The First-Responders is a romance novella series focused on men in first-response professions. Each book CAN be read as a standalone, but they are linked. Book 1 is about Macy, a graduate student and soon to be elementary school teacher, and Seth, a firefighter.

Macy has had a rough go of it with boyfriends lately. "Bad luck or no luck at all" seems to be her constant go-to

When I first read the blurb I was like "Okay, this is out of my usual reading genre, but i'm intrigued. . . so let's check it out!" Breaking out of your comfortable genre and reading something that you normally might not have picked up turned out to be a good thing on this one! the story was interesting all the way through and there were a couple of shocking twists that I didn't see coming at all. but that kept you from being too complacent, it shook you up and kept you off balance and wondering ...more

The story has laughs, steam, and heartbreak.

This is Seth and Macy's story. Macy is a serial dater with a bad picker. When she meets Seth by chance, she is smitten from the start and so is he, even when they meet is unconventional. And as things start to heat up between these two, Seth's secrets begin to present themselves. Can Macy handle Seth and all that he offers?

I recommend this book and look forward to more from this author in the future.

Unexpected surprises...yup that is a very VERY accurate term! haha I did not see the surprises coming, but they added a new element to this romance that was quite entertaining and added to the story-line. I thought this book was well-written, flowed nicely and had great character development.

There were some laugh out loud parts for me, shocked parts for me, super sweet/romantic parts for me and quite a few #friendshipgoals parts for me. The book definitely has quite a few sex scenes, so for thos

When Sparks Fly is a nice change of pace from JA's previous works, and I really enjoyed it. The characters are rather humorous, which definitely helps to draw you in right from the beginning. I just love the way that Macy tries to come up with ingenious ways to meet her mystery firefighter.
Her best friend, Rachel, is hilarious, and there are many laughable conversations between them.
Seth, the sex-on-a-stick firefighter, is everything she thought he'd be, and then some. Things get hot and steamy.

3.5 star review by Kristie K.

Did you say firefighters?! Where are my matches...... If I had firemen as hot as Seth in my neighborhood, one might consider joining a life of crime just to see them in action. That being said, let's talk about the story. I've read J.A.'s work before, and can honestly say his writing is improving with each book be writes. There was a nice flow to the story, and though the plot wasn't terribly deep, it had some fun (and shocking) twists.

When Sparks Fly is a quick, sexy read with some unexpected twists. As well as being insanely hot, this book is also laugh out loud funny. This is the first book in the First Responders series, which is based around the emergency services. I think that this is a great idea for a series - who doesn't love hunky, heroic men in uniform - and I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

Macy fell in lust at first sight with the hunky firefighter she often sees outside the fire station, but she's been

J.A. Essen is a brand new author for me but with a blurb like that, I was hooked from the start. When Sparks Fly was a sexy, sweet, fast, quick, and dirty read full of laughs, smiles, and lust. This book was super cute and left me ready for the next in this series.

Meet Macy. A hot mess at times... a slightly obsessive personality... and a bad radar when it comes to men. So when she is out on one of her schemes to meet this hot guy she, she end up hurting herself and also meeting the se

I really enjoyed this book. This was the first book I've read by this author, and I can't wait for the continuation in the series.
Macy is a student finishing up her teaching degree and has the hots for a firefighter. She's goes running one day by the firehouse and the hot firefighter is working out outside the firehouse. Macy tripped over her own feet and gets knocked out. Upon awakening she meets the hot firefighter named Seth.

I was looking forward to reading this book by J.A. Essen as I loved reading his Fantasy novels, so when I saw that he was adventuring into the Erotica genre I was looking forward to see if this book would be just as awesome as the other two. However when I was reading it I couldn’t get into the book, I know that might not be great but honestly there was just something about it that didn’t click with me when I was reading it. I want to be able to say that I found the story pretty good and could f ...more

If you are looking for a short little read that will shock the hell out of you, this is the book to read. While this book had an interesting plot concept the author lost me early when the lead female trips, hits her head, is unconscious for 45 minutes and the fireman/paramedic doesn't think she needs to go to the ER. There were a couple shocking twists thrown in but they were resolved to quickly, while the characters had moved on I was still trying to adjust to the changes. I never really connec ...more

I went into "When Sparks Fly" totally blind. It is my first book by author JA Essen and I did not read any blurbs or reviews. The book starts out with a very funny scene about the lead gal, Macy, scheming on how to catch the eye of her local smoking hot fireman. Macy and Seth do end up meeting and the book takes an unexpected turn. While one relationship unravels another grows stronger. Friendships change and grow throughout. Macy and her bff Rachel are great together and I look forward to lear ...more

This is the first time I have read any of this authors work, and my word, I went into this book totally blind, and was not disappointed. This is the story of Macy, who is trying to catch the attention of the hot sexy fireman, Seth. Well she managed that in a quirky and humorous way. They start dating and when Macy decides to surprise Seth at the work, things do not go as planned, and get very interesting.

This book was a bit unexpected. If you are looking for a quick read, one that has a few relationship twists coming, then this is your book. I did like the characters and the premise of the story. I thought the h was a bit immature, but then she was young and matured a bit towards the end.
Quick hot read.

If you're looking for a short read with a handful of steamy scenes then When Sparks Fly may be for you. Though J.A. Essen's writing is vivid, the overall story took several turns that made it hard for me to stay connected to the story and leads Macy and Seth. Both characters made decisions that left me with questions about what each was looking for in a relationship. There is a twist near the end of the story that had me rereading things to se

This is my first book by J.A. Essen and what a hot and steamy introduction to this author. This is a good funny, sexy read. Macy and her craziness will draw you in along with sexy Seth.

I went into this book totally blind, hadn't even read the blurb. Macy's scheming to catch the eye of a hot fireman gets you laughing and turning the pages to see what happens next. Things only get more interesting and I don't want to give too much away. Just enjoy the sexy ride.

I loved this book so much!! It was fairly laid back and so hysterical! I've loved al of JA's work and this is no exception. As usual he does a great job of pulling us in, from the very first chapter I was hooked. The way he describes Seth in the beginning and Macy's attraction to him is where the pull begins and it just continues from there. There are so many great quirks and funny parts that you can't wait to see what comes next. He does great things too with bringing in really unexpected plot ...more

A hot steamy read anyone?? Sparks really do fly in this book, WHOA!!

Macy is a fairly uncomplicated chick. She's laid back, keeps busy, loves to run... By the fire station *wink wink*

Seth, is a little more complicated (read it to find out why hahaha). He's HOT, so HOT! And in prime physical condition...

He's outside exercising, Macy runs by to catch a glimpse, possibly catch his eye... It just flows from there. The flow of this story is nothing short of amazing with epic sex. That's important in

This was a great story about a school teacher named Macy who literally falls for a fireman named Seth. One day when Macy was jogging in front of the fire station she trips over the fire hose that was lying out front to dry and knocks herself out and was picked up by Seth and he takes care of her. it turns out that Seth has a roommate named Robbie. The roommates have a "special type of relationship" that Lacy is eventually drawn into.

Hot damn!! I'm gonna need a firehouse to cool me off after this one!! After a very interesting first meeting Macy and Seth have an instant connection.
