Translated from old Spanish biographies, this is the story of a monk known as St. John of the Cross who lived in the 1500s. It is an interesting window into the international power the Catholic church wielded, sometimes to the detriment of even dedicated monks. The author was bent on making sure readers know that John was humble, loved his fellow man, and followed reforms which caused him to land opposite of the leaders he was supposed to be under. He paid for that rebellion with a year of his life in tortuous confinement at the hands of church leaders, but finished his life worthy of Catholic sainthood.
