Welcome to the forest. Rumors are spreading about beast origins, and it isn't pretty. Once thought to be evil mythical creatures of folklore, humans turn out to be a real part of beast history, and horrifically, a part of beast beginnings. And this discovery of the truth is all thanks to Gabe, a goblin from Broken Branch Falls. He never set out to change the world, but change it, he has.
Now, Gabe and his girlfriend Ona are headed in opposite directions for Spring Break. Being a logical goblin, Gabe tries to talk her out of it, but there's just no reasoning with a stubborn ogress, and Ona is determined to dig up evidence of humans.
But when Ona goes missing, Gabe and his friends fly to Cradle Rock to search for her and discover a village of trouble, igniting an age old war. Though his physical skills may be lacking, Gabe won't give up. With the help of his friends, he will find a way to save his girl and maybe all beastkind. Humans, bah!
Tara Tyler has had a hand at everything from waitressing to rocket engineering. After living up and down the Eastern US, she now writes and teaches math in Ohio with her three active boys and Coach Husband.
Currently, she has two series, The Cooper Chronicles (techno-thriller detective capers) and Beast World (MG fantasy) She's an adventure writer who believes every good story should have action, a moral, and a few laughs!
It's Spring Break, and goblin Gabe is having a hard time with the fact his ogress girlfriend, Ona is going away to Cradle Rock to search for evidence of humans. Humans have long been extinct, after all. Ona goes missing, and Gabe rushes with his friends to find her. They stumble upon a village and start a war with a sneeze. Can Gabe save not only Ona but all of beastkind?
I fell in love with the world of beasts in the first book of this series, Broken Branch Falls. It has the charm and wonder like the Harry Potter series except the boy trying to figure things out is actually a goblin named Gabe. Gabe is a nerd and klutz, and absolutely lovable. I'm also a huge fan of his girlfriend Ona who is the smartest ogre anyone knows. Each character is colorful and fascinating. Rove is definitely my favorite. The calm and loyal werewolf best friend.
We're whisked away from Broken Branch Falls to the wilds and beyond the Mist. The action doesn't stop, and just when I thought I knew where we were going, a new surprise pops up. This is an incredibly fun MG fantasy book that I can't wait to read with my son when he's a few years older.
This fun-filled adventure takes middle grade readers into a fantasy world packed with action and imagination.
Spring break has arrived, and Gabe's looking forward to hitting the beach with his best friend. Too bad his girlfriend, Ona, is off to Cradle Rock for hiking instead. When she disappears, Gabe and his friends take off to find her and discover much more than they bargained for.
This is the second book in the Beast World series but can be read--without too much difficulty--as a stand alone.
In this series, beasts are the norm. Gabe, a young teenage goblin, is as normal as any goblin could be. He's adventure friendly, pretty bright, sometimes a little self-concious and more courageous than he's willing to admit. His girlfriend is a ogress, and his best friend is a werewolf--all as natural as any teenage friends could be. The author does a terrific job building a world which despite the fantastical attributes, comes across familiar and natural. Still, it's exactly the fantastical quirkiness of the characters which adds just the right amount of fun.
The pages are marked with adventure pure, gliding seamlessly from one escapade into the next. There's tension, action, secrets and surprises. But the friends manage to work their way through, having to come up with solutions when none seem possible. There's also a little, sweet romance built in, exactly that which fits to the age group and will set off a perfect smile, blush or giggle too.
There are many messages weaved into this book, some more obvious than others. Acceptance and the dangers of fearing the unusual are thoughts which come across clearly, while the value of friendship, self-confidence and maintaining hope glide along a little less conspicuously. It's refreshing not only to watch the characters learn these lessons for themselves, but actively work to teach them to others as the characters already live some of these virtues themselves.
Summed up, this is simply a fun read kids are sure to adore. The magical world draws in and lets the imagination take flight, while keeping the reader glued to the pages until the very end. It's a great read for boys and girls ages 9 and up.
I feel in love with the quirky group of characters in the first book where our hero a goblin named Gabe fought to keep his town of various beasts together. Now we are on to book two where did you know humans exist and various beasts are eager to discover them. Spring break is happening and what else do teens do but go out and attempt to have fun and of course havoc happen. A great adventure is to be had between the pages of this unique middle grade series.
A light but fun fantasy story for both teens and adults. A spring break becomes a rescue for a group of young beasts who soon discover humans were not as extinct as they'd been lead to believe. The characters are fun if not a little frustrating sometimes. Would make for a fun Disney story though!
And the fun continues!! This is an action-packed adventure story that keeps you turning the pages. The beast buddies from the 1st book are back and onto new adventures. When Ona, the ogress, gets lost on Spring Break, Gabe (goblin) and Rove (werewolf) head off to the rescue. What they find is a whole lot more than they expect - or want to believe. The adventure takes on a dangerous turn when the beasts meet mythology come to life. This book should appeal to anyone in middle school or older. A fantastic read with heart!!
I didn't get into this as much as I thought I would. Still, I'm thinking 4th grade up will enjoy this tale of mythological beasts. The beasts seem to be a lot like humans (visiting the beach, hiking..).which kids might think is fun Maybe I need to find a copy of the first book to appreciate it. I received a Kindle ARC in exchange for a fair review from Netgalley.
Each slightly longer than the last each book contains some great illustrations and with fairly short chapters make for easy bedtime reading ... though be warned the lure of just another page, another chapter might prove too irresistible. Whilst each can be read as a stand alone read they should ideally be read in order from the beginning if your not wanting to miss out on any of the fun.
A tale of goblins, ogres,, werewolves are all doing whatever it is they as a goblin/ogre/werewolf do; highly enjoyable, funny, full of memorable characters that I found it impossible not to invest in inhabiting a world that is at once fantastical and yet oddly familiar, the messages at the heart of the story a worthy and important one - its impressive the way the author uses characters such as Gabe the goblin and the scenarios in which he and the others find themselves to not only tell a great story but hi-light issues in a way that is appropriate for young readers.
There's a wonderful adventure to be had between the pages of Cradle Rock as the characters go off in search of humans ... a species thought to be extinct.
With all of the features that made the previous book such a joy to read ... oh! and one of the sweetest romances ... if I wasn't already totally enchanted by Gabe and co I am now.

Cradle Rock (Beast World #2) by Tara Tyler is a middle grade fantasy book that has a terrific cover that had me right away. The story is pretty cute too. A clash of worlds in which a human boy is tired of being picked on and takes off. He is spotted by beastly creatures who thought humans were extinct. The merging to the two species doesn't go well in town but...you have to read it to find out what happens. It is a cute story but it lacked a lot of depth to the characters. I didn't find them as developed as I wanted, just kind of skimmed the surface. I didn't find any "click' to any of them. It is a cute story and worth reading. I received a review copy of this book, a review was not required, all opinions are my own.
What a fun, magical and beastly adventure where the main character is a Goblin. Did you know humans are real? This is the second book in the Beast World series. It made me laugh. I really enjoyed reading about all the beasties in the world especially dragons, which have alway been a favorite of mine. A great MG fantasy.
