Shut the front door!!! This book was great it had me at the first chapter. I loved the world they told us just a little but enough to keep us interested and the main character Alice kept me guessing. The very best part of the book is the mage Isaac Moreau. I'm looking forward to next book. Five stars

I am so not impressed with the hero, Isaac.

Also, detailed OW encounter. Utterly tasteless.

Surprisingly this wasn’t the same old UF. It did have vampires, mages, and ghosts/evil spirits, but the world was different. Ghosts, poltergeists, and the like lived in an alternate realm, but sometimes they managed escape out of their world and into this one. Alice was the only person to have entered the other realm and lived to tell about it. Escaping that realm had consequences. Alice had a special one of a kind camera that allowed her to capture a soul in the picture, so people pai

Really difficult to get through. The story drags, the characters are one dimensional and the dialogue is almost robotic at times. Everything about the characters is over exaggerated- their actions, conversations, and reactions to events going on around them. Nothing feels believable and as a result, you don't care about what happens to them. It's impossible to immerse yourself in the story because the writing is so bad- it reads like a rough draft of a first-time author, unpolished and without a ...more

Started a little slow but picked up. Enjoy reading this one. Great surprise at the end. Can't wait to read the rest of this series.

Wow! This was an amazing story. The characters were well developed and the world building was out of sight! If you're wondering whether or not to buy it, go for it. You won't be disappointed. I was upset that the heroine left the hero. But all is well in the end.

I kind of hated this book. I would have stopped reading it if I hadn't been about 3/4 the way done and needing one more book read to finish my reading challenge for this year. I thought word choice was clunky throughout, and so many things weren't well explained. And without those explanations of how things worked in this world, or even how things *had* worked in this world (old incident from before the book that gets talked about, ish) it is nearly impossible to become properly invested in this ...more
This was an amazing story! Alice is a hunter of bothersome otherworldly creatures - think poltergeists and other ghosty types. And they way she goes about it was really unique. The tool of her trade is an old-school camera named Trapper. As the story goes on, Trapper almost seems like a character unto itself, and I really loved the whole concept behind how it worked.

When a young girl is dragged into another realm by one of the worst haunts out there, Alice and Trapper won't be enough to get her

It was spooky and creepy. It wasn't what I had originally expected it to be. I like paranormal and urban fantasy. I just wasn't expecting the depth of the creep. I described it to one of my friends as a horror/urban fantasy. Maybe I'm wrong to refer to it as horror, but it didn't leave me wanting to read this in the dark, even though I ended up finishing it at almost 11 pm.
However, in the midst of things, the creepy factor vanished or reappeared at will. I wouldn't have minded a good ol' haunti

Awesome and original

Lately it seems as if books regarding magic, vampires, shifters or anything of that nature are coming out of the woodwork. Sadly most of them sound the same. You've read one, you've read them all. NOT this one! Totally original concept with an alternate dimension, the Reflection, and a woman who has survived being taken there and escaping. She didn't escape unscathed, however, and has some unnatural talents as a result. She uses those talents as a paranormal bounty hunter, of

The stubbornness of the heroine is refreshing. This is a truly imaginative story that keeps on developing in its magical essence. As I neared the plot’s climax it became increasingly harder to put the book down.

The creatures were interesting and in some places quite frightening where I felt suspense as to what they could do to Alice. Her stubbornness and persuasiveness gave the story character. Parts of the story was set in a large museum, with an endless scope for the paranormal to lurk, which

This book was awesome. I listened to the audio-book version, partly because I wanted to read this book sooner than I knew I had time for, and partly because Laurel Schroeder did the narrating. I'm glad I did, because the book was highly entertaining for me. The imagery was awesome. The story was awesome. The depth was awesome. And I found myself genuinely creeped out by what was going on in the story, probably a good half-dozen times, at least. When a story can freak you out and keep you on the ...more

Interesting Story

I picked this up on a whim and I’m glad I did. The story and the characters are interesting, although I still am not quite sure what a Lich is. I’m anxious to start on book number two!

Alice Werner, Paranormal Investigator Extraordinaire. 5 MAGICAL STARS

“Remember to tell your friends; I work on referrals only.” She had some destiny to fulfill, some role to play in the great stage of the universe. Alice wasn’t the chosen one, but she had been chosen to do something with her life. This is where the magic happens. HOLY SMOKE! What a great book! Nyx that! It's ABSO-LICH-LUTELY a truly SPELLTASTIC & MAGENIFICENT story!! The story is darker, but in a nighttime film-noir kind of

Careful, this might put you off going to the cinema

I loved the book from the start, especially the cinema scenario, it had me reaching for a cushion to hide behind.

The characters are really well written and it is a book that will have hooked.

I always start with - this is a SPOILER FREE REVIEW. Now that is out of the way, let's start with the fact this is the 1st book I've read by these authors; BUT IT WON'T BE THE LAST!!!!!
I will be 100% honest when I say I needed to fall asleep to the Disney Channel after i read the prologue. No book has had me that scared since I was much younger stealing my moms Stephen King books.
The story does not stay scary through, obviously, since it's not in the horror genre.

This book wasn't what I was expecting at first. In the beginning it almost read as a horror story and I almost quit reading it. I'm glad I didn't stop. The book was definitely a surprise and I ended up enjoying this book. It was a different story line from the the usual urban fantasy books and I look forward to reading the rest of the series. If you love urban fantasy, but are looking for something different then I recommend reading this book. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I di

First, I just want to say that I hate giving bad reviews... Pros: The world & supernatural beings & laws that the authors have come up with are fascinating & unique. I was really intrigued. The use of language was great & the story's pace flowed well. Cons: Things were not explained at the right time & in the right ways a time or two. The two main characters were not fleshed out enough, I think. I just did not feel an attachment to either of them (which for me, is rare).

There were several intense parts and it wasn't until I was reading in bed at night that if I stopped at an intense moment my brain would try to put things in the shadows of my room. I do tend to scare easy as I wouldn't be surprised if very few people have the same opinion as me.
The characters were interesting and it was fast paced and exciting but I'm not in a hurry to read the next one. I don't feel the need to consume the sequel ASAP but I'll probably eventually get to it.

Interesting view of a different supernatural world

The start is something out of the best horror movie out there. Very dark brooding and spooky. You really feel the tension ratchet up with Nate and Emily's part in the story.
Then it comes to Alice's part of in all this. Alice is a bounty hunter of all things that go bump in the night. Her weapon of choice? An old Polaroid camera called Trapper. Very creative thinking.
I can't help but think there was something lacking. It felt a little lost to me
This is an interesting take on a fantasy novel. I actually really liked it but its different than I expected. I didn't expect much so this most certainly was better than what I did think it could be.

I like Alice, she isn't like a lot of YA lead girls and expects/gets lots of males to save her and shes weak and feeble. Alice is a little like that, she does need Issaac to get anywhere but she can hold her own for the most part.

I don't really get the 'shadow woman' why she is who she is. I didn't g

"Nooooooo!!!!!!" she wails into the night like a dying banshee. That was my reaction when I reached the end of the book. It's that good. You just have to read it. I've never seen myth, magic, and the paranormal handled in quite this way before, and it's amazing.
In Dark Siren we're introduced to the world of Ashwood and some of it's more interesting citizens - Alice and Isaac being 2 of them. The chemistry and tension between this pair is something else. And I'm already counting down the minutes

Awesome, really spooky urban fantasy. If you like ghost stories, or some chilling suspense mixed into your urban fantasy, look no further. Just don't start reading this book before bed. Either you'll be scared awake, or you'll be so excited to find out what happens next - either way, you're not getting any sleep!

I really liked the characters. Alice is tough and cool without even trying. An ex-cop, Alice is a "leap into action" kind of woman, but she's not stupid or into unnecessary risks. Nah, s

I really wanted to like this.

I liked the premise, and the sample chapters made me dive in. Somewhere around 30%, though, everything stalled. Trying to figure out what made this urban fantasy different than the others, the only thing i can think is that Alice spends too much time in her head. She's got a condition that makes her do something morally offensive; instead of owning it or curing it or ignoring it, she dwells on it. Naturally, the fact that she developed the condition after a life-chan

Wow! This book was fabulous and I couldn't put it down. I love Urban Fantasy & have pretty much read it all but this offers somethings different from the normal and I think that definitely adds to the appeal. I would say that it is well written with great pacing. The story was exciting, dangerous, violent, spooky....and much more. The characters were written well, easy to become involved with and they had secrets that made them even more interesting. There is a romantic element but that is n ...more

I really like the concept of this book. Paranormal investigator/bounty hunter armed with only snark and an old Polaroid camera? Sign me up! Alice is interesting, tough but vulnerable, and fun to follow through an adventure. The atmosphere, especially in the beginning, was really creepy and well done. The world building (the small bit we were shown, anyway) was intriguing too.

However, the writing is choppy and could have been filled out a great deal more. It read like a somewhat polished

Congrats! What a well written story!

Alice Werner is one tough as nails women, and she has a very interesting job and a helpful assistant called Trapper.
