As the sun rises on a quiet Swiss mountain village in 1957, runaway Peppa Mueller wakes up naked and stranded on the roof of her employer’s manor, with no idea how she got there. As she waits for help, she struggles to piece together fragmented memories of the previous night. Did she really witness the brutal massacre of a local family? Did she kill them? From page one, the hook was set and the first mystery begins. A young woman awakening on a roof, naked with no clear recollection of how she got there. Was she a part of brutal murders? Was she another victim who got away? Was it a dream? Peppa is a loner of sorts, a strong personality that is the driving force throughout Gabrielle Mathieu’s THE FALCON FLIES ALONE. This is the tale of a woman on the run from the authorities, desperate to find the hidden secrets of the strange doctor, Unruh. As Pe ...more

Peppa had some explaining to do. She was found stark naked on the top of her new employer's roof, the local policeman attending the rescue only had one question. Why the name in the passport didn't match that he knew her by. The reason was simple. Following the death of her father Peppa had stood to inherit a fortune, but instead she was left at the mercy of her aunt, and she felt she had no choice but to flee, making her money in almost any way she could until she was old enough to claim her in ...more

Peppa Mueller has a lot going for her. The daughter of a deceased Harvard professor who gave her an eclectic upbringing, she is heir to his fortune, and Radcliffe has accepted her application for undergraduate study in chemistry–her gift and her passion. Too bad that her conventional Swiss relatives cannot imagine why any young lady would want a college education in 1957.

Sick of their constraints, she runs away from their home in Basel, even though she cannot collect her inheritance for another

I have received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I have been in the mood lately to read fantasy, so this set quite nicely with my mood! Especially because it’s set in Switzerland and Germany, which makes it so much more appealing for me.

When Peppa wakes up, she’s naked on the top of a roof. She has an awful memory about a bloody attack and turning into a falcon – but surely that was a dream? When

I received an ecopy from the author for review. All of the opinions are my own.

This book! I wasn't sure what to expect, but I ended up loving it! Full of mystery and secrets! I loved finding out things slowly and in bites and peices as I read. The characters were fun and interesting, and the plot flowed smoothly, and kept me reading.

I was given a review copy by the author in exchange for an honest review. There will be some spoilers in this review, but there will be a warning before they come up.

After her father's death, Peppa Mueller takes a job as a caretaker to a wealthy family to wait out the weeks until her 20th birthday, when she can claim her inheritance and move on with the rest of her life. On her first night in a new town, Peppa witnesses a brutal massacre that lands her right in the center of a murder investigati

Disclaimer: I read a free review copy of this book.

The Falcon Flies Alone is a supernatural science-fiction novel set in Switzerland and Germany during the 1950’s. It follows the fraught tale of Peppa; the recently orphaned daughter of a respected chemist who is a skilled scientist in her own right. When we join her, however, she is far from the halls of Radcliffe where she had expected to be studying. After the death of her father, she was left in the care of her Aunt until she came of age at

I received this book to review as a beta reader about two and a half years ago, and it has finally been published! This suspense/crime novel is interwoven with fantasy elements, tough they are only introduced later on. It takes place in Switzerland in the 1950s, giving it historical context, although this becomes far more relevant in book two.
It features a fascinating cast of characters, namely Peppa. She is ruthless and badass (and not too keen on people) and undergoes a lot of character devel

When a book starts with a naked woman on a roof wondering how she got there and more pressingly how on earth she’s going to get down, you might think that the plot of this book would have you in it’s grip. Instead I found that the plot, though smooth, was almost too flat and it was the force of the characters that kept me reading. From the not super likable heroine to the villain who’s image was drawn with such depth he gave me nightmares, the characters were easily the stars of the novel.

Wow! What an interesting and enjoyable read from Gabrielle Mathieu. The title of this book put me off a bit, causing me to think it might be in the romance genre. It's not, and instead it's a great mix of science and fantasy, plus a coming of age story. My one issue - what kept me from ranking it with 5 stars - was the the main character, Peppa. I just couldn't find a way to LIKE her very much. On the other hand, I didn't dislike her, and the story surrounding her is a good one. We can hope that ...more

As I have very little time to read for leisure, I try to choose my books wisely. I'm glad to say I picked a winner! From the moment I began reading the story, I was hooked. It is well-written with just the right balance between character development and suspense. And since I live in Switzerland, that certainly added to my enjoyment.
The tale leads us into a world of psychedelic drugs, shape-shifting, and juxtapositions reality and fantasy. It's smooth and easy read makes for an engaging story tha

I really appreciate the free books from Goodreads! This one was a little tough to read. Perhaps the lead character was too human?! I don't mind my heroes being real people with real problems and human frailty, but this girl really chose unwisely. I don't feel inclined to read book 2.

This book has received a Discovering Diamonds Review:
' Although possibly more fantasy than history, and maybe a bit too ‘adult detail’ for some readers (drugs etc) but for all that as an adventure into a psychological thriller other-worldly-type first novel of a series, this one is highly enjoyable if you like your history entangled within fantasy. '

This was an incredibly original story. It was a wonderful break from my usual YA reads. It’s nature reminds me of Laini Taylors work in Daughter Of Smoke And Bone. Where you have a clash of the odd, weird and mythical mashing together to get you something new and intriguing.

If I begin to explain to you what happens, I don’t think you’ll even understand. You need to read this from page one to fully grasp what’s happening. The very first page had me hooked. Peppa, the protagonist, is strong, smart

I became absolutely engrossed in this debut novel THE FALCON FLIES ALONE. It is a fascinating blend of fantasy, thriller, psychedelic drugs, and an unexplained murder supposedly committed by the peaceful Swiss-American girl Peppa who is fleeing the police….is she guilty of this murder or she is not? And if she is, what drugged her before the violent act which is a horror to her? Even she is not sure.

Searching for answers about the drugs and the truth about the father she idolized and lost and so

I took some time reading this book. It wasn't the book's fault, it was my lack of time. During those breaks, the book's disconcerting theme stayed with me. The author had created a sense of foreboding, akin to a thought that leaves a bad taste. I just couldn't bear not to discover the outcome - no matter how awful it might be.

I found myself wrong-footed several times. In my mind I was seeing a Gothic horror, underplayed and suspenseful. It was a shock to be reminded that we were in 1950s. That w

The Falcon Flies Alone weaves a tale about a young woman, Peppa, battling societal forces of 1950s Switzerland and murder charges related to the lethal misuse of psychedelic drugs. With the help of a Tibetan expedition guide and two laboratory scientists who worked with her father, a Harvard pharmaceutical researcher, she seeks to clear her name and to foil her aunt’s plans to control the fortune she’s meant to inherit on her 20th birthday. Through fine detail and deadpan humor, the book reveals ...more

In a remote Swiss mountain village in 1957, an asocial orphan is accused of taking part in a gruesome triple murder. Yet within pages we find ourselves rooting for plucky Peppa Mueller, as she uses her intelligence and honed analytical skills to track down the manipulative mastermind behind the massacre. “The Falcon Flies Alone” is a highly original, pleasurable read. I look forward to her next adventure.

As one of Mathieu's advanced readers, I thought that the strange tale Peppa found herself in had me turning the pages swiftly to find out what really happened. It was a game of cat and mouse (or should I say, falcon and mouse), as she ran after clues from one place to the next. Although Peppa was sometimes not a heroine easy to like, hers was a world steeped in the secrets of the laboratory and Amazon flora. An unusual story that brings together fantasy and science fiction.

I loved this book: an unusual science fiction/fantasy novel set in 1950s Switzerland, which integrated the fantastic parts of its narrative seamlessly into a suspense-filled plot about murder, deception and organic chemistry.

Stuck in the regressive society of her birth after an adolescence in comparatively freer Boston and her father's death, the protagonist Peppa means to lie low for a few weeks until she can claim her inheritance. Instead, the machinations of a sinister German doctor (with the

Gabrielle Mathieu lived on three continents by the age of eight. She’d experienced the bustling bazaars of Pakistan, the serenity of Swiss mountain lakes, and the chaos of the immigration desk at the JFK airport. Perhaps that’s why she developed an appetite for the unusual and disorienting. Her fantasy books are grounded in her experience of different cultures and interest in altered states of con ...more
