of the plot as others have done so. I want to relate why this book and this series was my favorite. It is mainly due to Ellery Adams creative and original writing. She does not do cookie cutter plots and each book is different from other cozy mystery series. My favorite was Written in Stone. I felt it should have been up for an award the year it ...more

I enjoyed this series, but the author has flat out said, "Dear Readers, this is a public service announcement. Do not read Killer Characters if you can't handle a non Disney ending. It doesn't have one. It's not a fairy tale."

I don't need a Disney ending, but I don't need an ending that destroys everything I enjoyed about the series. So I shall take the author's advice, and not finish the book. I'd rather remember Olivia and Rawlings and the rest of the gang the way they were in previous books.

The zero stars are intentional.
If you have read the rest (or any of the rest) of this series, do not read this entry--which I fervently hope is the last. I have never before so wished I unread a book. Anything good was lost in the final few chapters. If someone could somehow make it as though I'd never read the book and would never again even be tempted to pick it up, I wouldn't hesitate to pay that person $100 on the spot.
This series has always been a little darker or more

Well this was a crappy way to presumably end the series. I wasn't a fan of the mystery since it was connected to adultery. But then the ending, while it did make me tear up, felt like a massive cop-out. It was messy and unfulfilling and made me wonder why I invested so much time in these characters only to have a shit ending. The last time I got this mad at a book's ending was One Day. I know life is one big happy end, but come on. This was definitely the weakest book in the series, plot wise. ...more

Killer Characters had me hooked from the first chapter. Ellery pens relatable, real-life characters that make you care. The plot was outstanding and filled with drama for this last book in this series.

This was the first book I read in the series and it being the last I don't regret reading it. It was heart felt and suspenseful. Get some tissues handy you will need them.
Sometimes series end despite their popularity or the wishes of their authors. That is the case for this series, ended by the publisher. But despite everything, this book represented all that the reader expects from Books by the Bay...a murder, a mystery with twists and turns, and trials and tribulations for several main characters. Throughout the series, it has been enjoyable to watch the growth of Olivia as she comes to grips with her own insecurities, and learns to develop true friendships. ...more

Killer Characters is the eighth book in the Books By The Bay Mystery series.

I always look forward to spending some time with Olivia and Rawlings and the Bayside Book Writers group in Oyster Bay, NC. I have to say that Ellery Adams is a wonderful storyteller and Killer Character is well-plotted and excitingly told story.

Mystery was very good, but the ending sucked. Apparently, this is the end of the series, and the author felt compelled to ruin all it. I wish I would have read the reviews before starting the book, but I wanted to find out who the culprit(s) was (were), so I kept on. I'm very annoyed though. What a crappy ending.

Ellery Adams's eighth and final book in her Books by the Bay series, Killer Characters, is a powerful conclusion to the series. Laurel, one of the Bayside Book Writers where Olivia Limoges has found a family, is dealing with the impending death of her mother-in-law and leans on Olivia for help. While at Laurel's parents-in-law's house, Olivia overhears a conversation that makes her suspect that Steve, Laurel's husband, may be cheating on Laurel with the palliative care nurse. Stars: Overall 5 Narration 5 Story 5

Intrigued by the buzz about this author, and the title of this book, I was curious to try another new to me series, and I have to say I was not disappointed. Meeting the characters at the apex of their journey, while presenting them as complete and developed, also gives an opportunity to see just how the author chooses to conclude. And I will say that the conclusion of this story, even to my new to the series perspective was wonderful

I have enjoyed reading all of Ms. Adams' books and this one is no different. She tackles some difficult subjects and the differing ways people respond. It isn't always pretty, and readers who are expecting sunshine and roses may want to look elsewhere. But it is well written and honest.
Olivia's friend Laurel is accused of killing her husband's mistress, a hospice nurse helping care for Laurel's mother-in-law. Olivia and Millay do their own investigating to prove Laurel's innocence. Along the

This was a tough one, I think because I knew it was the last one in the series and because I had read some of the prior "bad" reviews and Ms. Adams' classy response to them. Clearly, there is more here than words on a page. Authors are artists and how they express themselves can be quite personal. The book was well written and though some had very, very strong feelings about how it ended (there are plenty of spoilers out there but I won't be one of them), it is what it is.

I really enjoyed this

Ellery Adams' Books by the Bay cozy series has been a favorite of mine since its inception. The ensemble cast, the coastal North Carolina setting with its rich history, mouthwatering food, and some fine mysteries to solve have made these books something very special. When I came to the end of Killer Characters, I knew without heading to Amazon to read reviews that many readers would be outraged. If you haven't read this last book in the series and you'd like to leave the characters surrounded by ...more

The Books by the Bay series has ended with a bang. Well Done Ellery Adams, well done. However, this one is most definitely not so Cozy.
If one reads my previous reviews, they will show that in the beginning, Olivia was NOT my favorite character.. In fact, in the beginning, she was so off putting, so cold and such a snarky snob, I almost stopped reading the series. At the end she has become kind and a much nicer person. Ellery Adams also allowed all of her other characters to grow and develop.

There are books that are simple to review and then there are books that are very complex to review for many different reasons. Killer Characters is out now and it is book 8 in the series. The Books by the Bay Series is loved by so many, I myself am a huge fan of Ellery Adams and her characters in the "Bayside Book Writers". When you get a book such as Killer Characters and the chance to review it you don't want to spoil the plot for those anxiously awaiting their turn, I ask you to allow me to ...more

So. I need to start this review off by saying how impressed I am with Ms. Adams professionalism. I've read ALL of her books and yes, this one was hard to stomach. But, I get why she did it. This is the last book in the Books by the Bay series, and she wanted finality. Below you will find her note from Facebook that came after SCATHING reviews from readers. Just because a book doesn't end the way you want it to, don't punish the author with bad reviews. I saw those who said they'd never read ...more

KILLER CHARACTERS is a wonderful mystery that is the essence of the author, Ellery Adams.

When I opened this book, before I even started reading the story, my eyes fell upon the words . . . To You, Dear Reader. The eloquent words that followed in this letter to us, had tearing gliding down my face as I realized Ellery Adams was bidding the Book by the Bay Mysteries a fond farewell. Yet, within that sadness, she promised us new adventure.

In this eighth installment of the series, Ms. Adams has

Extraordinary writing, with great descriptions of setting and characters. This is more than the usual mystery being solved by the Bayside Book Writers. It is a look at trust, trust betrayed, relationships built and destroyed and the resilience and forgiveness all can find. It shows evil greed using any means to achieve a selfish gain. At the end, once you thought it had all been nearly wrapped up, a shocking ending changes it all.

From the author's intro to the end, there is every reason to

I love Ellery Adams. She never shies away from writing complex characters and smart plots. She has never failed to push the boundaries of the cozy genre. Olivia is original and has always been much more than a cozy mystery protagonist, and it is only fitting that her story ends in this series with heartache and hope. Reading the other reviews, it is easy to see that the ending has polarized readers, and I will not rehash it here. Was this whole book filled with raw emotion? Yes. Did I shed some ...more

I have been hooked on this series since the first book. Killer Characters book 8 of this series is an absolutely wonderful mystery. I did not want to put it down until the end! This cozy was intense, suspenseful, heartwarming and emotional. Yes, Ellery Adams got me crying and laughing with them.
Hearing this was the last book of the series, I took a while before sitting down to read it knowing when I finished that I would miss Oyster Bay, the Bayside Writers, and Captain Haviland.

#8 in this series keeps all of the regular writers group characters and some other regulars in place and throws in murder, thievery, betrayal, alcoholism, hospice care, and writer's block to keep readers very busy. It is very important to read the author's note found at the beginning of the book, because it provides foreshadowing for what is going to happen. I rated it a 5, because the book is well-written and, most importantly, love, hope, and family are the winning powers.

Cry you will

This is one of my favorite series. Ellery Adams is one of my favorite authors. Not just because she spins a great tale, but because she write with heart. When you read this book, you will feel the fear, greed, hurt and anger the characters do. You will laugh with them and cry for them. Your heart will break for them but just when you think all is lost a glimmer of hope will appear. There will be a silver lining. I hope this is not the last book in the series.

It is nearly Christmas and Laurel has discovered her husband is having an affair with a nurse caring for his mother. This fact sets off a chain of events which will end in heartbreak for Olivia Limoges. Olivia is consumed with proving Laurel did not murder the nurse but their seems to be little in the way of other suspects. The book was a quick easy read.
