Gypsy is either written exceptionally poorly, completely mistranslated, or a combination of both. I found it in a discount bin and took a flier on it, and the dialogue is a bizarre mess full of quips that are either nonsense or directly translated into nonsense. The story is over the top bad like a 80s/90s action movie, but also fast-paced and still somehow weirdly enjoyable. Gypsy’s saving grace is the art, and also the main reason I’m still reading it. Although there’s some major asterisks in that department as well. Expressions are at times very over the top anime, but they do nail the frequently changing scenery and numerous explosions quite well. Also, I didn’t realized how much of a horny book this was when I bought it. Thats is neither good nor bad, but it does add another layer of pervy weirdness to the overall product. So. Should you read Gypsy? I dunno! Maybe ask yourself, how do you usually feel about trainwrecks?
A very reluctant **** and only because the story itself is solid despite the "dressing" being sour. The nerdiest sayings and the stupidest antics are the guy's halmarks making him insufferable but the rest of the cast is very well written.
The art is spectacular but the facial expressions a manga-overdone which annoys me.
Like a more grown up version of Big Trouble in Little China, this series follows a truck driver on his adventures through exotic countries, where he fights bad guys and has sex with beautiful women.
However, the series is far more raunchy than what you might be used to in American comics, and the characters are certainly more ambiguous, which makes it all the more interesting.
The fact that it doesn't treat the reader as a child, makes it both clever and captivating, while at the same time being tremendously entertaining, akin to the great action films of the 80s before political correctness grabbed the world by the balls.
I'm slowly working my way through everything that Martini has drawn and I have to say that so far this new serie starts well. There's a lot of action and the setting is a near future earth where due to pollution airplanes are no longer used to transport materials and instead a gigantic highway has been constructed and is used by giant trucks to carry products all across the earth. We follow one such truckers who is of Gypsy origin.
The art style reminds me of Akira. The main character looks like Rambo with the black tank top and red headband. I don't think Smolderen and Marini intended to make me think of Lincoln Hawk.
