Focusing Emptiness A Mytho-Poetic Journey to the Lost Child by Michael P. Staples
Focusing Emptiness opened my eyes to the spiritual consequences of childhood trauma through a compelling and winding narrative through the life of the author, Staples. While the book infused educated psychological self-analysis to the progression of life events and decisions, never did I feel alienated by the author. Michael Staples is an amazing author. He was able to get me to feel emotions for a stranger I didn't know I could. I understand his "Emptiness" now. This book is written so beautifully and smartly; Staples doesn't spare the reader any of the details of why he needed a journey to his "Lost Child". I don't personally know Michael Staples, but aft ...more

Depth Psychology

Self Evolution (Individuation)
Great Storytelling
Family Drama

Just blown away. White Oleander and The Glass Castle come to mind. Not sure if I've read anything as hauntingly beautiful in a similar genre written by a male. Just gorgeous.

#FocusingEmptiness is a truly incredible and insightful narrative into the life of Michael Staples. Written with humor, warmth and one quick turn after another - Michael takes us from a California childhood to disarming bombs in Vietnam to learning the art of Wushu martial arts.
