The United States of America. Home to fifty states and over 318 million people, all of them with singular opinions and the freedom to express them. But it took over 240 years of history to reach this point. What if a crucial decision led to a vastly different America, with different factions fighting for independence, different religions dividing the country and different regions divided by their beliefs and cultures? How about if resource-rich cities and states seceding from the Union to form ...more

Disclaimer: I am friends with some of the authors in this anthology; however, I purchased the hardcopy version of this book for full price.

This was a fun collection of different story-telling styles that explored how events might have been altered in the history of the United States of America. Most of the stories were solid and enjoyable, especially those that included representation from the continents indigenous populations. As noted in the introduction, this book was published prior to

I love the writers at Crazy8s.
I love this book.
And I learned a few things.
Finding the change point in this kind of book is always interesting. [even when the author gives it to you up front.]
Seeing the development of "What If' is the best part.
Read this now.

How different America could be...Chilling.

Ever since Mike Resnick got me hooked on Alternate Worlds anthologies, I've always loved a collection of "What If..?" tales. Glenn Hauman has put together an engrossing and exciting collection of tales with unconventional premises and kick-off points for its alternate history. It is on par with the best anthologies I've read and reignited my love of this fascinating subgenre.

I once heard that you judge a fiction magazine by its best story and an anthology by its worse. If that is so, I am being generous with my rating. It begins with a story about Lincoln in which the President plans his own assassination. Sorry, a nineteenth century Christian (yes I know lots of you think he was a secular humanist atheist like you. Read his speeches and private writings in the case you are interested in the truth) would never do that. The Great Chasm by David and Hildy Silverman ...more
