'68: Last Rites #1-5

'68 Volume 6: Last Rites

Rate this book
The greatest city in the world lies blanketed in ice and snow. There are no lights on Broadway, no taxis clogging the streets and the Empire State stands like a frozen tombstone blanketing a dead metropolis in its shadow. These are the Popsicle Fields...a labyrinth of New York streets littered with the frozen undead. This is 1970, two years since the rise of the cannibalistic dead. This is ’68: LAST RITES, the climactic sixth volume in the epic, award-winning military/horror comics series that brings all branching storylines to a close. From the fortified Flatiron Building, where a band of survivors holds onto life with a white-knuckled grip, to the battle-torn streets of Chinatown where the stiffening dead rise from subways filled with starving rats, an island off the Jersey coast where living horrors feast on human flesh...to the steaming jungles of Vietnam, where a hero will fall only to spawn an army of masked avengers who find retribution in his legend and a battle cry in his name. Collected here for the first time, this volume includes all four issues of the series finale along with the hard-hitting one JUNGLE GUTS ‘N GLORY, with tons of extras including a cover gallery, script notes and behind the scenes extras available nowhere else!

From writer MARK KIDWELL and artists JEFF ZORNOW and JAY FOTOS, ’68: LAST RITES closes the curtain on the saga of the rise of the living dead in the age of Aquarius and unleashes a plague of the hungry dead on a generation of the lost!

The series ended with more of a whimper than a bang. This series started out very strong but then weakened along the way. This was originally a story about zombies in Viet Nam during the way, which was an awesome concept. However, along the way the series drifted into just another zombie comic. Not a bad one really, just not the excellent one it was initially. Once the story got out of the jungles of Viet Nam there was a been there, done that feel to it. There was an explanation given to why the zombies were formed, something lacking in most stories.

I hate it this series didn't quite read its true potential but it was a pretty cool horror comic anyway.

The final volume of the living dead taking over the world of the Vietnam War. This is the mot dramatic, the most terrorizing series of graphic novels I have experienced, both because I lived through the Vietnam era and because it accurately reflects the horror of a world gone bad in every sense of the world. Highly recommended.

Great finale bringing the various survivors together for a last stand as they defend their position at New York's Flatiron Building. Many familiar faces including Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger, Evel Knievel and Charles Manson. Great story and art. Very highly recommended.

An utterly wild ride!

Has to be the best zombie/war graphic novels I've had the opportunity to view and the best reasoning (story-wise) behind as why it all happened. No spoilers.

5 STAR COMPLETE 6 VOLUME SERIES!

A massive departure from what we had grown to love over the first four tpb but tied up some loose ends with satisfying stories, just not in the package I wanted necessarily wanted.
