Skin Book 1

I love Dale Mayer's books and I've been catching up on her very different series. I purchased this box set on sale from the author's website. I am reviewing the books individually as I read them.

Dr Jenna Komack's workshops are renowned being unconventional and successful. What Tania and Kane didn't realize was just how different this week long seminar would be.

Assigned a project, one where Tania would be photographing Kane, neither of them could figure out how it could possibly help them with their problems.

I loved when Kane nicknamed Tania 'Tinkerbelle' as a nod to their size differences and her innocent bearing.

They are also dealing with two very different issues. Kane is there for his anger that is bleeding into his job performance, while Tania is there due to a traumatic incident in her past that has colored her entire world since it occurred.

I love this journey as each little bit is revealed and dealt with. True understanding comes with a simmer to sizzle romance that is healing for both of them.

Scars Book 2

Dr. Jenna Komack does some very unique workshops with select patients. The goal is for each of them to make a breakthrough while paired as a team on a project devised specifically for each team.

This book runs in tandem with the previous book and that's where we first met Robin. Although she would have rather been paired with her friend Tania, Jenna had other ideas.

Sean is there having been encouraged by his sister Paris. They both have problems stemming from the same event in their lives. Jenna didn't feel Paris was quite ready for the seminar, however when Sean applied he fit the bill.

Robin has always hidden her scars, she's refused any more surgeries wanting to just get on with her life. She was done with the pain and recovery required there.

Seth on the other hand has his own internal demons, and while he's checking this out for his sister he also hopes to come to terms with his own anger.

Their assignment is to visit with children at the Children's Hospital here, and Robin is more than a little panicked over that. Her scars scare children.

What seems slow and painful progress also has Sean and Robin beginning a relationship. I truly loved the way this seminar helps them to work their way through the things holding them back.

I'm glad I have the bundle so I can just move right into Paris' experience with this type of seminar.

Scales: Of Justice Book 3

In the previous book 'Scars' we met Sean, Paris' brother. Paris wasn't accepted to that session, because Dr. Jenna Komak said she wasn't ready yet. Now it's her turn, she's eager, a bit anxious and is trying not to attract attention.

Weaver doesn't think he needs the seminar, so Jenna's challenged him. Since he thinks he's immune she wants him to write a paper on it and if at the end he still feels immune she'll help him get it published. It's one of the things on his bucket list, a challenge he's determined to meet.

The addition of a question to their 'homework' brings back all of Paris' fears as she wrote her answer. Realizing what she wrote and unable to share that she tears it off and rolls it up. When she drops it Weaver is about to pick it up when she grabs it and swallows it. An unusual response that perks his curiousity.

There assignment from Jenna is to center on their differing perspective of justice. Paris is skeptical and is ready to bolt after she finds he is writing a report to hopefully be published. She seeks out Jenna and after their talk she decides Weaver needs the help as much as she does.

The two of them have different issues as has been the case in the previous books as well. They begin getting to know each other, walking in the cool fall air to the ocean.

Their conversation is just the tip of the iceberg Paris has to overcome. Her major fear is one connected to what she reveals to Weaver but doesn't come to the fore until later.

I love the journey as painful as it is for both Paris and Weaver. Their connection develops slow and steady and I loved getting a glimpse of Sean and Robin.

These books were powerful, different and enlightening to struggles many people have.

An amazing set of three books that look deeply at some issues affecting characters and how they could use love to combat those fears and in the process also find love with their partner in the workshop. Well written, easy to read and the thoughts and emotions were easy to feel. You will find yourself reading this faster and faster as you become more and more hooked on the stories and need to know what happens next.

#1 - SKIN 5*

Two people are made to work together in a therapy class - Kane is dealing with great anger after betrayal and Tania is a rape victim whois trying to deal with her fear of intimacy. Together they need to work together and try to find a solution to their problems. Tania is using a medium she can express herself in - her camera and her subject is the human body - shown via Kane's physical body. Looking through the lens of a camera, she learns to find beauty and compassion...and the strength to find wholeness...with him.

This was an incredibly moving book which put you right into their thoughts, hearts and dreams as they worked together to find answers to their problems. I found myself being pulled into their world and feeling the thoughts and emotions that they were experiencing. It was quite emotional as the story came to a finish and I was thrilled at the way it ended. If anyone deserved the kind of happiness they had in the future, it was Kane and Tania. A great story that will pull at your heartstrings.

#2 - SCARS 5*

Both Robin and Sean live but do not thrive in the world. They need to find a way to move forward even if they have to face some painful truths (or realities) to get there. They have different problems, but those problems mean that they can complement each other and help each other to go through the process.

This was a powerful story following the processes of their self-discovery and acceptance of who (and what) they are. They were able to help each other through the process and it soon became clear that love is the key to the problem - firstly love of yourself, and in the process of finding that it became clear that that had translated to love of each other too. Definitely a story to pull your heartstrings and let you feel their thought and emotions as they worked through the problems. Loved this story.

#3 - SCALES 5*

Paris believes that Justice is coming to her - she just has no idea when and so is permanently frighted and wary of everything and everyone. Weaver is waiting for Justice to be done in the case of the death of a close family member, and the process of doing that affects his ability to form close relationships or trust people. Together they are both sides of the Justice coin - can they work together to resolve their problems?

I loved this story - Paris was like a skittish animal that was terrified of anything and anyone even though she had a backbone that enabled her to function in the world by hiding everything. Weaver was a calming influence on her while she was able to challenge him on many of his behaviours and beliefs. Their friendship developed out of their need to help each other and that then turned into love. A very deep story that really makes you think. Very enjoyable and very easy to feel their thoughts and emotions.

The situations in which the characters experienced in their past may be triggering for some as it deals with rape and child abuse.

I could not put this book down and read all three in one day. Powerfully written and a unique take on therapy to overcome the next hurdles in recovery for serious trauma. The love stories for each were gently eased in with care and the scenes for Skin where Kane allows Tania to safely step over her boundaries I went back and reread over a couple times.

An interesting plot that starts with fears and emotions of the ones coming for this intense therapy. They have tried others and deep down they all are looking for a healing, love and moving on to a new way of life.
Good detail as they went thru exploration, to healing and then love.
Well done and enjoyed.

These books were good. They just weren't to my liking. It took me a while to read them. They were too intense for me.

I've read this series. While it won't be to everyone's taste, I personally loved it. These were so very 'real'. Favorite Series.
