4.5 - She who must be obeyed... Stars!

The second book in Lauren Smith’s Sins & Scandals series brings us Owen Hadley’s story. If you have read A Gentleman Never Surrenders predecessor, you will know just how desperate our Hero is for a wealthy wife.

But as you get to know him more in this book, which incidentally starts off a week on from the end of An Earl by Any Other Name, you start to understand that his reasonings for needing the money are not as mercenary as you initially assume.

Pleasantly surprised

I know it’s a bit mean to say that you’re pleasantly surprised when you enjoy a book, but it’s true. I didn’t particularly enjoy the first book. There was also the wee problem that I had “met” the hero and heroine for A Gentleman Never Surrenders, and found them rather lacking. I received both books via NetGalley and after reading the first book was a little wary of how I would go with the second. I side-eyed A Gentleman Never Surrenders each time I passed it on my Kindle car

Couldn't help but think Owen was some sort of a fortune seeking dirt-bag at first, but as I got to know his reasons, I couldn't help but soften towards this man. Owen wanted a marriage of love no matter the crappy start, so I admired his efforts. Loved Milly soooo much! She was a sweetheart despite her initial goals and dreams being dashed (in her mind, only at first) by Owen's ruining. The physical part was no problem for these two and very hot, but the emotional bonds took a while to build, an ...more

'A Gentleman Never Surrenders' by Lauren Smith is Book Two in The "Sins and Scandals" series. This is the story of Owen Hadley and Mildred 'Milly' Pepperwirth. I have read the previous book "An Earl by Any Other Name" but feel this can easily be a standalone book.
Owen has been away fighting a war but is now back finding that his Cotswold Estate and other things are in dire need of his attention. But more importantly he needs the money to bring everything up to date and to do so quickly he think

If you read An Earl by Any Other Name, the first book in the Sins and Scandals series, you'll remember Owen Hadley, he is trying to find a wife to help restore his family home to it's former glory.

Lauren Smith is my go to author for Historical Romances for many reasons, because, as she proves yet again with this wonderful story, she has a gift for transporting you back in time and making you feel as if you are really there. This has been a fun series to read and I look forward to the next book

Ok, I'm not sure how much (or little) I liked this story. This first part I REALLY didn't like.

Owen had been to war and when he got back his property had gone to hell so he needed to marry someone with a huge dowry, (like we haven’t all read that story before.) Owen was either 30 or 32 and decided to go to a house party of a friend and sneak into Milly’s sister Rowena’s bedroom, Rowena just turned 18, in order to compromise her so he would have to marry her. Unfortunately, he entered the wrong

I didn’t like the “strong” heroine that was way to insecure if you ask me- and a tad too whiney for my taste
Quite pleasant story line , but honestly I felt like, this was an okay book. Not horrible -except for my dislike of the heroine- but also not awe inspiring or surprising ..
quick read, quite sweet -as I said okay

Great characters with compelling stories populate this delightfully entertaining series of novellas by Lauren Smith. I highly recommend reading the series in order, but you can certainly read this as a stand-alone. In the first book, we met Leopold Graham, Lord Hampton who needed to marry for money. It was his intention to propose to Millie, the daughter of a very rich Viscount while she was attending his house party. But then – love got in th

Some of my favorite romances have the most disastrous beginnings. The more the characters dislike one another at the start, the more rewarding the story is at the end. I love seeing them rattle each other’s cages, yet their hostility doesn’t prevent them from being wildly attracted to each other. There’s just something about the banter, that repressed sexual tension that’s just delicious. That’s what makes A Gentleman Never Surrenders, #2 in Lauren Smith’s Sins and Scandals series, so wonderful ...more

Sins and Scandals Book 2

A Gentleman who inherits a bankrupt estate has only one choice, he must marry an heiress. A young lady with a large dowry knows that she is only being pursued by fortune hunters. This is the story of a man who has tried to court young ladies honorably, but his reputation precedes him and no heiress will have anything to do with him. Owen Hadley doesn't have a choice anymore, he will have to compromise an heiress and get caught to save his beloved home.

I'll be the first to say, I wasn't sure what to expect with Owen as the hero in this novel. He didn't leave the greatest impression on me once I finished An Earl by Any Other Name for obvious reasons. But if anyone could get me to fall in love with an unlikely hero, Lauren Smith is that author.

And she definitely succeeds!

A Gentleman Never Surrenders is the second book in the Sins and Scandals series by Lauren Smith. You don't need to read the first book before this one in order, but as some of the characters are mentioned in both books, it's nice to read more about them before you get to this book.

Owen Hadley is in desperate need of a rich wife. He's tried the normal route of wooing women, but knowing that he is in dire straits isn't something women find attractive. When he hears that there is a lovely young wom

Wow Milly starts the book off very cold and standoffish. As you get into the story she is seen as wanting romance, respect and love. You see how she wants her husband to be an equal partner and want her to work with her and not dictate. She is really caring and sweet. Super smart and independent.

When Owen first comes into the picture he is desperate for a wife who has money. But he doesn’t want to dominate the person. He isn’t after the money just for greed. It is because of his passion for his

This was my first book by this author and I originally requested it because the blurb caught my interest and I've heard a lot of really positive things from blogger friends! I'm so glad I did because it was fun and entertaining read. I generally don't read historical fiction but I really enjoyed the setting of this story. It was so much fun falling to the lives of these characters.

Okay, so I loved Owen and Milly so much. At first, I was kinda off put by the method that Owen was using to find a

I just love historical romances and this one is not an exception. It is a great and sweet read. Well written and well researched.
I like the main characters a lot. They are a cute couple. There is passion and chemistry from the first moment they meet but if they dare to give themselves to each other is the question.
I like the story line but would have loved there was a bit more to the story. Owen is a roque but develops and gets to be a great husband. The story is fast paced sometimes and it most

Lauren Smith has a gift for taking the misfortunes of social class from long ago and making them relevant, as she turns on the charm with her wise words and humorous spirit. A Gentleman Never Surrenders is a breath of fresh air. A little more scandal, a bit less danger and a whole lot of heart. Owen and Milly are more than just a scandal, they are a sensation.
I liked the characters and the HEA. It was a good story, but a little out of my historical range that I like to read (1911). 3.5☆ (rounded up)

Lauren Smith's rocking the "Downton Abbey" era Historical Romance genre with "A Gentleman Never Surrenders" being an absolute winner. "A Gentleman Never Surrenders" is the second installment of the Sins and Scandals series. This series is focusing on Wife Hunting heroes be they in need of a wealthy bride or just a bride. Sins and Scandals features extremely strong, independent heroines most interested in the British Suffragette movement. This novel focuses on Owen Hadley, who returned from the w ...more

Owen tries to lend a hand to his woman, "he gazed down at her. “Do your feet still hurt?” Her hesitation told him everything he needed to know. “I’m trying to help you, sweetheart. Don’t be so bloody stubborn.” No matter where they are Owen loves to shower his lady with affection, “come on, we can find a way to occupy ourselves while we wait for Jack.” He nuzzled her cheek and stole a lingering kiss." I loved this book, Owen was so attentive and sweet.

Owen seems a bit of a cad in the opening chapter as he coolly contemplates what innocent young lady's reputation he can compromise in order to gain access to her dowry and save his estate, but we soon learn that he is not as bad as he initially seems. While Owen was off fighting a war, his family's estate and his beloved childhood home fell into a state of disrepair after his father's death. Now he must find a way to save the place that holds so many wonderful memories for him and

After reading An Earl By Any Other Name I was super excited to read the next story. When found out the next story was about Owen, I couldn't wait. I mean Owen did something extremely stupid in the first book, and he kind of deserved what he got. I mean desperate times call for desperate measure. Anyway, when I read the blurb I was like who's Milly. Still super excited, then I started reading I was like, "Oh it's her". Yes, I wasn't too sure about the heroine. If you rea

I've come to enjoy Lauren Smith's historicals more for some reason. Book one of this series was pretty likable. After Owen's plans were thwarted by Leo he was down. This had a similar vibe that it was a marriage of convenience of sorts. Even love hate opposite attracts vibe too. I wanted to see how it'd play out.

I wasn't sure how I felt towards Owen after the first book really on one hand I felt bad for him since he needed a wife for his estate too also he helped along the other relationship for

It's no secret how much I love historical romance stories.  This one was a new author to me so I was very interested in reading this.  I did not read the first book in this series, and was able to follow along the storyline just fine - so this can be read as a standalone.

When the book starts we are introduced to Owen Hadley, a man in desperate need of a rich wife.  His house & estate are in need of attention and care but he does not have the funds to fix it up.  He is aware that it is unli

Lauren Smith is an insta-buy author for me...and with good reason! Lauren is a master story-teller, capturing your imagination and your heart with each of her characters.

A Gentleman Never Surrenders is a great read for fans of Titanic and Downton Abbey, as it takes place in 1912. Lauren expertly weaves the details of the time period into the every day goings-on of her characters; politics, money, society rules, and the preservation of family legacy all play a part in this series.

A Gentleman Never Surrenders is book two in The Sins & Scandals series but does stand alone. Lauren has included enough back story on both characters that you don’t feel as if you’ve missed anything if you do read them out of order.

We meet up with Owen Hadley not long after the Graham’s dinner party from An Earl by Any Other Name. He’s brooding (because men don’t pout *snort*) because he narrowly missed out on catching a rich wife. He believes he needs to marry an heiress in order to restore
