The Assassin's Trail

Rate this book
Two Assassinations That Appear To Be LinkedHomicide Detective Ryan Clark has a problem. A prominent businessman has been assassinated by a drive-by shooting. Two weeks earlier another man, in the same industry, was shot and killed. He suspects the assassinations are related and calls an old friend with the FBI. When FBI profiler Special Agent Sean Kruger arrives at the scene of the second murder, he agrees with Clark but is hesitant to get involved. After twenty-five years with the FBI, he is tired of the bureaucracy and politics of the job. His constant traveling has kept him away from the woman he loves and he is contemplating retiring to start a new life with her.

˃˃˃ The Assassin Strikes Close To HomeA week later, while home in Kansas City, the assassin strikes again, this time close to where he lives, making things personal. With the help of JR Diminski, the computer genius from The Fugitive’s Trail, Kruger identifies a suspect and travels to Alabama for the arrest.

˃˃˃ When Things Go From Bad To WorsePolitics and micromanaging complicate the situation. Kruger is ordered to wait but disobeys and proceeds with the arrest. When everything goes horribly wrong, he is suspended by the Director of the FBI. Now outside the protection of the agency, he must decide whether to walk away from his career or put his new marriage and life in danger by pursuing the assassin. An assassin whose ultimate goal is an attack in the center of the United States, an attack that will result in more innocent casualties than 9/11.

"A 5* read/listen."

I loved this book - I couldn't imagine it to be better than book 1 but it is!!.
An FBI thriller all the way this series is at the top of the genre.
Some times a narrator becomes the voice of a book series and Paul.J McSorley has done just that - I couldn't imagine anyone else as special agent Sean Kruger.

I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and voluntarily leave this review.

Cannot recommend this book highly enough, if I could give it more stars I would.

J.C. Fields used what he knew to write a fascinating thriller suspense novel. He splits his two greatest interests between the lead characters; Sean Kruger is an FBI special agent that specializes in psychology. JR is a computer wizard. But throughout the whole book you will find he uses the topics he knows best. His extensive travel is seen when Sean has to travel back and forth to different areas of interest. Plus weapons are used throughout the whole book while Sean tries to narrow down where the terrorist will strike next.
The Assassin’s Trail will keep you anticipating from chapter to chapter until the clash comes to a head. Sean is very careful to treat the people he works with in a kind and respectful manner, always trusting his gut. Therefore, he has multiple acquaintances throughout the nation at his fingertips willing to give him a helping hand in his investigation.
The system used by the terrorist to get a message to another individual is quite brilliant. The Assassin’s Trail is fast pace but realistic.

What a wild exciting ride that holds you spellbound from the drive by shooting that starts the book leaving you holding your breath asking why as the author lowly fills in the holes giving you a story that could be right out of the newspapers headlines. There is danger all around as first one person is shot and then another. The team is trying their best to fill in the gaps and find out what and who is behind it all, could this be one lonely man or is the plot bigger than anyone could guess? The author fills these pages with adventure of the unknown as the FBI Special Agent Sean Kruger turns to his old pal JR to piece together the puzzle as the world around them goes crazy. Homicide detective Ryan Clark goes to work with JR learning everything he can to find the footprints in the electrics they have found. The author holds you on the edge as the clues come in slowly and ex military set in motion a plot that could leave so many dead. Will they be too late to find the answers saving the marks that are to be taken out. What if they are wrong and thousands end up dead. This is a very exciting read with true emotions, as I was listening them working out about the motorcycle I was so drawn into the story that when a motorcycle past me I found myself wondering if he could be the killer. Shaking my head and telling myself I was being silly this was just a story and the poor man on the bike was just going home to his family. Knowing I was right didn’t stop my eyes from following him until he was out of sight.

The narrator does a wonderful job pulling the reader in giving a highly entertaining story making you hold your breath through all the danger and killing that holds you spellbound waiting to see where this will all lead. He knows how to show true emotion through his voice making the listener feel they are right there watching. His male voices are outstanding although some are close to others but you always know who is talking and what they are feeling. His female voices need a little work sometimes they sound more male than female. He pauses when he needs and speeds up to get the full excitement when it is called for. His normal voice is just as nice as his character voices, each of his character voices are smooth, clear as he gives it the right pitch to make you feel what the characters are feeling. There are no background noises, no volume changes, if any breaks were taken I could not tell. He really portrays the picture the author gave me by pulling you in through emotions and tones that holds your attention until the end.

I have no trouble at all in seeing this series made into a movie it would be filled with excitement, danger, adventure holding the watched in its grips until the end. I know I was so invested in this story that I didn’t want it to end. It was nice to see all the characters from the last story, meeting new ones and seeing how they all worked together. JR and Sean have been one of my favorites, I love how they work together, how JR pulls things out of thin air. There is a little drama that makes it realistic and believable a touch of family life just like a normal family with normal issues. Some new characters have been added to the mix as well as some that are not very smart that puts a little egg on the FBI’s face. I really loved the phone call when the director is talking to the president. I got a real big smile on my face and had no trouble picturing the faces of the agents and the big smiles they were wearing.

This is a great story filled with everything that makes a read exciting and a book you do not want to put down. I can see older teens and parents reading this comparing notes giving them some, one on one quality time pulling the family closer. If you like actions pack thrills with tons of excitement that has no trouble keeping you invested, then this is the story for you. I know I had a hard time putting it down.

This is a well-paced suspense story with some great characters. It's quite weak in the area of technology and requires some significant suspension of disbelief in that regard, but the plot isn't as far over the top as so many stories in this genre. The author's note at the end indicates that Fields likes to incorporate real locations in his novels. I like that, but I wish he'd do the same with the technology.

Paul J McSorley performs well and has found just the right voices for these characters. It's great that he's reading this entire series so far.

I also commend Fields for concluding his stories and refraining from the use of the dreaded cliffhanger. I still want to follow the characters into the next story.

NOTE: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Really only listening to these because I bought them 3 for the price of 1. The author is terribly wordy; saying in 15 words what can be said and implied in five. Also, the writing is repetitive. A thesaurus would do wonders. And really, there are other names out there than Tom, Bill, Bob, or Charlie. The author can come up with other names to use for additional characters.

I would also say that half of my like or dislike in an audiobook lies with the narrator. An amazing narrator can bring a mediocre audiobook to life. Unfortunately this did not occur here. As I start book 3, I still find that the narrator’s performance is very irritating.

One more to listen and done with these books. I won’t be picking up additional novels by Fields in the future.

I'm not aware of having read

Any of J.C. Fields books before today. I can assure you, it won't be the last. It's very fast moving. Blink and you miss a lot of information! This book moves at an incredible amount of speed, with tons of information. Being a woman, I'm usually in a coma, from so much technical and detailed information. But surprisingly, I did not feel overwhelmed, confused or bored, with any part of the book. There wasn't a lot of the story that wasn't related to the plot, but what was, identified the main characters As more human and relateable. This is a book I know my husband would really enjoy, as most men. I highly recommend this book, to everyone who enjoys a fast paced FBI thriller!

Atrocious editing!

The story lines are good, the characters are fairly well developed and one wants to cheer on the good guys to victory and see the bad guys go down. I do have to say there is a little too much politicizing going on.

However, the editing is cringe worthy! AND, the errors are not only glaring and distracting, even the most bare boned of editing programs should have caught the mistakes. I am surprised this author would keep releasing books with such shoddy editing. Such a shame too as the stories are basically good stories, a little drawn out here and there and a bit much cut and paste and obvious "filling" material, but, non-the-less a good read. I would recommend this series, with a warning regarding the editing.

Agent Sean Kruger continues with his investigations, this time delving into what initially seems to be two possibly unrelated homicides, but after delving into evidence, turns out to be a terrorist plot.

Follow Agent Kruger as he travels throughout the country, battling an inept agent in charge, a politically inspired cover up, and being just one step behind the perpetrators of what could be a heinous disaster.

Again, a well written story and also proving it is possible to weave a good story without profanity and gore. Well done, J.C. Fields!

Don’t mess with the U.S.

This was an interesting action story showing the development of Sean and the people around him. The book has good flow leading from one part to the next. These Sean Kruger books are more down to earth than other action books. The ending was great in showing what the U.S. did to people who hurt their citizens. People that want to do harm to others, just to satisfy their weak ideas of what life should be like or their on evil thoughts deserve only one ending. This is a well written book, that was enjoyable reading.

Kudos to J C Fields

I read all the Michael Wolfe books. Btw, when is 5 being released?😄 But then I hit pay dirt w/Sean Kruger! I want to compliment you on how your books grab you and suck you in. Also, having lived in the Springfield, MO, Bentonville & Fayetteville areas for 15 years, your research is amazingly thorough. I have always been leary of the Bobby Hopper Tunnel and even more so now! I can't wait to read the next book! Thanks so much for the entertainment!

This was another exciting adventure with FBI agent Sean Kruger. He is given very difficult cases and he is so talented that he figures them out. He sometimes has a misstep along the way, but in the end, he gets his man. This story involves a terrorist cell, among other bad guys. He also has a developing relationship with Stephanie that is nice to watch. I look forward to reading Book #3.

Excellent series

The Sean Kruger series is, without a doubt, one of the best series I have read in a long time. Both the first and second books take off like a shot and never slow down. The characters are brought to life in a very believable fashion. I'm getting ready to start book three !
