A quick and fun Mafia cozy mystery that mostly takes place in New York, but mama Carlita who is recently widowed, her daughter Mercedes and one of her sons, Vinnie are moving to Savannah. I can't wait to find out what the future holds for them down south.

Carlita Garlucci finds a key to her deceased husband's safety deposit box. Inside the box she discovers a deed to property in Savannah and some gemstones. And the mafia wants the gems back.

I enjoyed this first in series cozy mystery. Non-stop fun from beginning to end. Callaghan writes her protagonist like she is a long time friend and places her in a totally charming Southern town. She surrounds her protagonist with fun secondary characters and tough guy antagonists.

A swift moving, enjoyable cozy mystery.

This is my first book by Hope Callaghan but I intend to read her other ones. In fact, I have others loaded on my Kindle.
It was interesting to read a book about members of a mob family. I felt that Ms. Callaghan did a great job developing characters and the dialogue. When the family patriarch, Vinnie Garlucci, dies of questionable circumstances, his family is upset at his untimely death. He leaves behind his wife, Carlita, daughter, Mercedes, sons, Vincent, Jr, Anthony and Paulie.
As Carlita was going through his clothes, she discovered a key in a pocket of the coat he was wearing when he was taken to the hospital. The key is to a safety deposit box where she and Mercedes found a deed to property in old historic Savannah, Georgia. They also found a bag of jewels that they had appraised at a neighborhood jeweler. Carlita remembered that before Vinnie died, he told her to get his sons out. She thought that he meant out of the mob but maybe he meant out of the city. Carlita and Mercedes decide to go to Savannah to check out the property against the wishes of the sons. But neither of them drive because they never had to as they did all of their shopping and business in their Queens neighborhood. Mercedes does have a license to drive so she practices driving Vinnie's big black Lincoln baby around the neighborhood and pretty soon they take off. Since they are a little short of funds, they sell some of the jewels to finance their trip. They make it to Savannah and find the property that turns out to be a couple of buildings in the beautiful historic district. They make friends with a fellow living in the neighborhood who introduces them to a contractor. With his help, they make plans to renovate the buildings, one for their living area and one to rent out. This would be a fresh start for a life away from the mafia especially if they can convince the brothers to join. So, they head home to make plans to move to Savannah.
I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

Carlita Garlucci has just lost her husband Vinnie, a member of the mob. Like most women in the family she knows little about the business. In Vinnie's dying breath he begs Carlita to get his sons out. She assumes "out of the business". She finds a key in his pocket and goes to a safe deposit box she didn't know about and finds deeds to Savannah properties and a pouch of gems. Some people are trying to find what Vinnie had and keep breaking into the house she shares with daughter Mercedes. Carlita and Mercedes go to Savannah to look at the properties and decide to renovate them and move to Savannah away from the mob. Carlita is feisty and stands up to her three sons who expect her to bow to them the way she did her late husband and moves in spite of their scoldings. In getting ready to move she finds more that Vinnie was doing and manages to evade those who are after everything. For now... we'll see in the next book in the series.

A very fast read with warm and interesting characters. Carlita and Mercedes are the widow and daughter of a member of the mob. Starting a new life with plans to leave New York and move to Savannah, they encounter a variety of situations from opposing family members to drugs. I would have enjoyed more excitement and action but it is a good story and I will read more from this series.

Key To Savannah: Made in Savannah Cozy Mysteries Series Book 1 is by Hope Callaghan. This is a cute mystery and one that is easily read in one sitting.
Carlita Garlucci was at her husband’s bedside when he died. Just before his death, he made her promise to “Get my sons….out. Get them out.” She promised and thinks he meant get them out of the ‘family”, the mafia. However, she knew that they wouldn’t go. Vinny, her eldest, was into the family just like her husband had been. Tony, the middle son, was into flashy cars and races more than the family business. Her youngest son, Paulie, was already out of the business and living in the suburbs with his family. Her daughter, Mercedes, hadn’t been allowed in the business so she was just fine. Carlita decided she needed to get Mercedes away and make her independent so she didn’t have to rely on a man to care for her.
Going through his clothes, Carlita found an envelope with a key in it. Mercedes figured it out to be a savings deposit box and which bank. They went to get it and luckily Vincent had put Carlita’s name on the box so they took an envelope which held the deeds to some land and property in Savannah, Georgia and a sack of gems. They decided to take the deed and go to Savannah to see what they had inherited. The gems would allow them to restore the buildings on the site. However, the “family” was after them. Evidently, Vincent had something they wanted. Carlita is eager to get out of town. She has no idea what the ‘family’ wanted.

Carlita Garlucci said goodbye to her husband, Vinnie, a few short months ago, promising him on his deathbed that she would pull their three sons out of the Mafia family business in Key to Savannah by Hope Callaghan. Now as she finally is sorting through her husband's clothes, she finds a key to a safety deposit box, which she takes her daughter, Mercedes, to check. At the bank, they learn that Vinnie added Carlita's name to the account the same day he died -- was murdered? -- and open the box. There they find a deed to property in Savannah, Georgia and a dozen incredibly valuable-looking gems. So Carlita and Mercedes make up their minds to move from Queens to Savannah, to the strong opposition of Carlita's sons.

Catholics take another hit

As a Christian I felt bad that another religion took a hit. That and the facts of being a Mafia wife & family were off. There would be no way if the Mafia was looking for something, that the family could have left the house, let alone the state w/o being trailed. I do like the characters & will read the next book, in this series.

Could have been an interesting premise but the writing was 8th grade level and the “book” is no more than an introductory chapter. Beware: if like me you hate books that are merely a series of cliffhangers that force you to buy the next one to follow the story you will be as irritated by this book as I was. There’s a reason it was free and I’m glad it was.

An entertaining book about a family in The Family without the usual mayhem but plenty of twists and turns. Very enjoyable.

DNF- Not exactly the Southern cozy mystery I was anticipating. The name can be deceiving. Primarily set in New York, the characters were a bit of a snooze for me.

Key to Savannah is the first book in Hope Callaghan’s Made in Savannah Cozy Mysteries Series. Ms. Callaghan has written a well thought out and interesting mystery, with a good story line and excellent character development. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The mystery is carried on well throughout the entire book and there are enough twists and turns to hold the reader’s interest. The author is very talented in descriptive writing and much of the time I was reading, I felt like I was right there watching the activities taking place. This is a clean cozy mystery featuring no gratuitous sex, violence, or foul language. I’m looking forward to reading the next installment in this series and seeing how the characters and their relationships develop. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well-crafted cozy mystery.

On his deathbed, Vincent “Vinnie” Garlucci makes his wife, Carlita, promise to get his sons “out” and she was convinced he meant to get them out of the “family.” Vinnie and Carlita had four children, three sons, Vinnie Jr., Anthony, and Paulie, and one daughter, Mercedes. Several months after his death, Carlita decided it was time to sort through Vinnie’s clothes. In the bag containing the clothes Vinnie had been wearing the day he was admitted to the hospital, she found his favorite jacket and couldn’t resist the urge to wrap herself up in it. As she took the jacket off, she found an envelope addressed to her in the front pocket and it contained a key she had never seen before. She showed the key to Mercedes, who did some research, and discovered it was a key to a safe deposit box at their local bank. Carlita and Mercedes went to the bank and when they opened the safe deposit box, they found a deed to some properties in Savannah, Georgia and a small bag of precious gems. Even though two of her sons weren’t willing to discuss getting “out” of the “family” business and none of them would entertain the thought of leaving New York, Carlita and Mercedes decided to take a road trip to Savannah to look at the property Vinnie had left her without letting her sons know about their plans. Their home is broken into several times ad vandalized once and Carlita and Mercedes start asking questions and even try to set up a trap to catch the culprit or culprits.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first time reading Hope Callaghan and I must say I really enjoyed every chapter! It really makes you understand why they call it a cozy mystery and I think I'm really starting to enjoy them. Ms Callaghan took me along on a nice adventure of your basically average mother and daughter when their seemingly mundane lives takes a change in a direction neither of them could have imagined before. Catalina, a widow who comes to realize what she is capable of and how strong she really is. Mercedes, her daughter, seems young but a little wiser than I imagine her to be but I don't believe her age is mentioned (or I forgot). She is very smart, and caring and who in my opinion seems to become closer to her mom as their adventure unfolds. Together they travel to Savannah to embark on possibly a new life. As they move forward they encounter a few mysteries, a few new and old friends that may try to stop them in their path. I love how sweet they both are. How their mother-daughter relationship is respectable, loving and supportive. I'm looking forward to the next installment, I can't wait to see how these two ladies are doing!

E-Reader. Cozy Mystery

Vincent / Vinnie Garlicci was in the mob. His
sons Tony & Paulie also in the mob. The other son Vinnie wasn't. His wife Carlita & daughter were typical family who knew of the family connection to the mob, but not told any details.
On Vinnie's deathbed he makes Carlita to get his sons out of the mob.
Carlita finds some keys one with a tag & Mercedes says for a bank safe deposit box. And it was, it held deeds to property in Savannah, Georgia & small bag of real gems.
Mercedes has a drivers license, but never driven her father's big black car. Her Mom agrees to let her try driving the car. You'll laugh at her early attempts to drive. The two decide to drive to Savannah without telling sons, to check out the property Carlita now owns.
You'll need to read the book to find out what happens in Savannah. Also back home including a visit from Vito Castellini, mob boss. There is a lot that happens. Really good read.

Key to Savannah (...Book 1)

I rated this book five stars because it is a delightful story of a family with realistic ups and downs and is very believable.
I received this book free as part of the author, Hope Callaghan's review team, to which I give my honest opinion on her books.
I recommend this book to those readers who like clean stories with good story lines and whodunnit endings that are far from figuring them out, which make a story worth reading.
I liked the main characters and I can't wait for the next follow-up book in this new, Christian Cozy Mystery.
Thanks Hope, for a wonderful story I believe is a great beginning of a new series in your repertoire of good, clean mysteries.

Fantastic! Another great new series from Hope! There is light intrigue, mystery in this easy read. The characters get established and are built upon throughout book 1.
Carlita, whose husband Vinnie is a "made man" with ties to the mafia, dies in the hospital, in their town of Queens New York. Whispers last words to Carlita. She and their daughter, Mercedes have always been taken care of by the men in their family (sons: Vinnie Jr, Tony, Paulie). But these two women decide to become their own and start doing and figuring things out in order to make a different life for themselves. They find a deed to some property down in Savannah Ga.........and take off to see what is there. For Hope Callaghan fans - you will not be disappointed.

Not the most enjoyable book that I have read. I found it really hard to finish and thought about not finishing it at all. Spent time just skipping and skimming paragraphs. It was nice to have a mother and daughter duo with no lover triangles as of yet in the first book. I was confused a lot. Carlita Mercedes had no trouble paying 100 bucks for a cab ride but later worried about paying for a trip to Savannah to look at property, then further along Carlita says she's ok financially the worries about spending 200 dollars on groceries. Made no since to me. I don't believe that I will be reading anymore of this series. Disappointed that it had such high reviews and it just fell flat for me.

I just finished reading Key to Savannah. It is a story about a Mafia wife who has just lost her husband. Upon going through his clothes, she finds an envelope with a key and a note. This leads her and her daughter to property in Savannah that she was unaware of. Against the wishes of her 3 sons, the two decide to travel to Savannah and inspect the property. They decide to move there and they return to New York to sell the house there. Meanwhile, the house in New York has been broken into several times. Things just keep happening with an unexpected ending. I really enjoyed the book and can hardly wait for the next one.

Carlita Garlucci is fulfilling the promise she made to her dying husband. She and her daughter, Mercedes, are leaving New York and the mafia life for the historic city of Savannah. Although the promise her husband extracted from her included her sons too they are unwilling to pull up roots and move to Georgia. She can only hope her sons and no one else from the mob will follow her there. Vinnie’s death has created complications with rumors of an uncompleted “drop” and break-ins at their home.

Although a mob family doesn’t fit my mental image of cozy mysteries, the author has made it into an enjoyable storyline with a portent of interesting plots for more books in the series.

Not enough depth

The plot is good but we didn't get enough depth of the characters. The death of the father/husband who is part of the mafia is sketchy at best. While we are introduced to all the characters you don't get a feel for their where there importance is going forward. Moving, worrying the sons won be happy then it fails to follow through just drops after a sentence or two. Where's the expected big scene? Little misses that could have given this five stars. Not a bad read. Hoping the second one is better. Fell this was rushed to finish.

Key to Savannah

I loved this book! Two of my favorite cities and a mob family, how could it get any better! Such an easy read one I couldn't put down. Great story about two women that didn't know their own strength until life taught them in a funny way! After growing up in Savannah I recognized the names of the streets and could picture the buildings that Carlita and her daughter inherited. I can not wait to read the rest of the books to see the adventures they get into!

Getting a new lease on life

After the death of her husband, Carlita, is left with the responsibility of keeping her promise to her husband to get their 3 sons and daughter out of the mob life. Keeping that promise involves moving from New York to Savannah, GA. Talk about culture shock. Join Carlita and her daughter, Mercedes, as they pioneer transitioning their family out of the mob life. Prepare for quite a journey!

It was okay

I intend to read book two in hopes that the writing and storyline will have improved. I liked the idea of the story, but there are numerous inconsistencies and dropped stories. I won't go into it as I wouldn't want to spoil it for other readers. If the writer gets a good editor to sus out the problems while firing a couple of unnecessary characters, then this would be a better read.

This is exactly what it is advertised as....a cozy fun mystery that will take you out of a funk and place
you in Carlita's world which has become topsy turny with his husbands death. Her husband was one of the family but as with all the families wives Carlita was not a part of that world. With his death however she is thrust into that world and so are we! How she deals with it, her sons and all the fallout (including Bonnie Bimbo) makes up this book Thoroughly enjoyable.

This book surprised me. I really like Hope Callaghan's work. I wasn't sure how this one would be. I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the closeness between Mercedes and her mother. They proved that they are very strong and determined even when Vinnie, Tony and Paulie were sure that the women couldn't do it. I am looking forward to the other books in the series. You can get out of the " family" business.

There were too many inconsistencies in the story, no character depth, a barely moving plot, and a few trips outside of reality. You own property but don't have a key, and instead of trying to figure out how to get a key, you break-in? Really? I think this book had potential and maybe the next book gets better and develops the characters better. Also, the family prays, but sells known stolen gems instead of trying to find the rightful owner? Yeah, that's one of the inconsistencies.
