A compelling presentation of Paul’s theology enriched by insights from the field of Systematic theology. It is BIOGRAPHICAL, THEOLOGICAL, GEOGRAPHICAL, MISSIOLOGICAL, HISTORICAL, HERMENEUTICAL, INSPIRATIONAL!
Dr. Reymond received his B.A., M.Div., and Ph.D. from Bob Jones University. He has in the past taught at BJU, Covenant Seminary, and Knox Theological Seminary, and pastored several different churches. He is currently serving as the organizing pastor for Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church (OPC).
Excellent survey of Paul's life, thought, and contribution to the Christian scriptures. Paul, Missionary Theologian is very well sourced, and Reymond was obviously incredibly well read. The biographical section was super helpful. Reymond gives his best stab at putting together a timeline from Paul's early life, his conversion, his letters, his missionary journeys, his visions, and his death. The stuff on Hebrews was interesting given his minority view on it.
The implications of Paul's missionary zeal for the church today come up often in the book, and I love the way Reymond finishes this tome with a call for missionary action. He writes towards the end of the first section:
"Now you the reader must decide whether you will become a part of the continuing conquest of the gospel. Will you seriously face the demands of the Great Commission and your responsibility to it? Will you make yourself available to the Lord Jesus Christ for cross-cultural ministry? Before you decide to stay at home and involve yourself in some work here, you must first be able to give yourself good reasons why you may stay at home. Cross-cultural ministry, I would submit, should be given first priority in your thinking. Only when the Lord has made it clear that he does not want you to involve yourselves cross-culturally should you then decide to stay at home."
The systematic theology stuff was good. It's interesting seeing what you come up with you if you intentionally reduce yourself to just Paul. Turns, out quite a lot. This stuff is all good refresher if you've read a few works in systematics and/or if you know Paul's letters well. In some ways it's heavier reading than an average work in systematics because he has space to engage with the letters more thoroughly and consider exegetical options.
Reymond occasionally writes with a tone that is more polemical than I think is necessary, and I do think this unfortunately decreases the usability or appeal the book might otherwise have. While I agree with a tonne of the Reymond's perspective, I'm a Baptist, charismatic, non-sabbatarian who doesn't entirely hold to covenant theology or his view of the Mosaic law. I've got pretty thick skin so his tone isn't going to keep me up at night, but I could imagine some readers getting frustrated by some of the ways Reymond makes points.
I'll definitely return to this as a reference book, but it was dope reading it all the way through. A super informative and encouraging read.
Paul's life was marked by hardship and sacrifice in the service of others. The author is exceptionally thorough in his investigation and explanation of this extraordinary man and his journey of faith. Highly recommended!
A great book that taught me so much about Paul the Apostle. It is a huge book and it takes a long time to finish, but it is worth the time. Enjoy this great book and get ready to learn a lot
