Hanging Pawns is the second book in the Fate series and it’s pretty much a prequel to the first book. It follows a girl named Mea, who we briefly met in the first book, after she leaves her home and heads out to college. She ends up being roommates with Molly and Morgan who are the sisters of the main protagonist from the first book, Sidney. Once I figured out how Mea connected with Sidney it was easy to follow what was going on. Some of the peripheral characters from Adjournment played a much larger role in this book. We spent a lot of time with the gorgeous triplets (Simon, Dean, and Chase), the twins Molly and Morgan, and GQ’s cousin Josh. So pretty much all the characters in this book were repeats from the first, they were just seen through Mea’s eyes and were a bit younger.
Josh was a really sweet character. He was abundantly patient with Mea and he had this uncanny ability to always be exactly where she needed him when she needed him. I really liked that they were neighbors. They were constantly hanging out due to their mutual connection to the triplets and the twins. Josh and Mea are technically the main characters of this book but I felt like they were really just a means to an end. Don’t get me wrong, their story was sweet and interesting but it really only seems to be there to further Simon and Sidney’s story, which I am dying to get the rest of! This story made me more curious about Mea and Josh’s families and how they tie in with the over arching story. There’s definitely more going on here than what we’re presented with.
This book was good and bad. I was a bit lost at first trying to figure out how Mea connected to Sidney but once I figured that out it was easy enough to follow. We were thrown this curveball part way through and it revealed a secondary connection between Mea and Sidney that I really wasn’t expecting. This book answered some of the questions I had after reading the first book but it also brought a lot more questions to mind. The author did a great job of giving out little morsels of precious information throughout the book. I would learn something new and revel in the afterglow of an answer to a question that had previously eluded me, only to realize there were now ten more questions in front of me. So far this series has created a fairly steady slow-burn of curiosity in me. I have just enough information that I think I know what’s going on but at the same time I have so many questions that I’m not confident at all of what’s going to happen!

My Review:
This is one of those special and happy occasions when the sequel outshines the debut. I am thrilled to report that Book 2 Hanging Pawns, is a vast improvement in the readability and quality of Ms. Vallis’s writing. The characters are far more likable, witty, and interesting as we are not seeing them through Sidney’s untrusting filter, but through Mea’s. I adore Mea and Josh as a couple, and also relished the dynamic between the other two couples. The mystery and intrigue continues to deepen Hanging Pawns with more clues and secrets being exposed. I couldn’t put this book down and enjoyed the clever dialog, bickering, and humorous banter, as well as all the twists and intersecting and overlapping of life spaces, and look forward to unraveling more surprises in the 2 remaining hefty tomes.

She did it again.....
This is the second book by this Author I have read and she does not disappoint!!'
Her characters are real and the emotions are heartfelt!!! She has beautiful, engaging characters who fill the pages with laughter,family, friendship and love. Enjoyed Mea and Josh's romance.
But I cannot wait for the continuation of Simon (my heart aches for him) and Sidney's story (first book I read from this author was their story, A MUST READ). Those toe are special.

The first book in this series left me pretty confused by the end, there were little hints dropped here and there but there were virtually no answers given. If you’re looking for answers in this book, you’re not going to find them either. I’ll admit that I am more confused than ever regarding the overarching plot of this series. This book isn’t even about Simon and Sidney, although Simon makes appearances and Sidney is mentioned. We do get some info that connects Mea to these two, but the picture is still very unclear to me. From what I hear, though, everything will come together in books 3 and 4, so we’ll see! All that being said, however, setting aside the overarching storyline, I actually enjoyed this book more than the first one because of Mea and Josh. It was easy to like Josh, he was funny, charming and a pretty great guy. I enjoyed his pursuit of Mea, they were very cute together. Of course, this is basically a novella so a lot of the development of their relationship was skipped over, but the parts we did get, I liked. I think the next book is back to Sidney and Simon, so we’ll see how this little detour ties back into that story once I start reading that one!

Hanging Pawns wasn't the story I expected but I've really enjoyed it.
This story helps us to understand and know better the characters of this series and Mea and Josh love journey is so cute they easily became two of my favorite characters.

“Hanging Pawns (Fate Series #2)” by Emersyn Vallis

If you are familiar with my review of the first book in this series then you will understand that I was a little frustrated at the ending…thus I started this one with a little bit of trepidation. I must say I was pleasantly surprised and a tiny bit confused. This story isn’t an actual sequel to “Adjournment” but rather a sort of prequel to the events of that one. Let’s call it a #0.5 instead of a #2. I actually had to refer back to the first book to double check who the two main characters were. That being said I absolutely LOVED this story. I honestly wish I had read this one before I read “Adjournment” because most of my questions regarding the backstory of Sidney and Simon are answered within these pages. So if you haven’t read either book yet I could actually recommend that you read this one first and I promise you will like “Adjournment” much better. If you’ve already read through the first book then dive right in to this one and get some serious enlightenment!
This installment centers on the characters of Mea and Josh, who played third string characters in the first book. By chance, Mea becomes the new roommate of Morgan and Molly and enters into friendships that will shape the rest of her life. After she meets Josh, standing in line at her new college, they embark on a journey leading them down a path Mea never thought possible. Will she open her heart and let him in or will her past come back to haunt her and ruin everything she’s worked so hard to build?
I love, love, love the character of Josh. He is pure devotion personified. His ability to anticipate Mea’s actions is uncanny and oddly romantic. Subtly wooing her and building a solid foundation, Josh knows just how to break down her walls. He’s smart, extremely funny, and an all-around great guy. I loved his interactions with the triplets (Simon, Chase, and Dean) and he seems to be the bit of gravity those guys need to keep them grounded. I don’t think I’ve ever met a male lead more deserving of a happy ending.
Mea is starting over. I love that she’s independent and unafraid to stand on her own. Yet, at the same time, you can sense a deep hurt and longing when it comes to her estranged family. She’s complex and raw and I found myself very invested in her. Like Josh, she’s the voice of reason for Molly and Morgan. They pull her out of her shell a little and she helps to rein them in. Together she and Josh are a couple worth the investment and definitely worth rooting for.
Vallis has really hit her stride when it comes to her writing. She’s quite fluid and the story moves along smoothly. I read this story in one sitting and it made me want to go back and reread “Adjournment” now that I have a little more information to go on. For a first time writer she’s getting better with each book and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

I love Mea and Josh!
With all family ties broken, Mea Andrews left her life behind with the rusty car she loves and the handful of clothes and possessions she was able to carry. The first official day of her new life was a bit rocky as she started college and immediately found herself without dorm housing as she had initially planned. As fate would have it, Mea meets Josh Anderson in the sign up line. Immediately, sparks fly as Josh seems to easily look behind her less-than-collegiate appearance and see her for who she really is. Little did she know that this chance encounter would bring richness to her life she could not imagine – love, friendship and family.
This is the second book in the Fate series and I loved it! This reads more like a prequel as events occur before book one’s timeline. If you have read the first book the characters in this installment will not be new though the focus is now on Josh and Mea. The background and history provided bring even more dimension and depth to the entire cast but especially Mea, Josh, Simon, Morgan and Molly. I honestly wished I’d read this story first as the “a ha” moments were many and filled in many blanks from Adjournment. The writing was as fluid and easy as the first novel, however, I found myself enjoying it even more. The interaction between all the characters was again filled with laughter and sarcasm but I always felt the love and kindness that percolated underneath. This story did not have a cliff-hanger and could be read as a stand-alone but, fair warning. The characters will worm their way into your hearts and you will definitely want to read more!

This book for me was a complete opposite of the first book in this series for me. I found myself struggling throughout most of Adjournment book 1 in the Fate Series. I do believe if I would of read this book first I would of had a much better reading experience with Adjournment.
With Hanging Pawns I was captured instantly. I really enjoyed the characters and I felt an instant connection.
I absolutely adored Mae Andrews. This girl has had it tough. He mother is pure evil.
While I found this story to be lighter than book one it still had its moments. Mae has been run down, put down, forgotten about, and ignored. Until one chance encounter with a very persistent man.

Yes I would definitely recommend this book.. However I would read this book first before venturing to the first book in the Fate Series

Well silly enough I didn't realize I was skipping book one and started with this book first. I'm in flove with this book.
I love mea, this poor girl grew up with the worst mother in the universe and so much less for a girl with money that could buy anything and everything.
Josh I would have loved to see more story from him and his "pre" Mea days but I may have missed that in book one.
For once I was kind of happy the author didn't just push these two directly into bed and off to hot sex scenes and scandal. This story is so cute and romantic and such a refreshing, lite read.
Although there is still drama and anguish, this is very well laid out and I appreciate how smooth the story line is.
My favorite part though is the surprise at the end.now I want to know in the coming books will mea and josh get the happy ever after filled with love that they both seem to long for or will bumps in the road occur and cause then trouble in the future?

I read book one, as that ended in a cliffy and went straight into this book, after reading a few pages i knew it was totally different character...so i did the unthinkable and went straight to book three, and left this one. So it might have spoilt it a little, but i understood it better.
So this is Josh and Mea's story. How they met, complete opposites that just gelled together. It was a quick read, but it explained a lot, and it tells you also how much Sidney (lead h in the other books) and Mea are closely linked.
This whole series has been a great read. Introduced me to a new author. definitely will be reading more of Emersyn Vallis.

I loved book one , Adjournment so I was really looking forward to reading this book. I wasn't disappointed as I loved it.
This is Josh and Meas story. Will Josh be able to break down Meas walls? You need to 1-click to find out. These main characters were brilliant. I also loved the secondary characters.

Hanging Pawns in the second book in the Fate series by Emerysn Vallis and it is actually a prequel to Adjournment and will help answer many of the questions that you may have had after reading the first book. However it will also raise several new questions, there are so many secrets floating around these families that it makes my head spin! There are some major revelations in this novel, the kind that make you go "What? Seriously? Holy crap!" Emersyn has an amazing talent of hinting at deep dark secrets while still keeping the story flowing smoothly and the reader completely engrossed. There is something very shady going on and while we still don't know exactly what happened we are getting more clues and this series is keeping me on the edge of my seat because I know something huge and crazy is coming! While this is a romance series but it also has mystery and intrigue which I love!
Hanging Pawns gives us the back story of Mea and Josh who were in the first novel but not major characters, however when they went to school they lived with Morgan, Molly and the triplets so their lives are very entwined. We get to find out how things were right after Sidney left and it was heart breaking. Her sisters were so sad and struggling without her even though they knew it was the right thing for her. I also fell even more in love with Simon in this book, his heartbreak was gut wrenching, being away from Sidney was terrible for him but he was trying to do what was best for her. Everyone was suffering while trying to protect Sydney which makes me wonder why exactly they pushed her away? I want to know why this is all happening and I can't wait to find out.
Josh meets Mea on her first day and ends up helping her out and introducing her to the twins. Mea had a rough life which she had to escape from and somehow she ended up embedded in the crazy lives of the Chandlers and the McAllisters which turned out to be a huge blessing. Morgan and Molly and their crazy ways really helped Mea come out of her shell and find herself. I adore Mea, she did something incredibly brave by walking away from a life she didn't want and set out to find herself and her own way in the world. She was sweet, sassy and adorable in her interactions with Josh.
I don't think there are enough words in the world for how I feel about Josh, he is pure perfection. Everything he says and does is so sweet, he has a way of anticipating everything Mea wants or needs and doing exactly the right thing. He never pushes her to talk even though he knows she is keeping secrets, he waits patiently for her to open up. He is so attentive to her and so obviously in love with her. I can't say too much because I don't want to spoil this sweet, heart melting story but let me tell you that his declaration of love had me bawling!! These two are just so freaking perfect I can't even take it!
Emerysn Vallis has an incredible writing style, the story comes out smoothly and flawlessly with perfect attention to detail. Her characters are amazing as well, the interactions between all of them are hilarious and the banter is perfect. I am obsessed with these two crazy families and finding out their deep dark secrets! I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Oh, Emersyn... You make my little reader heart so very happy!! After reading Adjournment, I paced the floors waiting for the second book in the Fate Series, Hanging Pawns, to be released. I do believe I even begged for you to hurry up. LOL. Well, they say good things come to those who wait and they weren't lying.
Hanging Pawns is a prequel style book and it gives the readers a lot of insight on what happens between Simon breaking Sydney's heart and her returning to her family. There are so many questions answered but Emersyn eludes to a HUGE secret that they are all still keeping. This book is also centered on Mea and Josh, who we met in the first book but weren't major players. When I realized this book wasn't really based on Syd and Simon, well, I can't lie, I was sort of sad. With that being said, by the end of the book I was not only emotionally attached to both Mea and Josh but I loved them just as much as Syd and Simon.
So... This book is heartbreaking. It still has that Emersyn-esq feel and is filled with the smart-mouthed characters that she writes so well but Mea's story is really a sad one. After leaving her life behind to start over she finds that sometimes just changing the scenery isn't enough to make the hurt go away. Thankfully, she is welcomed by Josh, the Chandler twins and the McAllister brothers and who better to help keep your mind off the sadness? I mean, really, those two families have enough crazy to start their own reality show. I really loved how Josh was in tune with Mea right from the start. And when the secrets of her past started to reveal themselves he didn't judge her but kept right on loving her.
As far as Emersyn Vallis goes well, I said it from the very beginning, this chick is pure talent. To think this is only her second book is mind blowing. Her ability to develop strong characters and deliver amazing plot twists is second to none. I can not wait to see where she is headed with this series and I can not wait for the return of Sydney, especially knowing what I know now. By the way, once you realize what is actually happening in this story, you will be blown away, I promise. I am dying to see how this all plays out!!
Keep it up Emersyn... It won't be long before we see NY Times Best Selling Author on the cover of your books!!

Hanging Pawns in the second book in the Fate series by Emerysn Vallis and it is actually a prequel to Adjournment and will help answer many of the questions that you may have had after reading the first book. However it will also raise several new questions, there are so many secrets floating around these families that it makes my head spin! There are some major revelations in this novel, the kind that make you go "What? Seriously? Holy crap!" Emersyn has an amazing talent of hinting at deep dark secrets while still keeping the story flowing smoothly and the reader completely engrossed. There is something very shady going on and while we still don't know exactly what happened we are getting more clues and this series is keeping me on the edge of my seat because I know something huge and crazy is coming! While this is a romance series but it also has mystery and intrigue which I love!
Hanging Pawns gives us the back story of Mea and Josh who were in the first novel but not major characters, however when they went to school they lived with Morgan, Molly and the triplets so their lives are very entwined. We get to find out how things were right after Sidney left and it was heart breaking. Her sisters were so sad and struggling without her even though they knew it was the right thing for her. I also fell even more in love with Simon in this book, his heartbreak was gut wrenching, being away from Sidney was terrible for him but he was trying to do what was best for her. Everyone was suffering while trying to protect Sydney which makes me wonder why exactly they pushed her away? I want to know why this is all happening and I can't wait to find out.
Josh meets Mea on her first day and ends up helping her out and introducing her to the twins. Mea had a rough life which she had to escape from and somehow she ended up embedded in the crazy lives of the Chandlers and the McAllisters which turned out to be a huge blessing. Morgan and Molly and their crazy ways really helped Mea come out of her shell and find herself. I adore Mea, she did something incredibly brave by walking away from a life she didn't want and set out to find herself and her own way in the world. She was sweet, sassy and adorable in her interactions with Josh.
I don't think there are enough words in the world for how I feel about Josh, he is pure perfection. Everything he says and does is so sweet, he has a way of anticipating everything Mea wants or needs and doing exactly the right thing. He never pushes her to talk even though he knows she is keeping secrets, he waits patiently for her to open up. He is so attentive to her and so obviously in love with her. I can't say too much because I don't want to spoil this sweet, heart melting story but let me tell you that his declaration of love had me bawling!! These two are just so freaking perfect I can't even take it!
Emerysn Vallis has an incredible writing style, the story comes out smoothly and flawlessly with perfect attention to detail. Her characters are amazing as well, the interactions between all of them are hilarious and the banter is perfect. I am obsessed with these two crazy families and finding out their deep dark secrets! I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Oh, Emersyn... You make my little reader heart so very happy!! After reading Adjournment, I paced the floors waiting for the second book in the Fate Series, Hanging Pawns, to be released. I do believe I even begged for you to hurry up. LOL. Well, they say good things come to those who wait and they weren't lying.
Hanging Pawns is a prequel style book and it gives the readers a lot of insight on what happens between Simon breaking Sydney's heart and her returning to her family. There are so many questions answered but Emersyn eludes to a HUGE secret that they are all still keeping. This book is also centered on Mea and Josh, who we met in the first book but weren't major players. When I realized this book wasn't really based on Syd and Simon, well, I can't lie, I was sort of sad. With that being said, by the end of the book I was not only emotionally attached to both Mea and Josh but I loved them just as much as Syd and Simon.
So... This book is heartbreaking. It still has that Emersyn-esq feel and is filled with the smart-mouthed characters that she writes so well but Mea's story is really a sad one. After leaving her life behind to start over she finds that sometimes just changing the scenery isn't enough to make the hurt go away. Thankfully, she is welcomed by Josh, the Chandler twins and the McAllister brothers and who better to help keep your mind off the sadness? I mean, really, those two families have enough crazy to start their own reality show. I really loved how Josh was in tune with Mea right from the start. And when the secrets of her past started to reveal themselves he didn't judge her but kept right on loving her.
As far as Emersyn Vallis goes well, I said it from the very beginning, this chick is pure talent. To think this is only her second book is mind blowing. Her ability to develop strong characters and deliver amazing plot twists is second to none. I can not wait to see where she is headed with this series and I can not wait for the return of Sydney, especially knowing what I know now. By the way, once you realize what is actually happening in this story, you will be blown away, I promise. I am dying to see how this all plays out!!
Keep it up Emersyn... It won't be long before we see NY Times Best Selling Author on the cover of your books!!

4 1/2 star review....
As soon as Adjournment ended I was more than ready for the next book. So when I found out book #2 was releasing soon I was beyond excited (that cliffhanger in book #1 about killed me), but for me Hanging Pawns is more like book #0.5. More like a prequel, but also enlightens you on certain events in Adjournment. Don't get me wrong I LOVED every word, and Mea & Josh's relationship is beautiful. I was just very surprised in the best way.
"I guess I love my mother because she is my mother, but other than that, I hate the bitch."
Mea left everything she has ever known and is starting over. On the outside she is this confident, independent woman, but on the inside she is hurting and alone. She has no one. Leaving her estranged family behind, she has decided to move forward and go to college. But a chance encounter with Josh while in line at school, changes her plans and starts a journey she never saw coming.
"I came to this school because it's quiet and low key, I came here to stay out of people's way and not get noticed, but now I seem to be in the middle of everything."
After that chance encounter, she finds herself being roommates with Molly and Morgan (Sidney's sisters - from book #1). And they just happen to live in a house that is connected to the house that Josh lives in with the McAllister triplets (Simon, Chase, & Dean). Mea finds herself pulled into this crazy world between all of these friends and you can't help but laugh at the craziness that goes on between this group. They are hilarious. Mea and Josh seem to be the voice of reason in the houses, but Molly and Morgan's craziness also helps to pull Mea out of her shell. But Josh is the real stand out in her life.
"You stupid man… why couldn't you just leave me alone? Why couldn't you just see I'm not worth it? Why did you have to make me want to let you in? I sob against my legs.
His hand touches that spot on my back, calming me.
"Because when I looked at you, I saw my entire world and it was as though someone turned on a light switch. I just wanted to be the one to turn yours on."
Josh slowly breaks down Mea's walls building a strong friendship and slowly that leads to a romantic side. He can read Mea so well, it is what you can't help but consider a soul-mate connection. They are beautiful together and complete each other in the best way. Can they find the HEA they deserve? Or will Mea's past keep her from opening up and ruin everything she's ever dreamed of?
"Time is precious; make sure you always keep track of it…"
You will be laughing the whole time and along the way you will watch 2 people fall in love. Their relationship is beautiful and made me want to immediately go reread Adjournment, just to see what I missed the first time. Of course I continue to love the relationships of "love and hate" between the Chandlers and McAllisters, maybe even more if that is possible! I love Emersyn's writing and can't wait for the next book in this series so I can get some answers ASAP!

Books written in first person are a hit-or-miss thing for me. There are a few authors that have forced me to overcome my first-person phobia (yes, that’s a thing). Emersyn Vallis is one of them. Where some authors “talk AT you”, Emersyn Vallis “talks TO you.” She pulls you in and allows you to become a part of the story as if you are living it right alongside the characters.
Hanging Pawns, the second book in the series, is Mea and Josh’s story. It tells how they met and fell in love. How Mea knows Molly, Morgan and the triplets. How Mea fits into the long chain of events that led to the rift between Sidney and Simon. Mea is a sweetheart, with a beautiful, independent spirit and strength. Josh is a complete woobie, with a great sense of humor, a big heart, and a slight germaphobia, adores Mea at first sight. It’s a sweet love story full of laughs, tiffs, mystery, and an HEA/more to come in Book 3.
The entire series is centered around Sidney Chandler (a snarky, sarcastic, panic attack prone, make-up artist with a serious peanut butter cup addiction), Simon McAllister (one third of the McAllister triplets, Sidney’s sexy arrogant ex, who still holds her heart), and a long history of events that tore them apart.
Sidney is completely lovable, full of angst and a hair trigger temper she tries desperately to control. Simon is one of those characters you’re not sure how to read. He’s an enigma, but you can’t help but hate love him so hard.
It doesn’t end with them. Every single secondary character, plays an integral part in the history that was once S&S. There’s Sidney’s older sisters – twins Morgan and Molly (both of whom have a penchant for violence, dirty Shirley Temples, and may or may not need medication). Lexi, Sidney’s business partner, best friend and roommate (an avid reader and alien conspiracy theorist, who doesn’t hear half the innuendo that comes out of her mouth). Simon’s womb mates Chase (the know it all) and Dean (the “weak” one)–both are just as hot and intriguing as Simon. Sidney’s mother- aka Madness (who has a Bailey’s addiction), the triplet’s mother Judith aka Pain in the A**, Sidney’s Grams (who has no filter and I really want to be just like her when I grow up), their friends Josh, Brett, Jacob, and Mea… and a few surprise characters along the way. I won’t spoil it.
Full of suspense, snarky humor, intrigue, intelligence, complex characters and plot line–The Fated Series is a roller coaster ride to the very end. With plenty of sexy times, secondary relationships, laughs, tears, and surprises along the way to make it a ride you don’t want to miss.
Embrace the Cups and Fear the Madness–do yourself a favor read this series! Well done Emersyn Vallis I really hated to see it end. I highly recommend the entire series and will read it again.

Well, unlike the first book in the series, this book did not end in a cliffhanger. However, I was quite confused by this book. I had assumed, given said cliffhanger, that this book would be a continuation of Simon and Sidney's story. I was wrong. This book is about a completely different couple--Mea and Josh.
I want to say, I did enjoy Mea and Josh's story. It was sweet. Especially Josh. He was adorable. But I was completely thrown off in the beginning, not knowing who I was reading about and confused as to when and where this was taking place. I don't like to begin a book with that much confusion; it makes it hard to get into, particularly if you are expecting something different and the blurb doesn't give you any indication that it isn't what you might have been expecting. In fact, the blurb basically tells you nothing. This is the main reason for my 3 rather than 4 stars. Also, the editing could use some work.
Another thing I ran across in this book that was one of my complaints with the first book was the loose ends. Mea is a sweet girl, running from an unhappy past. We know her mother was verbally abusive and controlling, but it's never said whether she was physically abusive. Is that why she tells her to go to her father's office when she's angry with her? We don't know. Also, my adorable Josh--Who is his mother? Why does he seem intent on keeping that to himself? And why is it never revealed? Or even brought up again? It doesn't fit their trusting, honest love story.
You do get to experience more of the twins and the McAlister boys in this book. It's from their college years (since this story happens in the past), but it gives the reader some more insight (if very vague in some instances) into who they are and the roles they may or may not be playing in the whole Simon-Sidney ordeal.
At the end of this book, I'm left wondering: Is the next book going to be about Simon and Sidney or someone else, like one of the twins maybe? Do Mea and Josh play a role in the future of Simon and Sidney, or did we get their story simply because it was sweet, they were mentioned in the first book, and their story gave us some twins/triplets background? Were Simon and Sidney even the main focus of this series, as I thought based on the way the first book ended, or is the series a bunch of stories about how all of them find HEA love? I just don't know.
That's how I felt throughout this entire book: I just don't know.
I do plan to read the other 2 books in the series. Hopefully, my questions will be answered and I'll feel a sense of closure by the end. Hopefully...

Ok, so, I am totally in love with this author (in a strictly platonic, not creepy way). As an author myself, I can only hope to be half the writer she is. No, I wasn’t paid to say this. I do not accept monetary gifts for my reviews. Or gifts period for that matter. Anyway, I absolutely loved the second book in this series! I loved the fact that she went into the story of Josh and Mea because in the first book I was totally confused on exactly how they met/what their story was. I have my answer! I love Mea just as much as I love Sidney and her sisters! The characterization that Emersyn uses is Phe-freaking-nominal! I can totally see how Simon has this thing about him that makes people love him. His charm. Even though he’s a dick. How do guys do that? Back to the story at hand. I love the complexity around Mea and how she overcame the world of crap that she was in. It was a beautiful, but sad story. I honestly cried when her dad found her living with Morgan and Molly. What he said to her was devastating. I have no idea how she got over that. I am sure it would not have been so easy without Josh. I thought shit was about to hit the fan when Madness let on that she knew who Mea really was. I never seen that coming. This series is just full of flipping surprises! Which is a good thing. I can’t say how much I love it enough! I feel like I have known these characters forever. I feel like they’re my friends. I would love to have friends like these people! Well, I do view Chase and Dean as sideline nerds, but that’s because the picture of Simon in my head is insanely hot. I think they also converted Josh to their ways. I love the confidence that all of these men exude! This is something you do not see in men today. It’s something I wish would come back! There is nothing sexier than a confident and outgoing man! I am kind of scared to keep reading. I am already into book 3, and I know that there’s only one more! I don’t want it to end! Must have more! So yeah, if you love lightly erotic, down to earth (sort of) romance, with just the right amount of sarcastic comedy, then this is definitely a must read! You will not be sorry! I know you will love it as much as I do and I am a PNR girl! Hands down. Best non-paranormal romance I have read.

Mea and Josh are an unlikely couple from the start. She wants no ties and prefers to hide in the shadows, while Josh has a bigger than life persona. From the moment Josh meets Mea he can’t help but want to bring her out of her shell to show her the light and fun side of life.
My Review: 5 Stars
This is the second book in the Fated series and I absolutely loved it I breezed through reading it in a day. Adjournment took me a few days much longer and a lot going on. This story flow really well and goes back in time to introduce us the Mea and Josh and how they become a couple and part of the motley crew from friends from the previous book.
Mea’s home life was anything but ideal, coming from wealth you would think she had it all. But its quite the opposite. Mea’s family is cold, her mother uncaring and her father too weak to stop her from making Mea’s life miserable. Her sisters are cruel and shun her at every turn.
Josh brings a whole new world into Mea’s life, he makes her realize that life can be fun. She doesn’t have to be alone. His sweetness and love for Mea drew me in from the moment he skipped in line in front of her at the college in an effort to get her to talk to him.
We also get the McAllister triplets and their pranks against the not so innocent Morgan and Molly Chandler twins. I was also interested in poor Simon nursing his broken heart after leaving his one true love Sidney behind. Morgan and Molly and the guys take Mea into their fold of friends and chaos without question. I loved the fun they all seem to have.
The story is not without heartbreak when Mea is confronted by the harshness of her family’s rejection. But Josh and her new found family of Morgan, Molly and the triplets help to get her through the devastation.
This was truly my favorite of the series so far, it answers some of my questions from the first book that had left me a little confused. Gain this author doesn’t write as much sexual heat in her books as I usually like but this series doesn’t need it. The heat that is there is well written. I look forward to seeing how these guys and gals end up.

The story is not without heartbreak when Mea is confronted by the harshness of her family’s rejection. But Josh and her new found family of Morgan, Molly and the triplets help to get her through the devastation.
This was truly my favorite of the series so far, it answers some of my questions from the first book that had left me a little confused. Gain this author doesn’t write as much sexual heat in her books as I usually like but this series doesn’t need it. The heat that is there is well written. I look forward to seeing how these guys and gals end up.

Wow. What a book!
I liked Mea and Josh in Adjournment but seeing Mea's story and how they came to be where they were in Adjournment was great! I loved the story and I made me love these characters even more. I wasn't a Simon fan in Adjournment to begin with because of how he treated Sidney but after reading Hanging Pawns I now loved Simon and realise he was pinning for Sidney all along. That being said this wasn't Simons story but Josh and Mea.
Mea has a horrid family, her mother wanted her to be something she isn't, her Father never stood up for her and he sister well they are just as bad as her Mother. Even thought she got handed a crappy card when it came to handing out parents that doesn't stop them being her parents. She will never have a family that she wants but with time maybe someone will accept her and learn to love her like she deserves.
Queue Josh. Josh is a sweetheart, right from the first time he saw her he had his sights set on her. Josh will do whatever it takes to have Mea in his arms, his heart and in his life forever!
The story of Mea and Josh was a touching one. It broke my heart, stomped on it and then put it in a blender. For such a short story I felt so many emotions. I could feel the hurt and regret Mea felt for not having doing what her mum had asked, yet I also felt how relieved she was to be away from her mother and amidst a family that excepted her for how she was.
Mea has some secrets she thought she had buried well enough so that nobody would know but there are some sharp eyes about and people work out Mea's secret and it is not taken like she thought it would be. Mea thinks to little of herself, she doesn't see herself how others see her, she can't see past what her Mother has made her believe she is. She is more worthy than she knows.
Emersyn has done it again. I liked Adjournment but I loved Hanging Pawns and I for one can not wait for book three in the Fate series. Emersyn is fastly becomming my favourite indie author.

Hanging Pawns by Emersyn Vallis is the second book in the Fate series and it is from an entirely different point of view to Adjournment. Its focus is on new characters, Mea and Josh who happens to be a friend of the the McAllister triplets and the Chandler twins who live next door whilst they are in college in California. Mea has left her miserable family life behind, (she has the mother from hell) to make a fresh start and meets Josh while queuing to enrol. She's missed out on a dorm room and needs somewhere to live; it just so happens that there is space with Molly and Morgan Chandler, so problem solved.
The tone of Hanging Pawns is more positive than the the first book despite the mystery surrounding Mea and the time she spends with Josh is pure romance. Josh is head-over-heels in love with Mea - “I have loved you since I tricked you into letting me ahead of you in line, and I will love you until I can trick you into letting me die first, because I don’t want to live a second without you.”

Of course, since all the four volumes are available for me to read consecutively, I'm not overly concerned with unanswered questions while earlier readers had to wait some months between books. The chess references in the books have piqued my imagination and I am wondering why they exist and where they will lead.

This is Josh's and Mae's story and it is quick and is just a good romance story. I read this in about an hour and I truly loved it. I love Morgan and Molly, Chase, Dean, and Simon. They .make this story enjoyable and you have a lot of laughs in this book. I love seeing the fun side of romance and the little arguments that really aren't arguments. It always puts a smile on my face. You also have the drama here and there and some of the things didn't feel completed in this story, even with Josh and Mae. That's where I felt a little left down on. But in all I loved how there were secrets, but really there weren't, I enjoyed the romance between Josh and Mae. Always liked the love at first site thing, but with that it still seemed a little off, so I'm thinking there might be more coming for all of them in the next books.
Mae, she broke away from her family. I think she is very strong and that she needed to. She needed to find herself, and I think she did in this book. She became this beautiful, independent woman that she could be proud of. Being timid at first drew me into her character, but when she became stronger in the story she was even more of the woman I knew she would end up being. Josh was this perfect gentleman from the beginning. He gave Mae everything she needed to grow and didn't push himself on her too quickly. He treated her like a princess and that what he got in the end. I loved everything about this couple and how they didn't just jump into something they both weren't ready for.
This series so far has been really good. I love all the characters. I also love this author. I like how she stages the chapters, with a quote first. It makes you see the chapter so much clearer and for that when I'm reading it I look for what it links up with in the chapter. Its a great way to encourage the reader to see things they may have missed in the story without knowing. I cant wait to read the next book in this series, it could only get better.

I love Mea and Josh!
With all family ties broken, Mea Andrews left her life behind with the rusty car she loves and the handful of clothes and possessions she was able to carry. The first official day of her new life was a bit rocky as she started college and immediately found herself without dorm housing as she had initially planned. As fate would have it, Mea meets Josh Anderson in the sign up line. Immediately, sparks fly as Josh seems to easily look behind her less-than-collegiate appearance and see her for who she really is. Little did she know that this chance encounter would bring richness to her life she could not imagine – love, friendship and family.
This is the second book in the Fate series and I loved it! This reads more like a prequel as events occur before book one’s timeline. If you have read the first book the characters in this installment will not be new though the focus is now on Josh and Mea. The background and history provided bring even more dimension and depth to the entire cast but especially Mea, Josh, Simon, Morgan and Molly. I honestly wished I’d read this story first as the “a ha” moments were many and filled in many blanks from Adjournment. The writing was as fluid and easy as the first novel, however, I found myself enjoying it even more. The interaction between all the characters was again filled with laughter and sarcasm but I always felt the love and kindness that percolated underneath. This story did not have a cliff-hanger and could be read as a stand-alone but, fair warning. The characters will worm their way into your hearts and you will definitely want to read more!

I am adoring this Fate series by Emersyn Vallis, this another great story that has a lot to do with book 1, Adjournment, but thus is Mea Andrews and Josh Anderson's story.
We were given a glimpse of them towards the end of Adjournment, but this tells the how thry met story.
Mea has run awsy from her evil overbearing mother to attend college, while putting in her oapers she meets Josh Anderson, he is gorgeous, hot and under the glaze of every female at university. Mea doesn't want anything to do with Josh, he us just another one of the beautiful people that tend to be mean, just like the girls behind her at registration.
Under the watchful eye of Josh, Mea is quickly taken by his friendship with no strings, and his holy hotness doesn't do bad things either.... Soon enough she is out if the dorms and living next to Josh and the McAlister triplets Simon, Chase and Dean and in the same house as the Chandler twins, Morgan and Molly. The girls take to Mea straight away and soon she becomes family enjoying Christmas with their family.
Not understanding the carry on and the Chandler family banter she leans on Josh more and more.... But when Mrs Chandler finds out Mea is not who she says she is will she still be welcome and will Josh still want her?
I really enjoyed Hanging Pawns more than Adjournment I think, even though it was a quick read it gave some more details into the messed up life that Sydney Chandler and what Josh and Mea's roles are.
Very much looking forward to book 3 in what is becoming a great series.

Hanging Pawns is book #2 in The Fate Series where you meet Josh and Mae again on a more personal level. I loved getting to know there backstory and how they were brought together!!! They are absolutely perfect for each other. Josh is the guy every girl wishes was her boyfriend- sweet, caring, a flirt, handsome, not egotistical, funny and patient of all things.
Mae, who made a huge life change and was looking to just be herself free from her controlling family runs into Josh who is the complete opposite of Mae. A chance meeting between the two ensues a back and forth dance of flirtation from Josh and in turn stubbornness from Mae. Ultimately a friendship forms between the two and ultimately turns to more years later.
My favorite quote from Hanging Pawns is when Mae and Josh were having a heart to heart conversation bearing their secrets....Mae said "But cars… like people, need love… they need to be taken care of or they rust.” My gaze drops to the floor. “My car… like me, is lifeless on the outside—we’re rusted, looked over, and forgotten about.” My voice trembles as it becomes softer. “But if we’re given a chance to open up to the right person, you’ll see that’s where our beauty lies. The outside of a car, just like people, is only cosmetic…it's the interior that matters." I think this holds so much truth and Mae was afraid to show everyone her true self because self consciously she was afraid of being judged negatively. This holds so much truth to real life and I was able to relate to it.
I enjoyed reading Hanging Pawns and can't wait to read the next book in the Fate Series!

If you haven't read Adjournment by Emersyn Vallis, I highly suggest doing so! Mea and Josh are background characters throughout Adjournment, and I love that Emersyn has introduced Mea and Josh in their own book.
I love books that have to do with Fate, and just having that feeling that that's where you belong. For Mea it's walking away from a life of security that lands her where she ends up; a broke college girl that is doing her best to make ends meet, and to piece her life back together on her own.
Nobody knows her past life, and she would rather it stay that way. With clothes in trash bags, a ratty beat up rusty old car, and not much else to look forward to, Mea kicks off her new life meeting Josh, who in turn introduces her to Molly, and Morgan; twins who invite Mea into their lives with open arms.
"Everyone has a story to tell, they just need to find the right person to tell it to," he says impassively.
Mea is finding herself; independent comes to mind when I was reading through Hanging Pawns. When she meets Josh, the heart throb that lives next door to her, her walls start to break down. Josh has no idea that Mea is running from her past; he just knows that there is something there that she doesn't want to discuss, and he wants her to come to him when she's ready to talk.
I absolutely loved Hanging Pawns. I feel like Hanging Pawns answered a lot of questions that arose in Adjournment. I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoyed Adjournment, and if you haven't read Adjournment, suggest that you one-click both books today!

If you have already read ‘Adjournment’ you are in for a treat with ‘Hanging Pawns’ as many of the questions in your mind at the end of the first book are answered in this tale.
Told in a way such that many will do as I did and finish it in one sitting it tells the story of two of the minor characters in ‘Adjournment’, Mea and Josh. This can be read as a ‘stand alone’ and if you read it before Adjournment you will enjoy the first book even more than you will reading them in their published order.
I loved the Mea character, as I’m sure you will and I cannot imagine a more loyal or supportive boyfriend for anyone than Josh. Their meeting and the events in the story are a prequel to ‘Adjournment’ and only towards the end do you meet Simon and Sidney - - just in time to want to learns more of their story and more about the families who seem to be intent on destroying their offspring one way or another, either by shunning them, cutting them off from their family and friends or spoiling them. Assuming you are not, it will make you glad you are not rich enough to own a large house in the Hamptons. Watch out for ‘Sacrifice’ coming soon and in which you can learn more of Simon, Sidney and the others.

This is a very sweet novella about Mea, who we meet in Fate #1, 'Adjournment.' She is seeking her independence and trying to overcome her past, and then she meets the sweet, charming, and quick witted Josh at college. Honestly, I just totally fell in love with the two of them and their story, and this series has certainly grabbed my intrigue!
Mea’s character was a very down to earth and easy to relate to, and her search for freedom from her past and quest for independence was very endearing. Josh and his unassuming character were just so adorable! I admired how he was so patient and understanding in dealing with Mea and her unusual reactions and behaviors. Although they tried to stay focused on only being friends, Josh’s charm and easy way with her made everything just happen so naturally between them. They were so fun, and their definite chemistry, wit, and humor made it only inevitable for their relationship to escalate and grow into a great passion together.
There was a nice and steady flow to this story, and the foreshadowing certainly pulled me into this series even more. I really enjoyed getting to know more about the other characters in this series and seeing how their relationships are intertwined. Of course, I also enjoyed finding more pieces of this exciting mystery. Looking forward to the next book in the Fate Series, ‘Sacrifice’ and what is next in store!

This was a good book, but slightly confusing and hard to get into at the beginning, but I think part of that is it’s been quite a while since I read the first book. The further you read the more the characters developed and were revealed. This made the book flow much smoother and was a much easier read. This book had more somber emotions, especially where Mea was concerned.
Those times, dealing with Mea’s flashbacks to her family or the things her mom would tell her, were especially heartbreaking. Those times in the book made me want to jump into the story and try to get her mother to wise up. Those moments were frustrating to say the least! The author did a great job getting those emotions and feelings to really shine through on this story.
We didn’t get to know Josh much in the story. He lives with the triplets and has a family but we don’t know much about his family. It would have been nice to dive a little bit more into his past life.
Overall, a good read, not as much depth as the first one, but a good read and answers questions that arise during the first book regarding Mea and Josh. Pick up book one before you read this one, things will definitely make more sense.

This story just keeps getting better!
I received this book as an ARC.
This story picks up where Adjournment leaves off, sort of. Mea is a shy girl but get into her personal space and she will tell you about it! Josh just can’t leave her alone. Mea meets Sidney’s twin sisters, Morgan and Molly along with Simon and his identical triplet brothers Chase and Dean as well as Sidney’s former bff and mean girl. This story gets you into the meat of these families and their approach of living in high society while trying to be normal, if that is possible giving there are twins and triplets!! Mea lives an unhappy life. She has navigated through a childhood filled with so many questions surrounding her feelings of abandonment, loss, sadness and wishing she knew how to fix it all. She is dealing with trying to be independent, go to college and live under the radar. I love how Josh and his tenacity and accepts her at face value but knows still waters run very deep. He just doesn’t know how deep yet! Mea marvels in the simple things that living on a college campus gives her. The innocent pleasure of running in the rain leaves her breathless where others look at that as an unpleasant experience. This story takes you on a journey of with Mea’s new found friendships and making a life for herself.
