Every time I meet an Albertan writer, they mention their debt to Kroetsch. Although this is only 105 pages of a fairly large body of work, it made for a wonderful intro to Kroetsch, and was strong enough, even, for me to allow him into my personal pantheon of Great Writers on its strength. Superficially, this work recalls Pale Fire, but it is ultimately very different. Regardless, it is a fascinating concept and supremely well-written. Robert Kroetsch was a Canadian novelist, poet, and non-fiction writer. He taught for many years at the University of Manitoba. Kroetsch spent multiple years in Vancouver, British Columbia before returning to Winnipeg where he continued to write. In 2004 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
