The sequel to A WEDDING IN CORNWALL, this festive, feel-good holiday novella is scheduled to be released October 18, 2016. It is currently available as a pre-order.
It's Julianne Morgen's first Christmas in the Cornish village of Ceffylgwyn, and life seems perfect. Her job as an event planner couldn't be better, she's beginning to feel at home despite being an American in a tiny English village, and her relationship with handsome English horticulturist Matthew Rose continues to slowly blossom from friendship to love.
But when an old flame of Julianne's appears on the spot, she finds herself tangled up in her own past. A grand charitable ball planned at Cliffs House for Christmas brings its own challenges to Julianne's world, along with a last-minute wedding in London. And when she learns that Matthew's former career in America has invited him back, she worries about what it means for their future together if he says 'yes.'
Laura Briggs is the bestselling author of multiple lighthearted romance books, including the Amazon UK Top 100's LATE TO THE WEDDING and the popular A WEDDING IN CORNWALL series. Since her debut with Pelican Book Group's inspirational novella ONLY IN NOVELS, she has worked both with publishers and as an independent author, as well as partnering with others writers, including working under a pen name in other genres. She loves vintage fashion, classic movies, British melodrama, and spending time with her pets.
Another cute entry in the series featuring American event planner Julianne now settled in Cornwall as an event planner for a large estate. This is definitely a novella rather than a book (at 109 pages), and the budding romance between Julianne and Matt is being dragged out, with a number of obstacles put in their way. After having Matt's ex- appear in the first entry, I really didn't need Julianne's ex- in this book.
As I really enjoyed Book 1 in this Series, I was pleased to read the next installment. I was not disappointed in the return to Cornwall and the characters there .. A lovely Christmas romance .. I will be looking out for more in this Series ..
2nd installment: a nice follow on from book 1. I just wish that Julianne had a bit more oomph, so that she would get what she wanted. Enjoyable read though. 3☆
I was browsing Amazon and spotted this festive cover, and that it was only 99 pence, read the blurb and decided to give this new-to-me author a read - Straight away I felt like I was missing something, like I'd come in part way through a story and had missed the excitement of the hero and heroine having met and sparks flying. I read on for another potential hero to be introduced, which threw me off balance again wondering if he was the one she was meant to be with and not the original guy. It wasn't until I finished this novella, then came to review it on Goodreads, that I saw a disclaimer that this was actually a sequel - this wasn't stated anywhere on the Amazon UK book description, it's not mentioned on the book cover, and neither is it made clear in the preface, so I'm feeling a bit peeved about that - if the disclaimer is on Goodreads, surely it should be on Amazon, or any other platform it's for sale on! If I love a cover and a blurb, I don't read reviews (which having now done I can see it's a follow up) so it's the authors responsibility to make this clear, and I hope that she updates her book description with the disclaimer at a minimum, and links them as part of a series so no one else is caught out by this. Too much hard work goes into writing a book for a simple error of omission to risk losing star ratings for errors like this.
The writing was actually very good, I enjoyed the plot, I could picture the scenes perfectly thanks to some great descriptives, and there was a nice build up to the finale, but I was still missing that visceral connection to the leads - which I probably would have had if I'd had the chance to read the book in which they met and saw the relationship blossom. That makes this novella really hard to rate, on one hand it's unfair to penalise an author when I've missed half of the story, on the other hand that wasn't my fault. As I can't predict how I would have felt if I'd read the books in sequence, as intended, then I have to rate it based on my reaction to it as it stands - so despite enjoying many aspects of it, for the sense of discontent I can only give it a 3.5 stars.
I really enjoyed A Wedding In Cornwall and so looked forward to catching up with Julianne, Matt and all the staff at Cliffs house in this second instalment of Laura’s series.
Julianne has settled into her life in Cornwall and her fledgling relationship with Matt is going well. However, the course of true love does not always run smoothly and it appears that fate may be conspiring against the couple.
A Christmas In Cornwall is very much a classic love story with an added gorgeous setting and a sprinkling of Christmas sparkle. The characters are great and you can’t help but like Julianne, Matt and the rest of the staff at Cliffs House. I got completely absorbed in Julianne’s life and it felt like spending time with an old friend. Unsure of the status of their fledgling relationship, I found myself rooting for Julianne and Matt and hoping their relationship would work out.
Once again, Laura has done a great job of describing Cornwall and the village creating a really warm feel throughout the novella. It still amazes me that Laura has never actually been to Cornwall and she must have undertaken a lot of research.
A lovely festive read. Great if you want to while away a winter’s afternoon with a light-hearted read.
Thank you to Laura Briggs for my copy in exchange for my unbiased review.
In this sequel to “A Wedding in Cornwall” we return back to the beautiful landscape of the Cornish countryside to check back in on the blooming romance developing between Julianne and Matt and to find out what extravagant events “The Cliffs” will be hosting next.
The writing is well done. The delightful, intriguing characters we loved from the first novella are back, along with a few new ones. And the plot is a lovely mix of budding romance, scheming exes, monumental decisions, festive preparations, ritzy galas, and scrumptious food.
Overall this is a lighthearted, delightful, holiday read that is perfect for a wintry afternoon.
Thank you to Laura Briggs, the author, for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
A Christmas in Cornwall by Laura Briggs is a wonderful Christmas read. It is the second book in the 9 book series following on from book 1 in the series A Wedding in Cornwall and follows the protagonist event planner Julianne Morgen as she celebrates her first Christmas in the Cornish village of Ceffylgwyn after moving over from Seattle. The story follows her love story with English horticulturist Matthew Rose as they struggle to make the step from friendship to romance despite both being in love with each other. As the book progresses Julianne’s ex-boyfriend Dwight arrives in England to work in London. He contacts Julianne to help some people he knows Benjamin and Daphne to plan their wedding which Julianne does alongside her work for the grand charitable ball planned at Cliffs House for Christmas. Added into this Matthew has been offered his teaching job back – only snag it’s in Massachusetts leaving Matthew with a difficult decision and leaving time running out for them both to tell each other how they feel.
The plot unfolds gradually at a perfect speed. When you think no more twists in the plot will happen another one is just around the corner. There is also many Christmas references in the book which really set the scene and excellent backstory for each of the main characters giving you a real sense of their personalities. However a bit of a letdown for me was the main character. I liked her up to near the end of the story. However when she slapped Dwight across the face it was hard to like her. Yes, his intentions weren’t great but still, hitting him was extreme. She didn’t seem to feel any remorse after either and just went back to concentrating on her feelings for Matthew so while I liked the book I wasn’t as fond of the main character.
Matthew is my favourite character in the book. He comes across very likable and his feelings for Julianne are lovely. It’s probably not a good sign though that I would rather he went and found someone nicer. But my dislike of Julianne can’t and shouldn’t take away from the fact that this is a wonderfully written book otherwise. There is excellent attention to detail and it is beautifully crafted. A wonderful Christmas read.
Okay, so it is fiction and we have to allow some latitude but it irrationally annoyed me that the weather experienced in one of the, traditionally, warmer parts of the British Isles was so relentlessly wrong. Maybe by the time I read this book 10 days ago I was getting jaded at the White Christmas motif but maybe it is more to do with the fact that you are unlikely to get a White Christmas in Cornwall - a foggy Christmas definitely but not a white one. There also seemed to be real issues with the size of the town the hall is attached to as well, one minute quaint and rural and the next it felt like a moderately sized town which I found very distracting.
The only thing that saved this one for me was the descriptions of the events at the hall and all it's Christmas finery. It did prepare me well for the season and almost made me want to get that tree out and start decorating. Unfortunately it would them move from the magical setting to the rather pathetic "love triangle" engendered by Julianne's old flame popping up to muddy the waters between her and Matt. Couple this with her altruistic behaviour when Matt is offered a teaching post in the US and it all felt a little blah and written by numbers.
A quick read that is perfect for fitting in around your festivities but not one that made me want to indulge any further in this rather lengthy series.
My first from this author and I picked it up during my December search for Christmas-y reading and then didn't finish it in time because it didn't grab me. And I've finished it now and I think I missed out by not having read the previous book in this series, although it didn't seem like a prerequisite from the blurb. Probably won't be searching out any more in the series - it was fine for what it was although there felt like a bit too much plot for the length - but I suspect if you liked the first book in the series you'd probably like this too. I would say that it's not actually *that* Christmas-y - Christmas is the backdrop to what's going on, but there was nothing much that anchored this story that anchored it specifically to CHristmas (the Christmas Eve ball could've been a Summer ball, etc).
As it was coming to Christmas and this was free, I downloaded this book onto my Kindle. It was very nicely described in terms of the setting and sceneries. As this was not the first book, I did not get much insight into the characters of Gemma, Pippa and Dinah (staff worker at Cliffs House) or how the main character, Julianne, met her love interest, Matt. However, despite this, I was able to catch onto it after a few chapters. Maybe because of my lack of knowledge of the characters, I felt that Julianne was a little juvenile with telling Matt how she loved him. Her encounter with her ex-boyfriend seems a bit far fetch too, as Dwight is not exactly a ‘friend’ and Julianne owed him nothing. With the ending, I am intrigued to find out if this will be the end of Matt and Julianne or just the beginning.
A good read. Nice plot - two hurt people, becoming friends, the return of an ex and the the healing of the past. Good characters, normal and real without the plastic gushiness some romance writers go for. She has been run off her feet with all the events being planned for the holiday season. However the best thing is being close to Matt who had left his university position to take up the gardener's job here. Their friendship has grown but looks as if a spanner has been thrown into the works by the arrival of her ex. Then when he convinces her to help with the remains of what is needed to organise a wedding for a young student and intern. Throw in a job offer abroad, finding out that she has been used by her ex and Christmas.
I bought this book expecting a story about Christmas and got a very sloppy love story with Christmas as a weak backdrop. The story is written in the first person, which I always find very irritating. And the main character's constant wittering on about how she feels about Matt makes the whole thing even more annoying. The storyline is weak and far too contrived. There is no clear sense of timing and no chapters breaking up the 'action', making it quite hard to follow at times. All in all, this was a disappointing book and I won't be reading any more in the series.
Loved the characters in this book. Julienne had moved from America to Cornwall, working in a country house as their planner. She became friends with Mat the gardener, who introduced her to the joys of the village. Their friendship grows but misunderstandings puts it at risk as Juliennes ex boyfriend turns up at the manor.
A gentle read with lots of twists and turns, maki g it hard to put down. A lovely story.
Julianne and matt are destined to be together i hope that they can survive the test of being so far away from each other so early in their relationship. Mr Dwight was a horrible character to use such a loverly lady like Julianne to organise a wedding for free for furthering of his career. He was a nasty person and she was right to have got ride of him the 1st time he only cares about himself. I cant wait to read book 3 right away.
3 stars I guess. The story was fine just very predictable and boring. Perhaps I would have cared a little more about the characters if I had read the first book in the series. I have it but just have never had the desire to read it despite it being set in beautiful Cornwall. And I still don’t. I started with this book because it’s Christmas and figured if it was good I would go back and read book one. No need. This series just isn’t for me.

This author, drew my mind straight into the sense of becoming and joining in the fun at the big house over Christmas. It was good clean romance at its best. I look forward to hunting out more stories from this beautifully written author
What a fantastic story. It had qualities in it to bring the story alive. To be set in Cornwall was a super choice. I could visualise the brisk wintry scenes which made it come alive. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this. Read it at your leisure.
I enjoyed reading A Christmas in Cornwall. It was an interesting and fun read. The characters seem true to life and I didn’t want the story to end. I just bought book 3.
True love usually doesn’t always run smoothly and so it goes for Julanne Morgen’s and Matt Roses relationship. Julianne loves her job in Cornwall, but Matt has been offered a job in Boston.
Quite a good book actually - it was a nice feel-good romance plain and simple. Nothing too demanding or awful about it, just a simple story of boy meets girl and falls in love so that was nice.
