I'm still a fan of this series because I find it unique - I've never read another series quite like it in the sense that the main character is essentially kind of a litigator/prosecutor/executioner/judge (depending on the situation) for demons and much of the content actually revolves around real law school training. I have really liked Noon, the heroine, thus far. In fact, I liked most all of the characters and their interactions with each other. I never really felt like the villains g SPOILERS

I'm still a fan of this series because I find it unique - I've never read another series quite like it in the sense that the main character is essentially kind of a litigator/prosecutor/executioner/judge (depending on the situation) for demons and much of the content actually revolves around real law school training. I have really liked Noon, the heroine, thus far. In fact, I liked most all of the characters and their interactions with each other. I never really felt like the villains got too "villainey" or the heroes too one-dimensional. So yeah, I was pleased as punch when this one came out after such a long period of time had passed since book three.

(view spoiler)[ However, 75% in or so and something major happens. One of my favorite characters dies. Oh how I hate it when one of the favorites gets killed off. So much so, in fact, that I really couldn't believe it was actually true. And it might have broken my heart except for the fact that it was written really strangely. I found it so lacking in human emotion that I had trouble believing what I was reading. I felt no authentic grief from anyone except for his family (and that was very brief) and one very short crying jag by the Noon. I kept expecting him to pop up again, maybe having shifted into an alternate reality or something. Yet, it never happened. So now I have to decide whether to continue with the series or not. Because he was a large part of what made it interesting. Not sure that Noon can carry it on her own. And I certainly did not feel anything true in her grief. She went and did something pretty major in order to prevent herself from feeling the grief and as far as she knew it was a permanent thing. I kind of got annoyed with that. It was understandable to a certain extent but she didn't waste any time with it. I had trouble believing that she wouldn't have gotten caught up in that grief and held onto it, because that's all she had left of the one she lost. At that point for me, everything got kind of weird and very flat. I was still trying to figure out if I believed that he was really gone - based on the reactions of all the other characters. And since when did his father and brother not approve of her? I just re-read the entire series in anticipation of this installment and I did not get that feeling at all.

Anyway, let's just say the author has something else up her sleeve and he's not truly gone after all - in this case I'm annoyed because it was a dirty trick and a waste of the last 25% of the book. Now let's say he is truly gone, which really does seem to be the case here (ahh but one never knows) - then in that case I'm annoyed because of the pathetic and completely lacking in impact send-off that he received especially as he was important to the series as a whole. There are other minor annoyances that weren't really that big of a deal to me but changed somewhat after the tragedy. I was annoyed that the Angel who created Noon's wardrobe knew so much of everything else but couldn't prevent it from happening. I was annoyed that another character, who had some type of "sight" could not have prevented it from happening. I was annoyed at the hypocrisy within the St. Luck's staff regarding Noon's behavior and the outcome of her residency at Rockthorn Gorge. Suddenly they are bringing up the fact that during her "quest" last semester she had killed a fellow student, yet it seems that random students were killed during the sparring matches which were part of the elimination process for the quest's participants and at that time no one batted an eye. I was annoyed at what her punishment is going to be, because it seems like the whole Rockthorn Gorge dam project could have been avoided completely if someone had just thought to bring a case against the slum-lord who oversaw the people who needed the electricity it would provide.

My final thoughts are this: I will likely read the next installement. I am curious to see how Noon handles herself living in the slums and what types of ideas she has for improving the living conditions there. As to the tragedy: permanent or not, magical character return or not, I thought that whole section was written poorly and without emotion.

I desperately wanted this series to continue. At the end of White Heart of Justice, I felt a little bereft that the lives of these characters would stop there. Alas, the Gods of Fantasy must have heard my plea. Noon is back, and she's as amazing as ever.

Brilliantly narrated, this book is a magnificent fantasy novel because it has stamina in its pace, it's witty, it's romantic, and it's stimulating for the mind and conscience as well as the heart.

I can't help but love so many things about it. The I desperately wanted this series to continue. At the end of White Heart of Justice, I felt a little bereft that the lives of these characters would stop there. Alas, the Gods of Fantasy must have heard my plea. Noon is back, and she's as amazing as ever.

Brilliantly narrated, this book is a magnificent fantasy novel because it has stamina in its pace, it's witty, it's romantic, and it's stimulating for the mind and conscience as well as the heart.

I can't help but love so many things about it. The complex hierarchy of legal authorities and demon patrons, the apocalyptic historical background of the world-building, the latinized names of places, and people, the fiery magic, the clever use of humour, the mysterious and deadly plot, and the beautiful intricacy of the forbidden romance between Noon and the multi-faceted Ari.

One thing that is so great about Noon is that she is powerful, strong and intelligent, but she always sweats for her victories, and she suffers and evolves through each of them. This time, she's been posted to a remote area where she must conduct an investigation over the destruction of a controversial dam and find the culprit.

I just dived head first into this exciting mix of magic melees, cunning demons, angelic lore, quirky characters, exhilarating fights and rich legends.

I fell in love again with Noon and her impossible mission to battle deadly enemies lurking behind insidious plans and the price she always has to pay to stay true to who she is against law, magic and sacrifice.

Then, after the most perfectly passionate reunion which I was so hoping for, the author decided to destroy me without remorse. From a creative point of view, that terrible and mind-blowing plot twist is the source of an immensely imaginative and gripping sequence of events, laden with action and magic and which leads to a resolution of this fourth book that once again is fitting and opens up more exhilarating venues for a fifth book.

Yet...

It's gutted me open like an innocent puppy and now for the first time in my life I kind of hate the mind behind the book. Sorry. I could never accept that this kind of thing happens to a character.
After supporting the series from the start and praying for its continuation, I feel betrayed. I'm a reader, after all. I love characters as if they were real. And now I'm in mourning. My sorrow literally rained on my kindle. I can't understand why this would be done to us, Noon and readers alike. I'm deeply disappointed.

I’m a fan of Jill Archer’s Noon Onyx series so I was a pretty disappointed when the publisher dropped the series after three books. Luckily for me, the author decided to self-publish a fourth book! I’ve had Pocket Full of Tinder in my to be read pile since it was released, but I’ve kept putting it off for some reason. I think I just didn’t want to read it if it may be the end. But according to Jill’s website a fifth book is in the works, so I have hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Noon!

Luckily for me, the author decided to self-publish a fourth book! I’ve had Pocket Full of Tinder in my to be read pile since it was released, but I’ve kept putting it off for some reason. I think I just didn’t want to read it if it may be the end. But according to Jill’s website a fifth book is in the works, so I have hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Noon!

I’ve always found the world-building in this series pretty interesting. It’s a post apocalyptic world in that it takes place after the actual biblical apocalypse. There was literal Hell on Earth after the demons won the war. But the world isn’t post-apocalyptic because that’s all ancient history in this world. The descendants of angels and demons and humans all live together in this very changed version of Earth. Magic is rampant and so are demons but there are laws to be upheld even in this world. Noon attends St. Luck’s Law School where she’s training to be a Maegester, sort of a demon lawyer that also has the powers of execution if need be. I really love all of the angel and demon stuff and the way there are different sorts of magic. I also love that it takes place so far in Earth’s future that it’s barely recognizable. There’s enough left that it’s still Earth, sometimes some old history will come through as legends, but it’s essentially a brand new world.

The other thing I really love about these books is the pacing and tone. They very much feel like something akin to an urban fantasy. Like urban fantasies, they’re fast paced and deal with the events of each book with a bit of an overarching plot throughout. These types of series work really well for me because they’re easy enough to pick up one and dive right back in even if it’s been a while. 🙂

As for this installment, well, I do have some thoughts. Noon finds herself assigned to work with her ex after they had parted more than a year before under not so great circumstances. You would expect that things would be awkward, and they are for Noon, but not so much for Ari. He’s still very much into Noon. And she quickly realizes that she had forgiven him some time before. But can they be together again? Meanwhile, they’re busy working together trying to solve a mystery of who is trying to stop this dam from being built before more lives are lost in another explosion.

I felt like the main plot of the book wasn’t that focused. Was it about Noon and Ari’s relationship? Or was it about the dam and the demon politics of Rockthorn Gorge? It’s hard to say because they’re both given equal footing. I don’t mind the relationship stuff at all, but I do think the story would have been better if things been a bit more focused on one or the other with the rest more of a side-plot. But I still did enjoy both aspects. And I also enjoyed the revelations that come near the end, as to who was behind everything. I do love a good twisty turn. Although maybe it would have been a bit more obvious to me if I hadn’t been distracted by certain events of the book which I won’t go into because spoilers.

Speaking of spoilers. I’m a little flabbergasted at this one particular point. Honestly did not think such a drastic event like that would happen. I think I’m still a little bit in shock! I do appreciate that the author went there, however, because it would be an easy thing to avoid. Still! Shock! And I’m also kind of sad. Nooooooooo!

One other thing I really liked about this one is that it’s about Noon coming into her own. She’s continuing to learn to use her magic in new ways. She’s learning that she has to rely on herself instead of others all the time. Noon has had to grow up a lot and it’s clear she’s still got a ways to go. She’s still too rash and impulsive.

Hopefully we’ll get to see more of Noon’s growth in a fifth book. This is a fun series for those of you who enjoy urban fantasy or stories featuring angels and demons with a touch of romance. 3.5/5 stars. ...more

I love Jill's take on the paranormal world. I love the imagery her description is stunning and her characters are phenomenal.
There are so many elements in this book that I think just about anyone will find something to love about it. There's friendships, betrayals, some great action, redemption, love......

There is something for everyone in Pocket Full of Tinder: magical skirmishes, romance, espionage, betrayal, death, and redemption. I really enjoy this series. Noon, her companions, and her foes are well-written and have complex motivations that serve to catapult the story in surprising directions. Although the story starts slow, it's action-packed once it gets rolling.

Jill Archer's world building skill is incredible. Halja can be a perilous place, where humans like Noon, whose bloodlines are mixed with demon blood, use their magical skill to enforce the strict laws of the land to maintain peace. Archer deftly utilizes Latin to provide an authentic feel to Halja's mythos. Rockthorn Gorge in particular is a harrowing locale. Situated in a rugged, northern outpost, Noon must gain access by funicular and then descend a steep ravine, foreshadowing the hazards ahead.

Noon Onyx is a great heroine. Due to her unique position of being the sole human female who possesses waning magic, she is always being tested. In Pocket Full of Tinder she faces her greatest test to date. Pummeled on all sides by demons who want to measure her skills and enemies who want to destroy what she has pledged to defend, Noon must be on top of her game. It doesn't help that she has mixed feelings for her ex-lover and boss, who is determined to win her back. Although powerful and extremely badass, Noon's decisions are tempered by an admirable degree of love and compassion. I appreciate that she has a great sense of humor, is fiercely loyal to her friends and that she has one heck of a stylist.

Archer has taken the series to new heights. Pocket Full of Tinder is an emotional roller coaster for both Noon and the reader. Filled with scares and delights, Noon's story continues to deliver satisfaction and unexpected plot twists. Pocket Full of Tinder can be read as a standalone, but I would suggest reading the entire series; it's time well spent. I really did want to like this. The world-setting has potential, and I really do like the idea of a world ruled by demons and in coordination with demon-descended humans (let's call them the Dark) as well as clerical/faith magic-workers previously allied with the Light. Two millennia after 'God' lost the war for mankind and the Earth, we are in a changed and dangerous land where for the most part humans are not at the top of the food chain. There are things that eat them to keep them humble and I really did want to like this. The world-setting has potential, and I really do like the idea of a world ruled by demons and in coordination with demon-descended humans (let's call them the Dark) as well as clerical/faith magic-workers previously allied with the Light. Two millennia after 'God' lost the war for mankind and the Earth, we are in a changed and dangerous land where for the most part humans are not at the top of the food chain. There are things that eat them to keep them humble and worshipful. At least that's how I look at it.

I now completely dislike this 'heroine' -- who is a whiny incompetent. I really wish that she (view spoiler), and that we might then continue with a more interesting character, and hopefully more detailed and coherent world-building.

Re world-building: Let's dissect some of the most obvious holes in the mythology of this post-Apocalypse Earth ruled by demon-kind. So demons rule and have the right to execute any 'Maegester' who is incompetent. Humans routinely worship demons. In fact, humans lacking magic must worship demons for basic protection against this horrific and dangerous demon-Earth. Yet, 'Noon' recoils from her revealed demon lover (for 2 books no less) because he is a...DEMON.

Really.

He's honorable, courageous, handsome, loving and committed to this human, Noon. He was born a demon from a human mother, and ultimately raised by humans as a magical human.

The author is not that clear about the 'conception' process between a demon and a human; it seems as though he may be half-human and half-demon, as in, does the mother contribute an egg, or is it an entirely magical process? Was there even a demon involved in his conception at all, or did Lucifer just place him in a woman's womb...some readers might like to know. This might have been an interesting plot line to develop.

Noon, on the other hand, has a 'demon-mark', which is a sign that she, like all other magic-bearing humans has at least one demon ancestor, yet she feels entitled to reject someone more recently descended from the demon-human admixture. Which if that is true must mean that at least one of HER ancestors was a drakon (else how else was that ancestor conceived, since demons do not conceive -- life is a gift from Lucifer).

I won't give you any spoilers...! But...the way that this book progresses just leaves me confounded. Am I supposed to sympathize with an idiot hypocrite who is both whiny and obtuse and self-sabotages at every turn of the page? Uh, No. I actually skipped the preceding book as I was already afraid that it would be 300+ pages more of whining, 'barely escaping with her life,' and wavering when making life or death decisions (in situations where there is no time to waver) for Noon.

Overall, I rate this at two stars for a shallow plot-line, simple characterization, repeating episodes very similar to those in prior books (different situations, but the same dynamics), and the absolutely stupid exposition of this world's mythology and landscape. ...more

I picked this series up on a whim and now the Author has a fan for life.
It may seem like a romance book at first but it's more like a self discovery adventure in an amazingly creative setting. The characters and world are intriguing and very well done.
Noon is very well written and executed. She can be clumsy and makes a ton of mistakes, yet she is still definitely powerful and capable. Both sides of her are brought out, making her relatable and endearing. Her journey is one of accepting the way ...more

I enjoyed this. Noon has to go take up her internship, and she knows Ari is her new patron. Though it's been a while since the last book, it didn't take long to get back into this and remember all the good Noon & Ari times.

But a thing happens, and Noon gets a little crazy for a while, and in the end she gets another unusual task as punishment - and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next! ...more

Likes: Once again we have a beautiful cover. I was so happy to see that there is very little repeat information in this installment. The characters still continue to grow, especially Noon who still has so much to learn about herself. This book is heartbreaking—you will have to read it to find out why—but it is also uplifting.

Initial Thoughts: I have waited with baited breath for this novel. I've been dying to know what happens next for Noon, with Ari, with all the characters including Nightshade, Noon's twin brother. This novel was a slow burn to that final defining moment (which I would LOVE to talk about but I don't want to spoil anyone) and then it takes a huge left turn. I am really enjoying reading this series. I received a free copy from NetGalley for an honest review and I am glad I did. Jill Archer is a very good writer, I only wish I had this series in paperback. Really good.
