A heartwarming festive read that reflects a little girl's anticipation of her uncle's arrival on Christmas Eve, her feeling sad he's not with her family yet and wondering if he would ever come. Also about small treasures we always come across if we just stop for a moment or two and notice all the beauty that is out there surrounding us. 




One thing I learned from here I didn't know about as a kid was snowballs with maple syrup 🤔. Yes, we thought snowballs and icicles being delicious - as they are - I don't recall we have been ever pouring jam or chocolate on them (maybe because we didn't bring them home...) but it sounds fun and innovative to me and reminds of a Japanese shaved ice desert Kakigōri flavored with syrup or other flavorings. 

I'm glad I came across this festive story while perusing Christmas books! 🩷🌲

Karin is looking forward to her uncles visit, he comes each year at Christmas and she is really looking forward to seeing him. He is late and worries he won't come, her mother asks her to go to the shop for her, on her journey stops to talk to people and remembers things about her Uncle. When she gets back can see his truck in the drive and stops for a moment to enjoy the feeling of relief that he has arrived and anticipation of the fun they will have together.

A simple but enjoyable story about looking forward to seeing loved ones and spending time together at Christmas.

Julia wasn't very eager to read this but ended up warming up to it a bit. I think the reason she warmed up so was because she has a favorite uncle and she was able to relate to Karin in that way. Without that I think this would have been a dud for her.
The story is quite simple with Karin waiting for her Uncle to arrive for Christmas. He comes each year, only once a year usually, and always at the same time... except for this year - he's late. And Karin's worried.
Karin runs out to the store for her Mother and while she's gone her uncle arrives. But on her walk to the store and back Karin meets a few people, sees a few things, etc. - all of which remind her of good memories of her uncle.
I think my favorite parts where when Karin slowed herself down and then stopped. Even after she knew her uncle was there, even with so much eagerness throughout her, she knew she wanted to savor the moments. Great lesson for children there.
I liked this more than Julia and the illustrations really aren't any that I'd see any kid getting excited over. Very understated and quiet.

A cute Christmas story of Karin, a young girl who is anxiously waiting for her favorite Uncle to arrive for Christmas. At the last minute, her mother sends her to the market, and even though she is worried she will miss his arrival, she goes. As Karin walks through the city, everywhere she looks, something reminds her of a wonderful memory of her uncle, and makes her even more happy that he will be arriving. By the time she gets home, she sees his truck in the driveway, and then she comes into the house and savors their reunion.

It was a sweet story, and it showed how important family relationships and traditions mean to a child.
