Tony White Hawk seeks revenge on the woman he believes is responsible for his wife's death, a woman the Native American tribes of Arizona call White Wolf, who turns out to be an innocent but haunted woman who steals his heart. Original.
I have been writing fiction for so long I can barely remember when I didn't. Sometimes people ask where I get my ideas and I can't comment too much on "ideas" either, since they come one at a time from different sources. SHADOW ON THE MOON came from a submission call for paranormal romance and since vampires were fairly well owned already, I decided to do werewolves. After that it became--and this is true for all books--a matter of putting the story together, scene by scene, then going back and making sure to leave in the good parts and take out the boring parts (which is my writing motto).
That seems to work for me. I've made a half dozen or so national bestseller lists, won a PRISM award for my sci-fi time-travel and been a finalist in a number of other well known writing contest. Now, I'm jumping into the pool of previously traditionally published authors who are choosing to publish independently. I'm truly enjoying the freedom and control this gives an author.
#AMAZING TALE ~ SHADOW OF THE WOLF (#2 Series) by Connie Flynn [Charlotte M. Liebel Review]@Sharliebel
Folklore and the paranormal breathe life into the fantasy Shadow of the Wolf (The Werewolf Series #2) by Connie Flynn. The frantic search for an escape from her Werewolf Queen persona captures the imagination of readers in this romantic story of shapeshifters. Bears, wolves, and hawks transform their identities and shapes for protection. Subjects are experienced in Extrasensory perception (ESP). Their presence is imbued through magic and powers of the mind. They train to read thoughts and locate their charges and enemies. On the flip-side, those they chase can block those sensors.
The actors are true to their character traits when in human and animal form. At times, their souls are in conflict. Evidence of pre-existing Legends interact and engage them in their former existence and this confuses them. In this world, creatures can send a drone-like image of themselves to return information.
The introduction to the tale is key to the history of Lily Angelica DeLaVega. A female deer named Sienna Doe becomes the Lupine Werewolf Queen. Our heroine is from dual cultures living in a world of mortals. Her parents are self-indulgent and this leads to a troubled child living a life of escape and poor decisions. Lily slowly matures but danger is ahead at every turn. In one of her episodes, Lily makes friends with a child that has lost her mother and we witness a change in her demeanor. But is it too late?
At the moment, Lily White Wolf Woman, is in danger of extinction. She is stalked to be killed by the werewolf leader who loves her. She killed one of her kind and broke the rules of that culture and was stripped of her protective royal gifts. But what secrets has she discovered to protect her from Sebastian the King of Wolves?
Meanwhile, Tony White Hawk of Ebony Canyon, the highly esteemed warrior, pursues Lily and locates her in New York City near Central Park. As a wolf, it was natural for Lily to kill a hawk. But Tony and the Dawn People want her captured and to stand trial for killing a high-ranking hawk. What magic can Tony use to capture the shapeshifter she-wolf alive?
The Dawn People have a hidden community and await a time of the dark moon to exit their camp to save the remnant of their culture. One of their clan has betrayed them. Magic, warriors, secrets, and amazing feats of near-death and heroism are forthcoming.
When a ritual has stripped Lilly of her werewolf status, she became an outcast. Once she was the most powerful she-wolf in the pack but now she’s nothing but a human. Yet despite missing the power that came along with the wolf, inside and deep down she knows she can’t go back. The memories of all the horrible deeds she’s done and innocents she’s killed torment her. She can’t sleep and wonders the streets of the city like a ghost. One-night Sebastian tracks her down, like she knew he always would. She barely manages to fight him off before being saved by an Eagle who shifts into a man destined to kill her.
Tony is sent on a mission to capture the evil werewolf responsible for the death of so many but for him, it’s personal. She killed his wife, left his daughter without a mother. Regardless of her new human stature and attempts to portray herself as a changed woman, she is his enemy. The true image of his hatred and vengeance. Too bad she is also somewhat charming and on their trip to where the People are encamped, he has to fight off any feelings of sympathy towards her.
As an outcast in the tribe, Lily can’t help but develop a relationship with the only one to seek her out – the hero’s daughter. She doesn’t want to girl to know the ugly truth, that Lily’s responsible for her mother death but the truth always comes to light. Seeing betrayal and sadness in the littles girls’ eyes makes her feel like the scum of the earth. But when Sebastian and the other wolves hunt them down and kidnap the little girl, Lily’s true devotion to Tony’s family sparks a change between them.
Trusting the vision that Lily is meant to be his greatest love, Tony must fight to ensure that not only she survives the Tribunal but the bloodthirsty wolves nipping at their heels.
I struggled with this book. If there was not a romantic storyline, I feel like I would have understood it better. The whole book has the underlining message of forgiveness and Tony shows the ultimate forgiveness when he thinks Lily is the one who killed his wife. The reveal that she didn’t negates all that. It’s easy to forgive when you’re shown that person isn’t responsible for the actions that made you hate them in the first place. And the concept of falling in love with the wolf who, may not have directly killed your wife, but is the murderer of so many is beyond me. Tony goes from hating Lily to taking a complete 180 into just falling head over heels in love. It wasn’t natural.
Lily was an interesting character who obviously hates what she’s down when she was a werewolf while at the same time longing for the power that came along with it. She did still have moment of savagery but for the most part, she was tortured soul who kept to herself.
Tony was a non-factor to me. He might as well have been a cardboard cutout.
