Review for Seduction's Gift by Angela Knight

This is one of my favorite books of all time. I love the King Arthur stories, and love modern retellings...but I've always hated Lancelot. This book is the exception. This book makes me love Lancelot.

I loved the history Lance has with Grace. I love how he took her under his wing when she was a teenager, and how she had a massive crush on him. I loved how he realized he wanted her for himself. Yes, I wish this were a longer book, mostly because every time I read it, I'm not ready for it to be over.

This is definitely a must read!

An anthology of four short, hot blooded, and erotic stories.

In 2004, it received the Hughey Award for Best Anthology as well as the P.E.A.R.L. for Best Anthology.

The Series
"Dark Hunger" (Dark, 11.5 in my chronology; 14 per Goodreads chronology)
"Night Owl" (Midnight, 4)
"Seduction's Gift" (Mageverse, 0.5)

The Stories
Christine Feehan's "Dark Hunger" finds Riordan De La Cruz the captive of a master vampire and his minions, subject to their experimentations with a paralyzing injection in a South American laboratory.

This short story is a dip into a Carpathian life and brings together the Carpathians with the jaguar shifters, notably Juliette Sangria, her sister Jasmine, and her cousin Solange.

Maggie Shayne's "Awaiting Moonrise" is a nice bit of rather forward romance. A complete story with a full range of emotions from betrayal to fear to the joy of discovery to the hot blood of an erotic romance. It was interesting to read about the herbs used in the magic recipes and how their scientific properties contribute to the magic.

Emma Holly's "Night Owl" is quite yummy with Holly's descriptions of Mariann's baked goods, her own breakfasts (!), and the Luce "brothers" next door who are fixing up the Night Owl Inn. It's also funny in how accepting a town can be of eccentricity when it comes with money. Its sweetness comes from Mariann's cooking, but also from Bastien's shyness. He's so in love and so timid about pursuing it.

I do find Holly's Midnight series to be rather frustrating for my OCD self, as it tends to be a loose collection of stories about different upyr groups from a range of historical periods. The primary connection is that they're all upyr, vampires. They also seem to connect back, eventually, to another character, but don't plan on any future readings about a character you have enjoyed in the past.

Angela Knight's "Seduction's Gift" is a prelude to Knight's Mageverse series that provides a twist on King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table. Quite an erotic twist *she says as she fans her hot-blooded cheeks*. Knight does a good job of introducing the whole concept of her Magi and Maja and their purpose in this short story. It also provides the background for their version of our universe.

I do love that Grace blows Lancelot off at the start, lol. She may love the boy, but there ain't gonna be no insta-love here, *more laughter*, not after what Grace has experienced. And Morgana has a scary threat which Lance slowly reveals to us in all its nasty detail. Creates a good conflict. Very nicely done.

The Cover and Title
The cover is abstract until you can focus in on the sweep of a woman's blood-red varnished nails as she sweeps the dark fall of hair away, baring her neck for some Hot Blooded antics.

Two out of four isn't bad, but it could be better.
Christine Feehan's Dark Hunger is the usual Dark Series book. Hot and sexy - and a great introduction to the stories of the five De La Cruz brothers.
Maggie Shayne disappointed me - her story didn't have the right vibe.
Emma Holly's storytelling and plot improved from the novella in Fantasy. At least it made me laugh.
Seduction's Gift by Angela Knight made me lift my eyebrows and say "Huh?!" at first - but then - wow! And let me repeat that: wow! Really hot blooded, indeed! Since this book she's on my favorite's list.

This review is for Awaiting Moonrise / The Night Owl / Seduction's Gift only. For Dark Hunger find my review in that book.

Awaiting Moonrise is the second story in the anthology Hot Blooded written by Maggie Shayne and published in August of 2004. Maggie Shayne contributed to this along with three other writers - Christine Feehan, Emma Holly and Angela Knight.

Stars: 2.5 / 5
Recommendation: A simple and straight-forward plot with no sudden surprises, very predictable.

Professor Jenny Rose - a cryptozoologist - comes to Louisiana bayous to research and find the truth behind the legends of loup-garou, a lycanthrope. In her research she comes across, Dr. Samuel La Roque - a local doctor of the small town's only clinic. Sparks fly immediately between them, but she fears he is more than what he seems to be.

A simple and straight-forward plot with no sudden surprises. Maggie Shayne pretty much keeps to the paranormal plot with the other world, but there is not a lot of meat for it to be a memorable plot. Very predictable and easy to guess what comes next. Of course the romantic angle is certainly there.

For a plot of 95 pages, it is marginally good one. Could have been a bit more meatier to make it not so easy read.

The Night Owl is the third story in the anthology Hot Blooded written by Emma Holly and published in August of 2004. Emma Holly contributed to this along with three other writers - Christine Feehan, Maggie Shayne and Angela Knight.

Stars: 3 / 5
Recommendation: An easy steamy plot with paranormal erotic content and less surprising turn of events.

This is 4th book in her Midnight Desire Series that began with Luisa's Desire. I had read Emma Holly's story Luisa's Desire in the 2002 anthology Fantasy that she published along with three other writers - Christine Feehan, Sabrina Jeffries and Elda Minger. However, I don’t believe I published my review then, I had only posted for Christine Feehan's story The Awakening (https://inspirethoughts.livejournal.c...) then. Although I did think that her take on Vampires was different from what I read in Christine Feehan's Carpathian Series (http://inspirethoughts.livejournal.co...).

I do not remember if after reading Lusia's Desire did I want to read Emma Holly's books, but after reading The Night Owl, I am slightly inclined to read the rest of the books in this series at least, even if I pick them again. Though my focus would perhaps limit to this series of Emma's rather than other books since she is famous for writing erotica-romance with a focus on BDSM and sometimes has her male protagonist as a bisexual - both being not my cup of tea to sip.

Back to the story in question, it revolves around Mariann O'Faolin - owner of the baker O'Faolin's - and Bastien Luce - new co-owner of the inn, Night Owl, attached to the bakery. The plot is set in the fictional town of Maple North in Vermont.

Bastien Luce finds his mate in Mariann O'Faolin. However having been sent away from home country, he tries to keep his instincts and cravings to himself, while Luce's settle themselves in the community. Mariann finds him charming and at the same time very unnerving. However, the chemistry between them is off the charts.

But Mariann has her own battles to fight, much less get involved with a person like Bastien. And who or what was Bastien - an immortal upyr, a vampire. How will they overcome their desires, fight their battles, find middle ground to live together forever is the rest of the plot spun by Emma Holly.

Bastien and Emile are the upyrs, the Vampires immortal. I remember reading about upyr in Luisa's Desire. These vampires resemble more of the ones we read in Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series. However the process that Emma Holly writes about to convert a human mortal to vampire, it is very closely similar to what Christine Feehan has in her Carpathian Series. Not only that, the lifestyle of Emma's Vampires resemble a lot of Carpathians life. The difference I see is that Emma's vampires have skin like ice just as Stephanie's vampires. That’s a lot of similarities that Emma has with other authors. Who plagiarized who will be unknown to the reader though.

A very steamy plot with lots of inconsequential details hidden within. Not sure if all will become a sort of sequel of If they will remain as stand-alone books by the author for the series. However, this plot is purely around the relationship between Bastien and Mariann. I was hoping it would have more story than just erotic content.

All in all an easy read about the world of vampires and humans.

Seduction's Gift is the last story in the anthology Hot Blooded written by Angela Knight and published in August of 2004. Emma Holly contributed to this along with three other writers - Christine Feehan, Maggie Shayne and Emma Holly.

Stars: 3 / 5
Recommendation: Anyways, all in all an easy read about the world of vampires, witches and humans.

This is the second book released part of the anthology in her Mageverse Series. The plot revolves around Grace Morgan - a Deputy Sherriff in the Tayanita County - and Lancelot du Lac - the Assassin of Avalon and a vampire. The plot is set in South Carolina.

Angela Knight takes a spin on Arthurian world with vampires who can reproduce, where men are turned to vampires - Magi or Magus - while women to witches - Maja or Majae - by way of the process of Gift, and each one mated to the other. They live in a parallel world, Mageverse. She has many more complexities tied around the relationships between the vampires and witches, unique abilities and gifts surrounding them.

In this plot the High Courts send Lancelot to give the Gift to Grace Morgan, for a higher purpose. Although Grace doesn't want it she succumbs to Lancelot's charms and his sexual attempts. But will she want the Gift? Or will Lancelot finally find his mate?

The concept is really good, so close to what I read of Carpathian series by Christine Feehan. But there were a few things that kind of didn’t get to me well - like if someone doesn’t want to get the Gift, the High Courts could force a gang rape to give that person the Gift so they can work for the High Court and spring forth their agenda. I do feel that sometimes in the Carpathian series, the women are left with little choice as to who they want their lifemate to be, but with this plot, I felt that women are treated as commodities and nothing more.

Of course Lancelot and Grace were totally different, them being the Protagonists, but the works of High Courts and their schemes resembled so close to the social evils humans have. I am not sure how different can these people from Mageverse than any human being is something I couldn’t grasp at.

Yes, definitely a steamy erotic plot, and definitely has more meat than Emma Holly's vampires. Yet, a little hesitation at my end to pick this series again. Perhaps it might be like the Leopard Series, that I didn’t like at first but again picked it up later after a later book impressed me. May be I should read the latest book in the series before I write-off on this book.

Anyways, all in all an easy read about the world of vampires, witches and humans.

Spoiler Alerts:

1) Awaiting Moonrise:
a. Although it didn’t register until the end of the book, looks like Jenny Rose also carries a wolf inside here whom she can call at will.
2) The Night Owl:
a. Plot reveals:
i. Interestingly enough, Emma Holly dedicates this book to the Spanish author Suzanne Powell.
ii. Night Owl is co-owned by two friends - Bastien Luce and Emile Luce - who look more alike to be brothers.
iii. Bastien Luce is forced to leave his country that he calls home, second time - first by a tyrant and now by a friend, his pack leader Ulric. This one statement leaves the readers with the hope that there is a lot more where that came from by Emma Holly. Perhaps in the previous books or the following books we might read more about it.
iv. Emma also mentions about a long ago time when Emile almost lost his legs and that Bastien went to great lengths to save him. Another elaborated plot perhaps in another book.
3) Seduction's Gift:
a. Plot reveals:
i. How fitting that the license plate of the Jaguar X-Type drove by the protagonist is named KNIGHT1 - so close to the author's last name and also fitting that he is a Knight at Arthurian's court.
b. Geographical / Character / Grammatical / Historical Errors:
i. On Pg. 343, Line 26, there is a repeat of the words "unable to"

Dark Hunger by Christine Feehan - 4
Juliette saves Riordan from a laboratory. He recognizes her as his lifemate and flees with her through the forest, not realizing she's a jaguar shifter. Her and her kind have been hunted by jaguar males, raped and tortured. A lot of hot sex scenes with the usual Carpathian conversion. Nice read, great introduction to the jaguar shifters and seeing strong powerful woman.

Awaiting Moonrise by Maggie Shayne - 4
Jenny is a Professor searching for an undiscovered animal, but finds a werewolf. She wants to study, and provide proof of her findings. Samuel's family has been cursed but his attraction to Jenny and her accidental discovery of what he was means he has to put his faith in her not to ruin his life. With all of that someone is destroying the evidence she has gathered and she has a creepy, snoopy Professor on her team. Okay read, I think I would have liked more development, but that's not always easy to do with a short story.

The Night Owl by Emma Holly - 4
Some small editing issues. She's a pastry chef, he's an upyr. He and his friend purchased the inn next to Mariann's bakery. He's been attracted to her for a long time but is portrayed as shy and unsure of approaching her. That portrayal of Bastien didn't really fit, when later he's described as being a candidate to lead and run a pack, and his ruthless behavior in trying to save his friend. I did like this couple, and their chemistry was very steamy.

Seduction's Gift by Angela Knight - 4
A different take on Arthur, his knights and Merlin. Merlin and Nemue are aliens/fae who came to earth, selecting Arhur and his nights to drink from Merlin's Cup to change them. Either the original or descendants of those who've drank from Merlin's cup, changing men into vampire Champions of the earth and women into Majae. Those descendants who are deemed worthy of the gift, have their powers unleashed through sex. Grace has turned her back on them all not wanting the Gift after they refused her mother. She's now a police officer in the realworld Earth plane. Lancelot is a seducer and assassin, sent to awaken Grace's gift. She's had a crush on Lancelot since she first met him as a young girl. Those descendants not chosen are often neglected, however when necessary they are placed in a Sanctuary to protect and care for them. There's a ton of information and world building/explanation packed into this short, while still delivering Lancelot and Grace's story. Grace is needed to fight the upcoming evil, Lancelot must not fail or her grandmother might order her gang raped to trigger her gift. Their heat ensures it's going to happen, a fun reading, but ending was a bit too quick wrapped.

Dark Hunger by Christine Feehan is book 14 in the Dark Carpathian Series. I read this "short story" in an anthology, and this review is only for Dark Hunger.

Riordan is an ancient and powerful Carpathian male living in the jungles of South America with his brothers. Trapped and caged by the same beastly Morrison Psychic Research Center that has been endangering the lives of all immortals throughout the series, Riordan will give his life before becoming the bait to bring in his brothers and others of their kind.

Deep within the jungle, Juliette lives with her sister Jasmine and cousin Solange. On a mission to liberate wild animals from the Morrison Center's secret jungle lab, Juliette stumbles upon something she did not expect - Riordan. As Juliette frees him from his captors, Riordan realizes that he's found his lifemate, but Juliette has her own secrets to protect...

As you may have noticed, I'm not a huge fan of the "short stories" in this series. Usually, the stories from the anthologies are just too short to be as good as the rest of the series. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE WITH Dark Hunger! It was really exceptional.

Dark Hunger is vivid, and beautifully written. Feehan's writing is fluid and lyrical, and her style of multiple point-of-views is outstanding. I'm really intrigued by the "jaguar people" we've been hearing about for awhile now, and was happy to see a little more of them in this book. I can't wait to see what happens next, so I'm officially moving book 15 to the top of my tbr pile.

Each of the stories were awesome adventures. Dark Hunger takes you into the breathtaking rain forests of the Amazon, where you meet Riordan and Juliette to join them in their struggle to earn not only each other's trust, but join together as lifemates, while racing against time to save Jasmine from the clutches of jaguar-men hell-bent on making her suffer. Awaiting Moonrise takes you into the heart of the bayou where mysterious creatures often dwell and shows you anything you thought you might know, you truly didn't. The Night Owl brings a new take on "vampire" or "werewolf" to the table with Bastien and Emile, these two really sparked my interest and compelled me to continue reading to see what happened next. Seduction's Gift now, while this story was interesting, I had some trouble connecting with any of the characters or immersing myself into the story. Out of the 4 novellas that comprise this novel, Seduction's Gift was the only one I did not like.

Ok I initially wanted to read this so I ccould read the Carpathian novella from Christine Feehan "Dark Hunger" and it was fairly typical of all the others in the series with the exception that Juliette (the woman who become converted) actually welcomes the change. But it is the other stories in this anthology that make this collection great. I suppose I enjoyed Emma Holly's "the Night Owl" the most. Mariann is a mature woman who lives alone in the country town as the local baker, who is eventually swept off her feet by one of the resident vampires. Maybe I just like vamps the most - I am not sure, but this one really tickled my fancy! Angela Knight tantalised me with her vampire knight Galahad from the anthology "Bite" and here in "Seduction's Gift" Lancelot lives up to his reputation as a horny hunk of vampy knight in shining armour. YUM!

I always find it hard to rate an anthology, because inevitably I really like some and really don't like others, and that holds true here. On the strength of Christine Feehan's Dark Hunger, tho, I give this an overall 3.5*

Christine Feehan's Dark Hunger gets a strong 4* - loved Riordan & Juliette & looking forward to stories about Jasmine & Solange
Maggie Shayne's Upyr story gets a weak 3*
Emma Holly's cute story gets 3.5* just because it was so cute
Angela Knight's Mageverse is definitely not for me - just 2* there & won't be continuing that series

Bumped up to 5⭐️ on Goodreads because I rated the stories, in order, 4.25⭐️, 4⭐️, 4.25⭐️ and 4.5⭐️ so I feel the rating should be rounded up not down.

Overall 4.25⭐️4🌶️. I’m writing this review as I finish each book within the anthology. I don’t usually read anthologies because it involves very short stories which means, for me, that there isn’t ample time to create a detail-rich story. Normally there isn’t enough time in an anthology book for any of that to happen, except this book broke the norm for me starting with the very first book.

Dark Hunger by Christine Feehan: 4.25⭐️3.5🌶️. This was the first book. 108 pages. Loved it! It broke all of my assumptions about anthology stories. The characters were developed and the world building was on point for immersing my senses. The different “creatures” in this story were complex and made me want to learn more. This story did exactly what it was supposed to do in that I absolutely want to read more Dark series books. There were detailed sex scenes that were dirty as well as traditionally romantic. It was a refreshing change.

Awaiting Moonrise by Maggie Shayne: 4⭐️2.5🌶️. 2nd book; 85 pages. Quick read but still had enough action and plot that the story was interesting and kept me reading. The twisty twist was a not surprising but even so it was a good story. The sex was barely there but was present.

The Night Owl by Emma Holly: 3rd book; 79 pages. 4.25⭐️4🌶️. Really good short story. I really liked the plucky FMC as she was relatable, funny and direct. The storyline about the creature in this story was really good and I wished it was a longer story so I could see it evolve some. The sex scenes were petty detailed and hot. Enjoyed!

Seduction’s Gift by Angela Knight: 4th book; 98 pages. 4.5⭐️4.5🌶️. All of the short stories were really good but this last one was the best! A King Arthur & the Knights of the Roundtable retelling with a vampire/magi spin. I liked the character development, world building, magic Mageverse and blood-sucking connection. It was a very well done short story and is part of her Mageverse standalone series which I will be checking out.

I chose to read Hot Blooded because I wanted to read Angela Knight’s prequel to her MageVerse series. I ended up reading all 4 stories:

Dark Hunger by Christine Feehan: This is the first book I’ve read by Christine Feehan. Though it can be read as a stand-alone, after finishing the short story, I learned that Dark Hunger is part of Christine Feehan’s Dark series. It’s about Riordan, a Carpathian and Juliette, a black panther shape shifter. I was intrigued by both these characters and I am considering going back to read more about the Carpathian‘s

Awaiting Moonrise by Maggie Shayne: this is the first story I’ve read by Maggie Shayne. It was probably the weakest of the four stories in this book, though I liked the hero and heroine.

The Night Owl by Emma Holly: I’ve read another short story by Emma Holly and I really enjoyed this one. It was a very seductive meet-up between Mariann, a human, and Bastien Luce, an upyr or Vampire. Compared to some of the other books written by Emma Holly, this was somewhat tame. I loved the way Bastian was so shy about getting together with Mariann.

Seduction’s Gift by Angela Knight: A prequel to the MageVerse series, this is the story about how Lancelot and Grace got together. I had read about Lancelot and Grace in a previous short story I read, and I was compelled to go back and read the beginning stories of the series. This was a really sexy, seductive story about how Lancelot finally “settles down”.

This is a fantastic paranormal romance, erotica collection. It’s wonderfully lustful and desirable. The women are all strong-willed and strong-minded, which I always love. And, ultimately the worlds that were introduced were intense, powerful and impossible to forget.

Luckily, I already know and love all of the authors in this collection. Reading this doesn’t clog up the rest of my wish list, but it does make me grateful that these women help to fill my shelves. These stories are filled with some intriguing paranormal creatures and incredibly passionate nights. Which were great late at night when I was curled up feeling a little lonely myself.

The very intense and lustful nature of these stories honestly makes me just want to pick up all of the novels that I have on my shelves. There is something intriguing about these authors and the worlds they create that are kind of impossible to keep out of your head. Which is kind of why I love them so much…

I got this book because of the Angela Knight story, as I wanted to start the Mageverse series. I liked her story, and I found myself liking the others a bit also, even though I'm not a big fan of anthologies. I think I liked Emma Holly's story the least... I just never really liked the hero very much. All of these stories felt a bit rushed and short, but I may be interested in more of Feehan's work now. Definitely going to read more Angela Knight! The book was an ok read if you're looking for series fill-ins.

Dark Hunger - I couldn't get into this story & found it very muddling. I don't know why as I usually enjoy this type of fantasy romance.

Awaiting Moonrise....loved it....

The Night Owl..... loved this one too...

Seductions Gift ...& I really liked this one!

I'm glad I didn't let my disappointment of the first story put me off reading the others as I thoroughly enjoyed them, especially the "wolfie" ones! I'd certainly read more by these authors or in this style.

Sólo leí mageverse 0.5 y me gustó bastante!

I got this for the Mageverse short, and I didn't mind the Christine Feehan but I DNFed 2 of the others...in one the Doc essentially molests her when going into the clinic, but that's OK he is hot, in another she thinks the cute "weirdo" drugged her but the sex was great so whatever. WTF, not my kind of read

The descriptions on the back of the book made the stories sound interesting... Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. I tried to give each separate story a shot, but I couldn't finish a single one. Life is too short to waste time reading boring books.

Four different stories that were short but good I enjoyed all of them all were written with vampers, Tall dark and handsome, immortal that walk at night and day blends in with the human race. Which are short stories that lets you inside some new vampers author's that you can take a bite from.

Dropped the first and second stories. They lost my interest.

The third story was ok. I finished it.

The last story though. Omg. Loved it. Will definitely try to read more from this author.

Not the best, not the worst but more erotica than romance or fantasy. Such is the danger of buying online.

I liked all the books in this series. I first read the Christine Feehan as I was reading the books in the Dark series and then I came back and read the other books.
