Author, life stylist and inspirational interior designer Moll Anderson adds the dimension of color to her commonsense design and lifestyle advice, helping you discover the amazing transformation that color can make in your home and life.
Our feelings about color are deeply rooted and emotionally based on our personal lives, and the powerful effect of color is most evident in our homes, where it impacts our moods, behaviors, and emotions. Understanding why you love and dislike certain colors is key to exploring your own personal color story, opening you up to embracing the colors that will renew, revamp, and revitalize your home and life.
First and foremost, for every 5 reviews on this title, 4 were based on readers who received this book as either a gift from the author or the publisher. Further, most of the reviewers rated, but had not actually READ the book. I'm not hating...but I'm just saying...
As for me? I purchased this book at Target and it was not cheap. I was attracted to the beautiful colors of the book, so kudos to Anderson and her people for utilizing the eye- catching colors because I was one of the suckers who was attracted to the light first, and then made the purchase.
I did not really feel like this book taught me about how to use color and where to apply it. I purchased this book already having an idea about the color spectrum, the different hues of the primary colors, and then of course what color can do for mood. If you are looking for a 101 color course and then color and its effect on placement, then this is not going to be the book for you.
Anderson does offer small facts about colors that may be irrelevant to your color search, but her hints on the use of certain colors proves useful or at least, for those that allow their mind to be intrigued, you will find the small facts "interesting" (ex. Did you know carrots were actually grown to be purple in color in the 18th century?)
I finished this book and felt like I really did not gain any knowledge. However, I did gain a new book for my coffee table as well as a book on color that somehow managed to incorporate recipes for colorful cocktails. Moll Anderson, you don't want me to try my hand at color selections while drinking, do you?
There were a lot of pretty pictures in this book and I did learn some things about the history and usage of various colors but I am not sure it taught me anything, decorating wise. Plus, she obviously has A LOT more money than me to spend on these things...
As soon as I heard about this book, I knew I needed to read it. But I didn't expect it to take me back to childhood and help me understand why certain colors feel certain ways to me because of my experiences. I loved the sections on exploring your color memories, but I also loved being educated on how different colors affect our moods and energize or empower us.
Since reading this book I have added a variety of colors, especially little pops of color, throughout the rooms of my home and I couldn't love these more. A number of friends have been in my home and noticed these changes and so I've been able to show them this book… And of course they all want it! I highly recommend it. It did not take long to read, but it's full of life-giving value.
I read this book as a part of my personal challenge to read books from every section of my bookstore. This was the one I chose for home reference, an interior design book that asks you to consider color in a new way. More than just visual, color is emotional, something I've thought for years. Anderson encourages readers to look at their own relationships with color, devoting chapters to each color with multiple examples that go beyond simple wall painting and furniture. I love that she had so many examples of bright, saturated colors, as I'm drawn to jewel tones. Great inspiration, and a really interesting approach!
I have always loved color but was too afraid to put alot of it in my home, but this book has helped me figure out first: why I love the colors i do, and second, how to incorporate them in my life every day. When I look at certain colors I feel happy and peaceful - those colors make me happy so why not put them in my home. When you read this book you will discover why you like certain colors and why you avoid other colors. Looking for a change? Start with this book -Everyone could use some color in their lives
Important - Do not read this book if you don't have any time in the near future to paint! The book is beautiful and really made me think about why I like certain colors and not others. I've always loved color on my walls. (I'm writing from my red dining room.) Every room in my house is a different color, but now I have some ideas for new colors I want to try and no time to paint right now! If you want some ideas on quick and easy ways to add color to home, Moll has recommendations for that too. Overall, the book is a fun, enjoyable study of colors.
I am not a decorator at all! My home is very modge podge and I put things up because I like them, but never really think about what it says about me or TO me. Moll's book was incredibly helpful to me in stepping back and really evaluating what objects I place in my home (I can't paint living in rental).
I love how Moll combines insight into color and art with mood, memory and emotion. She writes about her own journey while providing tangible advice on how to use color - in big and small ways - to make your home a reflection of you. Good to read straight through or to browse for ideas. A lovely gift book too for a new home owner!
I received this book, ARF, as part of a book launch. Honestly, this isn't a book I would've picked up for myself, but I am so glad that I read this thru launch! I have a whole new perspective on color and how it influences our life. This is a great read and as part of your color story this is a perfect addition to any coffee table or library display.
My husband and I moved into our house about 3 years ago and I'm ashamed to admit…we haven't decorated a single room. We are so indecisive about what colors and style we want to incorporate throughout the house. However, we are starting to really want to begin the decorating process very soon. So the opportunity to be a part of this book launch team came along at the perfect time for me. Color has always scared/intimidated me, but this book has inspired me to try new colors and figure out the colors that work for me and my family. After reading this, I have a new perspective on color and how it influences each of our lives and affects our moods.
This book is gorgeous and is filled with such pretty, inspiring, colorful pictures. One of my favorite parts of the book is the "colorful trivia" that she shares about every color talked about in the book. The author gives very simple but effective ways to bring color into your home and I am looking forward to incorporating these simple tips in decorating our house!
I'm so behind on my decorating, it's not even funny. So when I was chosen for Moll Anderson's Book Launch Team, I didn't blink twice. Upon receiving my book, I was instantly in love. This book is glorious and inspiring! This is not your average decorating book. Moll speaks of how colors affect our mood and the psychology of why we gravitate toward certain colors, but avoid others. And then - this is my favorite part - she takes you on a journey through each color: sharing facts, trivia, decorating ideas, flowers, and cocktails (of every color - really!) This book is pure eye candy, but with substance. I absorbed so many ideas - things I'd never consider - and I cannot wait to start using her fabulous tips! Even if you're not into interior design, grab this book for a coffee table read or for a friend! You won't be sorry!
I really was not expecting this book to be as beautiful as it was!! Full page, gorgeous images and ideas for every spectrum of color. Moll Anderson is an amazing designer with a bold yet accessible approach to color. Loved this read!
This is a very different book than I am used to picking up. it looks more like a coffee table book but I promise it is SO much more than that. I have learned so much about how color impacts my emotions and life. Why I tend to surround myself with certain colors, tones and so forth. There is a deep story here, surrounded by beautiful inspirations! I received a complimentary copy of this book for providing my honest review.
Excellent book of color. Great resource to help you discover why you dislike certain colors. This book will help you step out of your color comfort zone and try colors that you think you don't like.
I was honored to be chosen for the launch team of this beautiful book. After receive the ARC, I couldn't put this book down. The book has inspired me to add more color to my life and wardrobe, no more black and grey for me. One thing I really enjoyed was the addition of quotes and "colorful trivia" that were fit into each color section. There are many fascinating tidbits that I didn't realize about the rainbow of colors we can use to decorate our lives.
From Tahitia A. Johnson This was one of the best interior design books. This book should be a course taught in every high school and college art class. It has changed the way I see and introduce color into my home and life.
This is an Amazing book. I never realized what I was missing out on until I started understanding why certain colors affect me in certain ways. Made me realize I needed to get some of the colors I have in my home out . I now want to incorporate bright and happy colors when I can. This is a beautiful book inside and out. It is a must read. Moll Anderson- JOB WELL DONE!!!
This book was such a fun read. Moll did an amazing job of showing you how to bring all the colors into your home and life. The questions were great for diving deeper into how different colors speak to you and finding out why you are attracted to some and not others. I highly recommend this book.
This review is based on an ARC: I was a little skeptical that I could actually change my life with color but was pleasantly surprised about the strong case she makes for adding color to improve your life. Part coffee table book, part self improvement book, it is full of great information and some sections for reflection. There are different sections for each color, facts and info sections and even cocktail recipes. Beyond that, the book is absolutely beautiful. I wanted to crawl into the pages and live in the book. The book itself is a high quality hardback with thick glossy pages that makes it a great addition as a coffee table display book. Well worth the read!
