Describes the different kinds of food and methods of cooking that had been common to Indians in each of five areas of the United States. Includes recipes.
The book is very whitewashed including the cover of the book. It feels like it's written from the colonizer's perspective. It's not an appropriate book for kids, especially in 2021.
The recipes don't have the authentic name of the foods being prepared.
Simple recipes with historical information on the foods and ingredients, make this a delightful book for young students. We were able to make the Indian Fry Bread recipe in the school library!
Nancy, a Seminole Indian girl, wonders what Native Americans ate before English settlers came to North America. “Did they eat hamburgers, pancakes, and ice cream, just like she did?” She travels to visit different tribes all over the United States to find out. There are brief explanations for tribes in the Southwest, the Pacific Coast, the Plains, the Northeast, and the South. It not only discusses Native Americans, but different climates across the country and what foods are best in each climate. The book also contains recipes that are “intended for a child to make together with an adult” which is an excellent, hands-on extension activity for kindergarten students.
