Although very dated (written in the mid-80’s), this book is a fascinating accounting of China as a land and a people. The poverty that such a large portion of the people lived in shocked me and the harshness of parts of the land was also very surprising. Gives a good synopsis of the political changes and touches on art work development over the past several centuries.
Both facts and personal stories combined in one book, gives a pretty good overview of a China anno 1984. Starting from knowing close to nothing about Chinese culture, history, religion and political system, this was a great intro (accompanied with pretty decent pictures).
