The best insights I know of Jimmy Murphy, board track racing, and 1920s American auto racing.

i won't go into it
but it is about auto racing when there was no safety and the tracks were from 1/2 mile to 2.5 miles and oval made of wood (or dirt)
this chronicals the tracks the drivers and the cars in a great read
the author gets a bit bitey on the sources he used and does not write in a literary or academic way, it is more Lecture like.
but if you like pre WW1 stuff, this is a good glimpse into Racing great pictures too.
