This set of audiobooks was fantastic. I shouldn't have expected anything less. Since I discovered Sarah Noffke's work a few years ago I've been nothing but blown away by all of the books I've gotten my hands on. This trilogy was no different.
The world is one like ours but full of magic that is described in detail in both a dark yet whimsical fashion. The circus is a place meant to become a home for Dream Travelers who have none and a place of wonder for patrons who want to believe there is more to this world.
The characters have depth to them and are well thought out. Their relationships are intense and pushed to the limits but the love between the characters is also powerful. Yes there is some instalove but I'm fine with that because it works. It's there but it's not easy and I wanted it to happen. Dave created the Vagabond Circus to bring happiness and magic to the outside world. Zuma was born there. It's in her blood. Jack and Jasmine her fellow acrobats are like family. Finley strives to be a part of it though there is something that sets him apart from the others. That is just the tip of the iceberg of complexities of the society of the Circus and the people who make it up.
The plot of this trilogy is fast moving and intriguing. It gets you hooked right from the start. Once I started listening I couldn't stop. I'd planned to take a break between books but just zoomed through all three once I had started. I needed to know how it ended. There were so many new developments I didn't want to stop. I thought I had predicted the twist at the end but I was wrong. And the end was amazing!
I know I could have gone into a description of the whole story of the book but I'm sure you have read that in the book summary and other reviews so I figured I'd skip it.
One more thing is the narrator. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like him but as the book went on I decided that he fit the tone of the book well. I've listened to 3 of the author's series now all with different narrators and each suited its own series well. In the beginning I'm always a bit apprehensive but then when can I really begin to let myself listen and be taken away by the book; that's when I can tell the narrator is right for the series.

I would like to thank the author/narrator/publisher for generously providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased and honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Book one, Suspended ...A Tale of Grace.
Vagabond Circus Creed:Dave wanted to show the world there was true magic in the world, in the hope they would find magic with in themselves.
We meet the Owner & Ring Master Dr.David Raydon, Who gave up his Psychiatric practice at the Lucidite Institute 20 yrs ago, along with giving his belongings away, he sold his Estate to follow his dream of running a circus. Possessions never brought him true happiness. That was the Beginning of the Vagabond Circus. A kind happy man. Dave had two rules that the performers must live by 1 Show respect to each other at all times. 2 No romantic relationships between performers. He had a very good reason to enforce these two simple rules even though only a select few knew what it was.
Titus- Dave’s long time friend, adviser and Creative Director
Fanny, a wonderful Healer and a Nanny to the younger children at the circus. A mother figure to all.
The Stars of the circus is the Acrobats. Jack, Jasmine, Zuma, a girl who was cursed because she was born at the Vagabond Circus, a girl all fell in love with her beauty and grace. A new comer Finley, a boy shrouded in mystery. (He was there on a mission and he would not fail.) Someone from within the circus family had diabolical plans for Dr. David Raydon.
Ian a crew hand who also could truly see the future and would fill in at Zuma’s Fortune teller booth before the show times after the act story line was changed to incorporate Finley into the act.
The children under Fanny’s care are…
Sunshine she could read emotions and she was the star of the fire act in the show.
Oliver an illusionist as well as a sweet hearted boy.
Emily was the youngest at the age of 4, she was too young to have a job under the Big top. Benjamin was 10 yrs of age and his talent has not yet showed it’s self.
Sebastian was also relatively new to the family, he was 11 yrs of age or so they thought.
The Juggling triplets Haady oldest brother by a few seconds, Padmal the ill tempered sister of the three and Nabhi the youngest brother.
We see how wonderful and close this family was sure it had minor scrimmages or personality conflicts from time to time. Dave was a nurturing loving Father to all. Many of the performers would lay down their life for Dave if needed because he had saved many from a bad life on the streets or in an orphanage. Although Dave would never allow anyone to sacrifice anything on his behalf.
Book two Paralyzed…A tale of secrets.
Secret of the Vagabond circus history had begun to seep out finding the light. Many had felt betrayed. Shouldn't they have know what they were now hearing? Why hadn't the big lovable man confided in them? Some had known Dr. David Raydon their whole lives. They were family and they all but one or two loved the Vagabond circus as much as Dave did.
Tragedy struck like a thief in the night. Vagabond Circus family is deeply grieving for the loss of the heart of Vagabond Circus. Titus the second in charge is beside himself, indecision has paralyzed him. He is over whelmed in his grief. Titus knows he wants to do Dave proud in keeping his legacy alive and thriving. Titus wanted to make David proud but where to start. He spent that first night going back and viewing the events of the evening, he had to get to the truth of just what had taken place and who had carried out the dastardly deed.
Jack, Impulsive Jack, decided he was going to seek retribution for the death of his friend. Jack had no idea what he was in for. They knew Charles Knight was behind the plot to kill one of their family members. Jack was on his way to knights compound.
Zuma enlist the help of Findley to try and save Jack. She had hoped they could cut him off before he got to the Knight compound. Finley was Charles Knight’s first named child, his best thief and the only one who had ever escaped his compound. What Zuma saw in Finley’s mind broke her heart, how can anyone treat their children that way?
Charles knight was a collector of manufactured dream traveler children. He is cold calculating and the children has are his servants, they have nothing not even a name till they reach a point of successful heist and other task for Mr. Knight, then as a reward they get to pick their own name. He rules with an iron fist. Those who do not meet his expectations are killed and disposed of like trash. He has a team of adult Drones that help him with the kids, they are as cold and standoffish as Mr. Knight. Charles compound is designed with traps to keep him from prying eyes and the unwanted attention.
We meet Zuma's family, they are wonderful kind accepting and loving. As wonderful as Zuma's family is ...Jack's family is HORRID! Shallow cold and they care more about appearance then they do their gravely injured son.It is for that reason Finley and Zuma told Jacks parents & his brothers that Jack & Zuma were engaged. Finley died a little inside but he had to do it to shut Jacks family up and to turn the screw just a little more.
Book 3 Released...A tale of treachery
Charles Knight was Dr.David Raydon’s brother and his first performer 20 yrs ago. Where David brought out the good in people, Charles naturally brings out the bad and depravity in people. Charles was banned from the Vagabond Circus yrs ago. At a time when evil had destroyed Dr.Raydon’s beloved circus. Being Daivid’s brother, Charles now owned the majority share and Titus being Dr Raydon’s partner with a holding of 45% of the Circus.
Mr. Knight had driven onto the circus grounds with big black trucks, the man himself had to be 7ft tall wiry and pale. Like he had never seen the sun. Mr Knight’s eyes were cruel and cold. Sabasten the boy Dave had taken in and who had ran away after the tragedy struck was there standing beside this hateful man along with a smaller redheaded girl named Gwen they were Knight’s enforcers and eyes, both very creepy. At the meeting he marched in two rows sad looking children all wearing black t-shirts looking down at the ground , there had to be at least 40 of them. They didn’t speak or look up. Mr.Kight forbid any of the Circus folks from speaking or interacting with “his children” in any way.
Mr.Knight was going to change up the show. Where it was light and airy it was now spooky and heavy. There was drinking and fighting among the Vagabond Circus family, things were going on that Dave would never have allowed. Ian, the crew had had told the performers that they had to stay for the greater good. Ian was never wrong and he had a good reputation so very one listened to him. Knight would plague those who disobeyed him with horrible headaches. They had to play along for now even though everything in them told them to run. No one was happy except maybe Padmal, because she was able to talk Knight into letting them juggle with sharp ice sickles, something Dave had shot down when it was first mentioned. She hated Dave for taking her and her brothers out of the orphanage. She just knew her mother would come back for her some day, but her adoration for Mr.Kinght will be short lived. The performers all felt helpless and miserable. Finley was keeping his distance from Zuma and the others to protect them from the wrath of Knight. Knight would find who or what you loved and he would hurt or destroy them in order to control.
There is a small core group that were planning on getting rid of Knight, Gwen & Sebastian. They just had to keep the Legacy alive of what Dr.Raydon had created they had to take the Circus back.
Fanny had tossed a huge secret. It changed everything in the way Mr. Knightly believed to be true. It made Finley’s life even worse for a time. All hope was not lost. Even though there had been several deaths under Mr. Knights leadership.

I had read a few of Sarah Noffke’s books and enjoyed them immensely. The Vagabond Circus series, however, was the first I listened to.

The story had all the characteristics of a Noffke novel, great characters, fluid writing, and a ‘great scope for the imagination.’

In these books, you may to relate to one of the characters who is an empath. You will feel everything these characters feel. The story will draw you in and hold until the hopeful end.

Honestly, I think these books would translate wonderfully to the big screen.

As for the narrator, I was a little uncertain at first. His cadence and tone were quite different, but once the dialogue got rolling, I was enthralled. This guy is a vocal chameleon! So many voices contained in one human being. It was a little strange hearing his female voices, but since the narrator is male, I didn’t mind it. Every person he did had a unique voice.

My favorites were Finley (the voice of a self confident teenage boy to the note) and Night (sooooo creepy).

It was a great blending of talents between author and narrator!

The Vagabond Circus trilogy is a magical, suspenseful, brutal and yet beautiful story. It transports you to the mesmerizing world of the Dream Traveller's circus, where the magic is real and evil lurks where you least expect it. The author takes you on an emotional roller coaster that's both sad and joyful at the same time. This story has intrigue, manipulation, cruelty, magic and love; at times the tension in this story is so tight that you can barely breath but there are also parts that make your soul soar. The characters are complex, flawed and totally captivating. You are consumed by them, you feel their hope, despair, love, frustration and hate. It is an expertly written story that draws you in and keeps you captive to the end. A truly spellbinding and tension filled story with a beauty that's all its own.

I listened to this collection on Audible and it was fantastic. The Vagabond Circus isn't like any circus you have ever heard about before. It is magical!

It's a good thing I had the whole set because I went from one book to the next without waiting. I just needed to know what was going to happen next. I've read or listened to other books in the Dream Traveler world, and I looked forward to those times when I heard about a character from another series. But this series was different, a little darker, a little more mature, but still young adult appropriate. I truly enjoyed it and I hope other readers do to.

A Man On A Mission

Dr. David Raydon, the Ringmaster, gave up his psychology practice to create Vagabond Circus. He searches for precious Dream Traveler children in orphanages and on the streets, where some live unwanted and forgotten. Vagabond Circus exists to provide the lost and lonely Dream Travelers a place to be illustrious, but it also shows the nonbelievers that there is still magic in the world. If they believe, then they care, and if they care, then they don’t destroy.

But to do that he’ll have to further scar his soul.
Total Score: 5/5

Summary:

This audio book series was both riveting and compelling. The narrator brought each character to life by his unique interpretation and portrayal. Vagabond Circus brought both suspense to life for their fans as they used their special abilities as Dream Travelers to change their lives allowing them to believe in the magic around them. The desire of David, the owner and ring leader, to give each of his people not what they wanted, but what they needed created a wonderful and loving atmosphere in the circus. Dave’s willingness to accept anyone who needs help was the thing kept the circus fresh, but may be what could be the end of it when tragedy struck bringing a past foe who is determined to change everything.

This is a three part series that takes the reader through Ecstasy to tragedy as the characters fight to protect each other and their lives at the Vagabond Circus. Finley, Zuma, and Jack’s lives may never be the same as they and the others determination to keep David’s dream alive.

Overall, I enjoyed this series and thought that the narrator did a good job on the audio version. I liked some of his voices better than others. I loved Finley's but hated Charles'. But it all averaged out. Here are my brief thoughts on completing each book.

Suspended
Pretty good so far, I say 'so far' because it's obviously just part one of the trilogy. It ends on a cliffhanger. But so far I like the plot, the magic system, and the characters. (Though I spent a lot of the book thinking Finley was a total jerk-face.) There is a bit of insta-love, which is annoying. But I kind of see opportunities for it to be explained in the future. We'll see. I'll hold of final judgment until I finish the series; all of which I have, since I'm actually listening to the Vagabond Circus Boxed Set.

I do have to admit though that I've been really annoyed by the short chapters. Maybe that wouldn't bother me so much if I wasn't listening to an audio instead of reading it, but it feels like the narrator is always having to interrupt the story to note, "Chapter 64," etc.

Paralyzed
Very much a middle book in a trilogy where the books don't stand alone. But, taking the series as a whole, it's still fairly enjoyable. The villain has finally been revealed and the primary couple is finally admitting to loving one another.

Released
I generally enjoyed it. I was seriously disappointed that the author seemed to go back on all the diversity she'd included in the series by having the sole queer character (as well as only black main character) die and the only other woman of color that I recall be horrid and also dying. I don't think you get accolades for including diverse characters (which I was all geared up to give) if you just kill them off.

I also thought that, given that the circus was full of powerful, skilled people, the ending was overly drawn out. But it was still pretty good.

I received this boxset in exchange for an honest review. I had listened to the first book, Suspended, before, so was very happy to receive the boxset. This is a well crafted trilogy, full of suspense, pain, triumph, and magic. Caution: spoilers included

Finlay joins the Vagabond Circus, a circus made up of Dream Travellers, a race of humans with special gifts. He has secrets he does not, or can not reveal. Throughout the first book, he develops as an acrobat annoys his fellow acrobats. At the end of the first book, he is accused of murder, and some of his secrets revealed.

The second book, Paralyzed picks up directly from the events of the first book and finds Jack, one on the acrobats, on a mission to try to get retribution for the murder in the first book. Finlay and Zuma go after him and find him injured and the man they all were looking for gone. The three acrobats eventually return to the circus so that Jack can heal from his injuries, only to find the man they were looking for had taken over the circus, and turned it from the magical, dreamlike wonder everyone was used to, to a dark, horrific nightmare.

The third book, Released, is the culmination of the triumphs and heartbreak from the first two books as the circus performers rally to take back their circus and restore it to the grandeur of its origins. All secrets are revealed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy. I found it engaging, tense, edge of the seat moments, heartache and joyful. I thought Steve Barnes did a wonderful job as the narrator.

The only real annoyance I found in the entire series is the author's phrasing at points, but this can be overlooked as the writing style, and definitely doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the series.

This box set includes all three novels in Sarah Noffke’s Vagabond Circus series of young adult paranormal fantasy, which is part of her Dream Traveler universe. It’s an interesting world, and I always enjoy learning about different Dream Travelers and their abilities. Each novel tells part of a continuing story, so the box set is a convenient way to read them in order.

I loved the premise of a circus of orphan Dream Travelers struggling to survive, but the story gets off to a slow start. It gets much more exciting and suspenseful toward the end, and the conclusion was satisfying.

The story is told in short chapters that alternate among many different characters’ points of view. I found that a bit jarring, although it does allow the reader to know and understand the characters better, particularly by the time we get to the final novel. Most of the characters are interesting, but a few are too one-dimensional and not at all likeable. In fact, my biggest complaint about this book is that the villains are so completely over the top. Ms. Noffke has written plenty of fascinating, complex characters, and I wish she would invest more effort in creating complex, relatable villains.

Note that the book includes descriptions of violence, gory injuries, death, and horrendous child abuse.

Steve Barnes did a fine job with narration. He’s easy to understand, and his pacing is good. He created interesting character voices and conveyed emotions well. I could easily imagine Charles Knight twirling his mustache while laughing maliciously. His voice struck me as a bit too breathy and sibilant in the first book, but that improved for the latter two books.

The author provided me with a free copy of this audiobook, and I volunteered to provide an honest review.

Audiobook review: Dream travelers and a wild adventure with dark mysterious secrets, love, & a villain. The characters have depth, highs & lows, but all believable and interesting. The storyline has depth and is quite entertaining. The narrator did a great job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene. I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

awesome series

This series had so many ups and downs, yet was threaded with an optimistic idea that kept appearing, in spite of the many bad things that kept happening. So many story lines went through this tale, yet they all interconnected around the special theme, the vagabond circus. So much emotion, I had to put it down for a while at times. I will definitely revisit this one in the future. A real masterpiece, indeed.

Audiobook- rounded up 2.5 stars to 3. Reader is fine. The story is alright I guess. A bit too much teenage angst for me. I found myself getting annoyed with the major characters. By the end of it all I was ready for it to be finished. I think I should have done this collection one at a time instead of going through all at once.

Don't survive but THRIVE

Things do not follow a recipe but flow an unexpected route. We know our characters true nature and that tells us where we must go. The path may not be clear but we are dragged to the right goal.

A compellingly weird series! It’s a bit darker than the usual upbeat fantasy circus book. I’m quite glad the whole series is out as the books build to a terrible fight between pettiness and love.

The setting of the story takes place in a circus.

The characters are well written and developed and the story line is filled with Suspense and Magic.

I don't want to give too much away, but I will say that this series is thoroughly Entertaining and is a Good Read for just about everyone including teenagers and young adults.

Steve Barnes did well with the narration.

3.5 Stars Overall for the whole series

A cozy, magical fiction read with an intriguing background mystery that’s casually alluded too, but revealed only in piecemeal. The mystery and magic of the circus was comforting and I loved the idea of a circus bringing positivity to the world. The characters and their dream magic were colorful and really brought the world of Vagabond Circus to life.

The reason I could rate this higher is a personal pet peeve, a lot of repetitive phrases. If you’ve established once or twice that a person is speaking through a telepathic link, then it doesn’t need to be stated every time there’s a response. It grated on me after a while.

Poor Finley’s story and progression over the course of the three books was so sad and you just wanted him to be happy. He was a grounded character and a look in to Vagabond circus for the outsider perspective. Dream Travelers and all the different manifestations of each persons power was varied enough to feel fresh when a new one was introduced. Each member of the circus was a unique part of a beautiful whole and I loved watching Finley become hopeful that he could be a part of this family.

The second book however, I almost gave up on. It’s so much of Zuma being a malicious b*tch and saying awful things to Finley. Then Zuma gets annoyed that He doesn’t want to discuss his painful past with her right after she said more mean things to him. Some background thoughts and concerns of circus members while Zuma and Finley go to save Jack. That’s pretty much the entire book two, I’m not exaggerating.

Book three however finally brought all those things together and in a twist I def knew was coming. There was a bit too much beat it over your head “that vagabond circus is now a sad, nightmarish place.” And I felt the final battle was a bit too drawn out. I did really Love the ending and it’s comfort and hope regarding Finley and the circus.

I enjoyed the read overall. I just think it could’ve been so much more if the repetitive language was tightened up and the pacing a bit more fluid. The characters were fun though and the world was well thought out. Charles Night was a great villain too. The background between Night and the Circus was twisty and sad, but the message of overcoming was powerful.

Welcome to the circus, thank the heavens that there aren't any clowns!! This circus is unlike any other circus on earth, it is a Dream Traveller circus which means in short that it is amazing. The magic of this circus, well maybe it is actually magic? And then there is the whole story which Sarah Noffke weaves into the reason for the circus, it's riveting and darkish for Noffkeland. Pay attention there are all kinds of threads weaving off as to who belongs to who and what and where, it's a fun side game to play in every series now... Quite possibly her best work to date.

Suspended #1. It was a well written, interesting read, with intriguing, well-developed characters. The book started slowly but once it picked up it was full of twists & turns that leave you guessing. The Dream Travelers & the circus are unique and very creative, although they did remind me of X-Men. The characters each had their own differing personalities. I need book 2 ASAP!!! The entire book left you wanting to know so much more, but also left so many unanswered questions about the circus, its origins, the curse and what happened 20 years ago to name just a few. Since I own both the Audible and Kindle editions, I was able to follow along while the narrator adds richness with his voice inflections.
Paralyzed #@. A well written, interesting read, with intriguing, well-developed characters. The book picks up where the first book ends. Again the writing is full of twists & turns that leave you guessing. The Dream Travelers & the circus are unique and very creative, although they still remind me of the X-Men. For all the questions about the circus answered in this book, many more remain, what is Fanny’s secret? For most of the book, there are two concurrent storylines, one with the circus and one with Finley, Zuma, and Jack. Since I own both the Audible and Kindle editions, I was able to follow along while the narrator adds richness with his voice inflections.
Released #3. A well written, interesting read, with intriguing, well-developed characters. The book picks up where the second book ends. Again the writing is full of twists & turns that leave you guessing. The Dream Travelers & the circus are unique and very creative. Since I own both the Audible and Kindle editions, I was able to follow along as the narrator read. In this book, I gained, even more, appreciation for the narrator adding richness and character with his voice inflections, and the last 30% of the book has so many twists & turns and ties up all the loose ends as well!
