Rate this book
A Second-Chance Family

When Buck Armstrong rescues Gina Patterson and her baby from a dark country road outside town, he intends to keep his distance. Gina and little Bobby remind the handsome veteran too much of all he's lost. The vulnerable single mom seems equally wary of getting involved. But things change once Gina and her son settle into his sister's boardinghouse. Being with Gina and Bobby makes Buck question his plans to leave town for a fresh start. Suddenly he has dreams of forging a new family, even though it will mean risking his heart. But can he escape his past for a chance at a happy future?

When Gina arrived in Rescue River with Bobby her life changed. When she meets Buck she never expects to find someone special like him. The characters in this book are all very special people. You will feel God working throughout this whole book. This book deserves a higher rating than a five star review. You won't be able to stop reading this book.

2.5 stars. It was kind of cute but it was one of those books that everything fell into place too nicely. I did appreciate the fact that the author did not make one of the characters fall back into old habits. The premise reminded me a lot of Her Hometown Hero by Arlene James so if you enjoyed that book you'll probably enjoy this one.

Buck Armstrong is a recovering alcoholic and a vet who is home after serving his country. Buck funds himself back in his hometown of Rescue River, Ohio. He is currently living with his sister Lacey. He is helping her fix up a house so that she can rent out the rooms and have a b and b. Buck is also trying to make amends of when he was drinking real bad. He also helps out a local veterinarian . One night he is coming home from helping the vet when he spots a woman and her baby in the middle of the road. Who is this woman and why is she in the middle of the road at night? Buck doesn't know what to really do so he offers to aid the woman anyway he can. Gina Patterson and her infant son Bobby are on the run from California. . She runs out of gas and finds herself in a little town called Rescue River. She is walking down the road looking for help when a man named Buck finds her. She is scared but for some reason she allows him to help her. He takes her to his sisters Lacey' s house hoping Lacey will allow Gina to stay the night. Will Lacey allow her to stay? Will Buck and his sister find out the real reason why Gina's is running? Rescue River has secrets of its own . Will Buck and Gina figure out those secrets? This is a really good read and I enjoyed it . There is a mystery element to this story. Gina is hiding something but what is it and why? Buck is looking for redemption and healing. Spoiler **** Buck lost his wife and baby daughter and is trying to come to terms with that as well. I enjoyed watching Gina grow and finding a purpose . I liked the mystery about the diary and really liked reading about the underground railroad.

The Soldier And The Single Mom is a Rescue River series by Lee Tobin McClain. Buck Armstrong is a veteran, had a wife and child who died in a car crash, and Buck is a recovering alcoholic who goes to AA meeting. Buck lives with his sister who also has a bad history. Into town "walks" Gina Patterson and her baby boy Bobby. It is hard for Buck and his sister to see a woman and a child but they do let them stay with them for a few days. Gina is running from a past also. Her husband was into drugs and killed himself skiing. Her husbands parents want the baby, Bobby. But they are abusive to Bobby. Now they are trying to get custody of Bobby. Trust. A little history of the underground railroad in book. A good read.

I liked this novel. The plot and main characters were well-developed. More background information about Gina and Lacey would have been helpful in preparing the reader for some of the events. For instance, we learn later in the novel that Gina had a degree in marketing which helps her develop brochures for the historic home she is helping Buck and Lacey prepare for the public opening. This is an inspiring story about two people who are trying to get their lives straightened out after dealing with some challenging and disheartening events in their lives.

I really enjoyed this return trip to Rescue River. I was hooked from the beginning when Buck found Gina and Bobby walking on the road. I enjoyed the part about the Underground Railroad and Miss Minnie's family history. The author, Lee Tobin McClain, did a great job researching and presenting this part of the story. I'm glad Lacey will get a chance to find love in the next book. The characters are all well developed and so well described that I could imagine them being real. It was easy to like the characters and the emotional atmosphere in the book. Great story!
