The dragons are back, and they're our last chance...

Isaac Morningstar III, or Zach to the few who know him, has hit rock bottom. Once an immortal, nearly-invincible dragon, he's been awakened only to have his powers and his treasure locked away until he can prove himself to be a trustworthy protector of humans. Since Zach has never liked humans, he's pretty sure he's going to end up back on ice. That is, until he meets sweet, curvy Erin, a human hairdresser who might just turn his world upside down.

Erin has a pretty routine life, but that ends when a tall, gorgeous man appears out of nowhere, claiming to be an ancient dragon with immeasurable power who wants her as his mate. She doesn't know whether to laugh or run for the hills. But when the mysterious stranger saves her life and needs her help she can't just turn away.  Still, the closer she gets to Zach, the more she realizes there may just be something truly magical about him.

But as the forces around them close in, Zach is quickly realizing that the darkness lurking inside him may be greater than he anticipated. And the beast within may not be the only thing they have need to fear.

Warning: contains ferocious dragons, fearsome fights, fiery love scenes and a fiercely cute three-legged kitten that will steal your heart. The first in a brand new series with dragons unlike anything Terry has written!

This series would've been really good if it didn't so much focus on the automatic 'I SAW YOU AND INSTANTLY HAVE TO STALK AND MATE MATE MATE!!! You're my mate and I'm a gemstone dragon from the middle ages.' I went to sleep because I hate humans (mind you from 100+ years ago) and I want nothing to do with this cruel and horrible new world. Oh woe is meeee! Oh oh oh! I also have treasure! 'DON'T FORGET THE MOUNTAIN OF TREASURE THAT I HOARDED!!!!

Look at me! I'm a collared massive ONYX dragon.

Ahem. I mean auto insta-lurv within the first couple of chapters.

I like the dragon shifters and the plot behinnnnnnd the smutty-ness. Which is why I picked this up in the first place since I would love me some dragon shifter being my mate ASAFP! I like the dominance in this series... *swoon*

But it is what it is and I read all three of them this weekend anyways.

3.5-4 stars

This was a pretty good story. I liked Erin and Zach and enjoyed their story very much. This is the first story I've read by this author and I liked it well enough that I'll probably be trying more of her work in the future.

Erin is a hairstylist and the manager of a salon. She lives in a rather bad area of town and the salon gets robbed occasionally but Erin doesn't want to move because she has friends in the area. Erin is a kind-hearted person and goes out of her way to help others.

Zach is an ancient dragon born from an Onyx egg. The older dragons had more power than the newer version of dragons (see the author's "Dragons of New York" series) but they went to sleep centuries ago and then were put into a cryo sleep (all of which isn't completely explained but we get the general idea). Zach is awakened from his sleep by an Oracle that has the power to control dragons. She worried that he wasn't friendly enough to humans so she collared him (preventing him from using his dragon powers) until he can prove that he'll be good to humans.

Once Zach is collared, he's sent to New York with no money and only the cloths on his back. He walks all day and ends up outside a hair salon. He sees a woman inside doing stuff to a man's hair and is curious. He walks in and sits in the waiting area so he can observe the humans but he's rather bedraggled from being out in the rain so the people in the salon think he's a homeless person. The woman he observed, Erin, came over to see if he needed help but Zach is a dragon and (not realizing he seemed like someone that needed to be pitied) takes a bit of offense at the idea that he'd need help. He does find himself drawn to Erin though and seeks a reason to be close to her.

Erin thinks that Zach is rather strange, seeming to be a cross between massively arrogant and crazy. She's not sure how to handle him but when trouble comes into the salon and Zach comes to her rescue, she knows she has to help him. There is a major attraction between Zach and Erin but with the way they're thrown together leaves both of them with reservations. Also, there's a lot about humans and this new world that Zach doesn't know about or doesn't understand completely so even when he starts feeling like Erin is his mate, he's unsure about how to handle things and if he can be good for her once his dragon is released. There's a bit of angst as things are worked out but the story does end with Zach and Erin happy together and heading towards a HEA.

This was an enjoyable story. Erin was a very good heroine and I Liked her a lot. Zach was annoyingly arrogant in the beginning but that soon faded and then it was much easier to like him. Also, he fell for a 3-legged kitten! Who could not like a hero with a soft spot for a 3-legged kitten?!?! The story was short but not in a bad way...while I wouldn't have minded it being longer, it didn't feel like anything was missing at the end. The story was very good and I liked the characters so I'd recommend this story. :)

* note - I listened to the audio version of this book and the narrator did a fine job.

I really enjoyed this "Onyx Dragon!" Isaac Morningstar III aka Zach (gem dragon) and Erin (beautician/ manager) were a memorable couple with their three-legged kitten, Bo and the enigmatic oracle who collared Zach with partial dragon powers until he learned to understand and adjust to the ways of humans.

On to the next in the series, the "Sapphire Dragon"

For my first dragon shifter book, I was left a little bored. It's usually the same format for all first installments in books like this, so I tend to take that with a grain of salt. But y'all bored, until we met some characters from a previous series that I was unaware of, if I were to reach for this author again, I'd try the other dragon series.

I found a lot of this world building under developed, but again, this was a continuation in already existing world. It stands alone just fine, but again, bored. I'm not mad at it, I read it in an afternoon and it kept me entertained.

So...this was kinda dumb. I'm willing to give it 2 stars because you get pretty much what you expect out of the book (love story between alpha dragon and sweet, bland heroine), but I wouldn't say it's especially engrossing or well developed.

Our hero, Zach, is full of inconsistencies. Supposedly he went into hibernation thousands of years ago and doesn't understand the modern world, to the point where he doesn't recognize why Erin touches people's hair (she's a hair dresser) or know what a date is. Yet he uses words like "lame" and jokes that "humans suck".

Zach is also about as smart as a bag of rocks. He apparently is not aware of where babies come from, dragon or otherwise. He doesn't seem to be a virgin, yet the concept of birth control is totally foreign to him when they finally have sex, even if we're just talking about something as basic as pulling out here. At the end of the book, another character informs him that dragons can only have babies at certain times of the year. Again, shouldn't Zach already know that? Did he just go around screwing women previously NOT KNOWING if it could lead to babies?

I picked this book because it was the first in a series and, while it's connected to the other books by this author, I thought it would give a basic explanation of Shifters in this world. I was wrong. Very little is explained, including why someone called the Oracle woke Zach up from his hibernation in the first place or even gives a shit about him.

The romance, meanwhile, is pretty underdeveloped. Erin, our heroine, is totally forgettable. Zach, of course, must boss her around immediately for her own good. She also basically orgasms whenever he touches her. The sex scenes made me laugh. But hey, there's no real OM/OW drama, the couple is totally loyal to each other, and if the hero's lack of knowledge about babies is anything to go by, he maybe wasn't a womanizer in his old life. 2 stars it is.

Safety Stats:More or less. Couple is officially mated at the end.

Zach, the first of the Gem Dragons to be awakened and is not happy about it. Angry, dissatisfied with his being and does not want to comply with the Oracle's wishes that he learn how to care for humanity. Humans were something he despised, until he met Erin and the sparks start to fly. Good story, fun read, hot sexy characters.

Dear diary, All humans still suck. The end. 5 PRECIOUS GEMS

I assure you,” he said sardonically, “nothing here can hurt me.” He eyed her. “You, on the other hand, you’re squishy. Anything can hurt you.” I am ROARING! ABSOLUTELY ROARING!! Terry is in top hilarity form with this one! Just barely started the story and I already had tears of laughter!! I LOVE Zach's "holier than thou" attitude towards us mere Humans!! "The oracle had said she’d remove the collar when she felt she could trust him with humans. He had no idea what that meant, but probably it meant hating them a little less." You can just see where this is headed...and I for one am thoroughly enjoying the ride! In fact there are so many hilarious lines from him that I would love to share, but I would end up repeating most of the story! It's truly humorous! But don't worry because there is a lot more to this story than the humor! As there is with EVERY Terry story!! It's upbeat while having a hint of a dark undertone to it that not only adds layers of depth & enrichment to the story, but enhances the reading experience as well! This is so well written with intriguing storylines, concepts & plots that have the story flowing so smoothly, I couldn't stop reading if I tried! No matter that I was super tired from hardly sleeping this past 24 hours, as soon as I opened it up I was completely enthralled, captivated & mesmerized with Zach, Erin & the adventure they were having to the point that I FORGOT I WAS TIRED!!!! The characters are multifaceted, to the point that its IMCLAWSSIBLE to believe that Zach is NOT a real, live person! His way of thinking, speaking & behaving, his logic, is UPROARIOUSLY funny and adds so much to make him an exceptionally well-rounded character! Of course Erin is no different... well actually she is about as different from Zach that a human-hating, "fictional", delusional dragon shifter and soft-hearted, kind, giving human could be! Or as Zach says - The only thing you need to know is dragons are the best and most powerful. And I’m the best dragon. And at the shelter? I almost peed myself!! Terry is one FIRENOMENALLY talented author with a genuine gift for crafting beautiful, enthralling captivating SHIFTACULAR stories time and time again! In fact, every book has been a "can't put down until I'm finished" kind of book!! Both Terry and her books are rare gems, a true treasure to be cherished by everyone, even though it goes against every Dragon's belief!! After all, doesn't every Dragon hide their treasure hoard, ensuring no one else can have it? Terry has created another DRAGONTASTIC book & series and I CANNOT wait for more!!!

Onyx Dragon (Awakened Dragons Book#1)

Terry Bolryder

All I can say is WOW! Loved the Terry’s Tigers books and really loved the Double Dragons series. This is first of a brand new series that spins off of them.

Isaac Morningstar III, Zach, had just woke up after a long winters nap so to speak. The Oracle had shackled him in this collar thing, he could not fly or have access to full dragon powers, could only partially shift and he was one frustrated dude! How was he supposed to live and function, he was a DRAGON with a treasure and he was used to fighting, knocking others and dragons around, you know…..doing dragon stuff! The Oracle had told him he needed to learn to “like” Humans, trust them…only then would she think about taking the collar off. Really? Humans, COME on!!!

Enter one fragile human female hairdresser, red/brown hair, smiling, kind, soft blue eyes and Zach was not sure what happened. He wanted her touching HIM like she had done to other males, hands in HIS hair, her warmth comforting HIM. Erin confounded him, and she just smiled, hummed a tune, and treated him no different than anyone else. Zach was not sure what had occurred but he had just found his mate!

Now Im not going to give away the entire story, you will just have to get a copy to see what really goes on. I will tell you there is a sweet, 3 legged kitten that steals hearts, named Bo that has a BIG part. Erin and Zach struggle with their growing attraction, lust and desire. You run into Double Dragons, Ran and Draven, with mate Melissa who help Zach and Erin see what really matters. Now that you have an idea what takes place it’s time to get your OWN copy, settle down and read it yourself! You’ll be so glad you did!

Got the book yesterday late evening and it did not disappoint me in the least...We come across old friends from the New York Dragon series in this book. I like it when we intermix, don't you? In this series we meet an Old Breed of Dragon who came out of his sleep and has to learn to live with humanity, which he doesn't really like, and what does he get himself into while doing this? You gotta read it to find out :-) Off to Sapphire dragon adventures today :-)

I must admit I was quite surprised by this. I wasn't a fan of her last dragon series. I had my doubts going into this but I was surprised. I found myself staying up instead of sleeping to see how it would play out. I rather enjoyed this and can't wait for Sapphire's story.

Somewhat dumb but not totally dumb..

Well, mostly this was a semi-decent story. Except when Emerald/Aegis kidnapped Zack and Erin’s kitten. Good grief, you’d have thought the evil dragon had kidnapped their child. Their reaction and what was said to evil-dragon was totally stupid. Jen was watching the kitten and when Erin went to pick it up she answered the door she was glassy eyed and a real mess. Needless to say, Erin was upset because Jen didn't protect the kitten, not really giving the reader the impression she gave a damn about what Jen went through. Dumb, dumb, dumb. And when evil-dragon was chasing Erin through the forest with the kitten in a bag... It's not even worth telling you about.

How old is this author, anyway? Zack unfastening Erin’s “brassiere!” was the only other really ridiculous thing about the book.

Overall, it was a little interesting, now and then, story about a dragon that had been asleep in cryo for a very long time, put there by a powerful witch known as the Oracle, who brought Zack out and put a ring around his neck to stop him from using any of his dragon powers while he learned to cope with humans, and eat them. The first person he met was kind-hearted Erin and he knew immediately that she was his mate. And, of course, he left her because he didn’t think he was good enough for her.

There was 3 explicit sex scenes in this book and the F-bomb was used 1 time.

If any more of these books make it to audible I might continue listening to it.

As to the narration: Tanya Eby is one of my favorite narrators. Great voices and terrific emotions.

Nothing special.
Very insta-insta but it wasn't bad.

That actually means a lot you guys, don't roll your eyes.

Here's the thing, I could really see the potential in Ms.Bolryder's writing through this. I mean, I like insta and all but it has to be a real good insta to not make me roll my eyes and so, well picture this, majority of the book I was huffing and puffing like the dragon in these books are bound to at some point and there's a right chance the ceilings going to fall on me cause of all the eyes I've been making at it.

So if this were longer, a little more stretched, if our h could have out a little longer maybe? the plot-I'm pretty sure there's one in the sidelines-explored to at least half its strengths? This would have been a real fun read. I really wanna actually get to know the characters, have a little heart-to-heart, find out what makes them tick, hole up in their heads all cozy like... I am not some creepy stalker :P

Anyway 2.75 stars and a promise to read the next book.

Dragon, Isaac Morningstar III or Zach, is released from a deep sleep but has his powers locked away by the oracle until he can prove that he'll protect humans. While he's walking around he comes across a beauty salon where he's entranced by Erin as she's cutting someone's hair and he believes that she's his mate.

Life throws some curves Erin's way after Zach enters her life but he takes care of them. When Erin decides to go to the shelter to adopt a cat, Zach finds a 3 legged, black kitten and develops an immediate bond with him.

When 10 wolf shifters attack Erin and Zach he takes them down then has to report the issue to the oracle and the local dragons. After the feeling he had while taking out the wolves and meeting the local dragons, Zach begins to doubt himself but wants to keep Erin safe so he leaves to ask the oracle to put him back to sleep.

This is a great story and I recommend it to those who love paranormal romance, dragons and/or shifters. However, it is definitely an adult book in my opinion and not for the young adult.

Onyx Dragon Onyx Dragon (Awakened Dragons Book 1) by Terry Bolryder.
4 out of 5 stars.
The original dragons that used to rule the world were called "Gem" dragons. Most of them were spiteful and vicious; they had no kindness or compassion for others. When humanity no longer needed them, they just faded away and were placed into a cryo freeze saving them for a time when their particular skills and abilities would once more be useful.
But first, these dragons have to learn compassion for humanity and to protect it! To help them do this, The Oracle collars them with unbreakable chains so that they cannot shift into their dragon form and sends them out into the world with nothing on their backs but the clothes they wear, no money, no access to all their treasure, nothing!
Their situation humbles them into having an affinity with even the poorest of creatures, giving them an understanding of why they behave the way they do? Will they be able to sacrifice themselves for the sake of humanity and put human welfare before their own? If they can't, then they risk being sent back to sleep in the cryo freeze again by The Oracle!
Issac (Zach) Morningstar III is one of the original Gem dragons. He was the first to have been awoken from sleep a few months ago and isn't having the best time of it. The Oracle deposited him in a bad part of New York without any money to his name and just the clothes on his back. He is cold, homeless and hungry. Despite his arrogant attitude, he looks just like a tramp!
But then, through a shop window, he spots Erin. She's a hairdresser, and just the sight of her running her fingers through a male clients hair is enough to start his inner dragon tingling. He goes into her shop on the pretext of just getting in out of the rain, but she's kind enough to give him a wash and shave for free too.
When he realises she's his mate, he sticks to her like glue and over the next few days, she teaches him all about what it means to be human as they experience hidden dangers, pleasure, fun, trust, compassion and, most importantly of all, protection instincts and love towards another together.
But then comes an unexpected threat, someone has let more of the Gem Dragons out of cryo-freeze! And this time, it's not The Oracle doing it with good intentions to protect the world. Whoever did this only wants world domination and chaos. To make it worse, one of the Dragons then finds Zach's mate, but Zach isn't there! Will Erin survive her first real run in with a dragon? Can Zach make it back in time to save her? Just who is letting the dragons out of cryo-freeze? And who is the mysterious stranger at the door? You can find out some of the answers in the first of this Awakened Dragons series, along with even more in the next book Sapphire Dragon.Sapphire Dragon
I recommend this book to all that like fantasy, especially shifters and dragons. It is a very enjoyable read and I'm going to be reading the next book straight away!

Onyx Dragon (Awakened Dragons, #1) by Terry Bolryder is a Paranormal Romance.
True rating is 3.75 stars.
There is some great snarky humor.
The romance area was pretty good.
I liked both Erin and Isaac (Zach).
There are some editing errors, but not many.
The writing flows relatively smoothly. So it is a quick and easy read, although there was one area that tended to lag.
My main problem with the story is it didn't go far enough. There was a lot of room for some great action/adventure and suspense. Unfortunately, every time the tension built up, for some reason the author rushed through it.
I really liked it, but did not fall in love with it.
For the most part the story was good and a lot of fun to read.

Gem Dragons

Characters background needed to be fleshed out.
I found Zach was fierce, funny, and likeable. Erin was also nice and was refreshing change from the usual heroines.
I could not understand their actions after the big fight. They just turned their backs from bad guy after he tried to kill them, he escapes, and Zach states, "Oh he'll be back". What!

Overall an OK start to the gem dragon series .

Erin and Zack Yum

I really enjoyed the Onyx Dragon. Of course I have always loved Dragon Shifter stories. Terry Bolryder wrote a wonderful story of love, friendship, and compassion. I really recommend this series especially if you like to read about shifters who have linebacker bodies and beautiful eyes. The love will definitely make your heart swoon and the fighting will get you to cheer and want the book boyfriend for life

I received this book free in exchange for an honest review. Ms. Bolryder has out done herself. Zack is an ancient dragon,he hates humanity. But he meets Erin a human with a heart of gold. Will she be able to change Zack,or will his darkness and other evils destroy what they could have. Thank you Terry you have most definitely surpassed yourself. Look forward to next book.

Good read

A great new spin on the dragons. I loved seeing Melissa and her dragons.. And baby Rin. The tie in between all these series is great. I've accidentally managed to read most of them in the correct order. Ha!

Well written, sweet and sexy. Can't wait to see what's next.

After hundreds of years in cryo sleep, Zach is awakened by an oracle in hopes he will adapt to the new world and help protect the human world from an impending threat that is brought into more light later in the series. Upon awakening, his power and wealth are both sealed by the oracle until she feels he can be trusted among humans. Zach, like the other gem dragons of his kind, doesn't care for humans until he meets his mate Erin.

Their relationship grows quickly, probably given this book can be considered a stand alone as it is the only installment solely based on Zach and Erin's story. The base story plot continues in the rest of the books but shifts to the pov's of other gem dragons's story in each book, and the characters from each book do make appearances along the story line in the other books.

This was a quick read, I finished it in about 4 hours. Although I enjoyed this book, it seems to have a fairly basic plot and not much character depth, building or growth. Having been frozen in cryo for hundreds of years, I expected Zach to struggle more in the modern world, yet he seemed to simply fit right in mere days after being awakened. And being a human with no prior knowledge of supernatural beings before, although Erin does think about the incredibility of it from time to time, she effortlessly accepts it. That gave me the impression of lack of depth and slight rush through the book.

If your looking for a basic, quick read without a complex plot and some steamy sex scenes; this is a good selection. If this is your style, continuing with the rest of the series is recommended. Since the base plot is set in motion from Onyx, there's no need to delve into a completely different plot just to get your next steamy love story fix. The story progresses in each book but from a point of view of a different dragon and his future mate. And from what I've seen, there are also spin off books and several that are reverse harem as well.

Got the huge boxset on sale on Amazon. I haven't read the previous dragon series, so starting this one was kind of confusing. It was hard for me to really get into and care about the stakes in this one, since I'm not familiar with the world.

Zach was the more interesting of the two protagonists and we could really see him change throughout the book. Though the author tried really hard to make him be an alpha dragon, I wasn't feeling it. And some of the "fights" in the book seemed forced. Like I said, the stakes didn't feel that high to me in the book since I didn't read the previous books and this book kind of skipped over how the world works, or what protecting humanity entailed or why the dragons were needed.

Erin was just OK. Nothing interesting about her. She only had one character trait, and that was caring for other people. The two of them fell in love way too quickly, after less than a week. The declaration of love lacked feeling. It was like, "Oh, I guess I love you too." What? Come on. Say it with a bit more conviction!

The reason I give it 3 stars is near the end I did find myself caring about the series in general. And there were a few places that made me smile. But overall, it lacked any oomph that made me really care about the characters or the love story between them.

I love this series.

This is one of Ms. Bolryder's Dragon novels and she being the Queen of Dragon Romance you are guaranteed a great read.
The Awakened Dragons follow the Double Dragon series. I personally recommend reading the first then following up with these but it isn't required to enjoy these books. All are stand alone and well worth the time to read. Also since these are part of the Kindle Unlimited ( as are all of Terry Bolryder's novels ) anyone with this subscription gets to read them free. Since Ms. Bolryder is a prolific writer with dozens of books to her credit Kindle Unlimited allows one to enjoy them all. Since I can finish a novel a day this works great for me and saves me a lot of money.
If you enjoy paranormal romance then check this writer out. You will be happy you did. She writes in a way that can be hot without sliding into porn, her H's are totally alpha and the h's sweet yet strong and every book has a happy ending.
Sweet little escapes !

Although I found this book to be an average read it did manage to make me want to move right into book 2. To me this is a sign of a good book. It wasn't without some issues. No background on Erin. The setting could have been anywhere, the romance was completely reliant on the fated mate trope with no major epiphany moments,
and it glossed over where Zach's treasure has been kept while he slept or even how much or what it was (other than he mentioned there were jewels) . His ring is a major factor in the story but I felt it's significance was also glossed over.

Despite all these things the book was interesting, had funny moments, some spicy sex, and introduced an interesting M/F/M relationship that appears to be the focal of another series where 2 dragon shifters mate with one woman.

So yes 100% I'll read more in this series. It's also offered on KU... if you already pay for this service you have nothing but a little bit of time to lose.
