The second book in a series/trilogy usually fails to get solid footing, but that is not the case here. I don’t do spoiler-filled reviews, so let me give you a rundown and some thoughts.

First off, as the story starts right from when we left off, Sunny has tried using the media to get her mother’s trial reopened. Unfortunately this did not work out like it would have on earth. The Kindred are angry with her and she’s sent early to the planet’s military training and boarding school. I loved Sunny’s character development as the months pass. Her friendships were so varied and fun. Plus the physical and truly alien changes happening within Sunny.
Bullies, weird alien cliques, crazy sports, and mysterious disappearances are a constant.
Sunny vacillates on who she can trust and what she can do. Sinister forces are working hard to promote chaos and fear. I really felt her teen confusion, frustration, as well as her joy at accomplishment.

The world has grown! So many new developments in the species of the world, creation myths, and amazing revelations. My imagination had little work to do, as Ms. Tully crafted the new environments in such stunning detail. I’m fully hooked on this awesome science fiction mystery/coming of age tale.

The ending left me with so many questions and a mighty need to read the next book ASAP! I need the truth and I know it’s out there, probably hiding in book three!

The first book in this series was packed with societal and coming-of-age tension. This second book, in my opinion, ramps that up even higher. Sunny came into her own in Exile and I thought I knew where the story was going, but once again, I was surprised. Happily so. I love the premise of a half-alien, half-human teen being thrust into an alien landscape, fraught with different races who don’t like her or each other. Add in some burgeoning talents on her part, and I’m hooked. I HAVE to see where the author takes this. Yep. Still loving this series. Will be anxiously awaiting book three.

Great continuation of the last book, though with higher stakes. Makes you think about belonging, genetics, racism. Highly recommended for youth and adults.
