This is second in a series, but it takes place in a different town; and characters from the first are only present in cameo. So you don't really need to read these in order if you don't want to.

Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this book as much as I'd hoped to. There were a few things I liked, and the potential was there, but with more attention to detail and some actual chemistry between the two main characters, it could have been a lot better.

Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this book as much as I'd hoped to. There were a few things I liked, and the potential was there, but with more attention to detail and some actual chemistry between the two main characters, it could have been a lot better.

The one area where this book really excelled is with the banter between Zoe and Grant. Chris Cannon wrote some great snarky and funny scenes between the two of them, which had me snort-laughing from time to time. I also really enjoyed Zoe's friendship with Delia. The two of them kind of reminded me of myself and my best friends in high school. These positives weren't enough to get me to fall in love with this book, though.

The plot meandered a lot. There were things that happened or were mentioned that didn't serve a purpose, like the whole cake baking fundraiser thing. I liked that Zoe was working together with Delia on something, and that they seemed to take this project seriously, but in the end, there was no real reason for any of it to be in the book.

There were also a lot of details that needed to be fleshed out more. For example, Zoe and Delia transfer to this exclusive private school in their junior year. If they really are "hicks" - the book's description, not mine - then how can their families afford it? Zoe's father and grandfather died in a car accident, so how can her mom and grandmother keep the farm running? Do they even live on a farm? That's the impression I was given, but then what do they grow? And why doesn't Zoe ever have to help out? Zoe's grandmother had some cute moments, but what does she do other than crochet and shoot stuff off the back porch?

And as far as the connection between Zoe and Grant? I just couldn't buy into it, at all. I was more interested in Delia's growing relationship with Aiden than I was with whatever was going on with the two main characters, and you know that's a bad sign when the best friends are more interesting than the main players! I'll be honest, I didn't really like Grant all that much. I thought Zoe could do better. I didn't want them to end up together, and isn't that supposed to be the point of a romance novel?

My Entangled Teen obsession might start to become a problem. All of the books from their House are adorable and tell a story that I love reading. Don’t expect them all to be light, but The Boyfriend Bet had that wonderful quality.

Remember Nathan Scott from Season 1 of One Tree Hill? Grant Evertide was basically Nathan Scott from the first two episodes—the one that flirted with all the girls, had some questionable choices, and dark hair and amazing eyes. I tried to figure out why I liked him so much from the beginning, even though he had the tendency to be a jerk, and that was why. I saw the redeemable side of him, so did Zoe Cain. Grant told half of the story, and being inside of his head, figuring out how he navigated through life, kept me entertained. There were moments when I wanted to strangle him, and there were moments that I wanted to hug him.

Zoe was unique and uber sarcastic. She also wanted to prove her brother, Jack, wrong no matter what it took. The book began with a bang in order for her to grate Jack’s nerves, and color me surprised when Grant got roped into her antics in the first couple of paragraphs. I loved her spunk and refusal to conform to the norm. She already stood out being a “hick,” one who transferred to the private school in town for junior and senior year, surrounded by those that had been there since freshmen year. She showed everyone that she was much more than that. Zoe liked to bake, and had a knack for it, she enjoyed killing zombies, and she didn’t shy away from threatening someone with one of the many shotguns in her arsenal. Yeah, she had spunk. Just try not to like her.

Zoe and Grant’s relationship started as a way to get on Jack’s nerves, but her relationship with her best friend, Delia, was pure. Delia had crazy hair and a larger-than-life personality. She and Zoe went together like peanut butter and jelly, different from each other but complimentary. I would love for her to have her own book, especially considering her budding romance with Aiden.

Grant and Zoe had a strange relationship. I didn’t doubt for a second that Grant was not using her, which made me pause when I thought about the title. The actual boyfriend bet proposed in the book was kind of thrown out there randomly, and I didn’t get how it played such a central role in the plot. Grant and Aiden kind of mentioned idea one day, but it was never the focus like I had anticipated. Nevertheless, I enjoyed how that tiny conversation sort of played as catalyst for Grant and Zoe’s connection. Though, to be honest, they had something undeniable. They were an unlikely pair like I’ve never seen before. Cannon touched the rich boy/peasant girl troupe but didn’t focus on it. I loved that! They had class distinctions, but the main issue was that Grant just couldn’t commit the way he (much to his chagrin) and Zoe wanted him to. Money played a role, as did appearance, but it didn’t drown everything else out.

Light, airy, and hilarious, The Boyfriend Bet pleased my romance-loving soul. The kisses were steamy, detention became a thing of romance, and the intricacies of baking kept things sweet. Even though this is the second in a series, you don’t have to start at book one. I have no idea what book one is even about and still enjoyed this one. Get your copy as soon as possible, because as I said multiple times while reading, this story is cah-uttte!

Zoe, this books heroine, is the reason I stopped reading YA books. I can't stand heroines like her. She was an immature drama queen who had so much potential at first but ruined everything in the process. She was trying to do something good like being mad at Grant, but her eyes were searching the room for him and he was making her melt. I don't like heroines who forget everything because a guy is hot. She should have gone and get rid of him, but nooooooooooo she was too weak to resist him. Girls Zoe, this books heroine, is the reason I stopped reading YA books. I can't stand heroines like her. Also I felt like she was a very manipulative person and I didn't like it.

Usually, the heroes in YA books have better personalities, but Grant was borderline abusive. And that comes from a person who didn't give a second thought about the relationship on Fifty shades of grey. Zoe should have let go of Grant when he was checking out a blonde while he was on a date with her (that happened in the 68% mark in the book). I couldn't believe that after he had so many doubts about her, left her deal with his ex on her own, did nothing to prove Zoe's brother wrong, was flirting with half the towns population and many other things he was accusing Zoe of not trusting him. I believed that he had done because he gave me no reason to trust him. He started a fight with Zoe on their date so he could go for the blonde. And he was acting super jealous when Zoe was talking to some guy. but when two girls (i think they were blonde too) sat at Zoe's chair and talked to him when she was in the bathroom and spoke badly to her when she returned, spoke to him it was ok. You know what he said to Zoe? He liked that one of the two girls showed interest in him because he liked her a couple of years ago. And he defended them when they said some awful things to Zoe because she didn't have the money they had. Zoe is a not rich farm girl and Grant comes from money so their way of thinking comes from two different worlds. Grant kept thinking which kind of girl is the best for him and Zoe never fit the bill. I couldn't believe it when he mentioned how hot his ex was with her new haircut. Zoe should have thrown him out and moved on to someone better.

All the characters main and minor seem to have very colorful personalities which threw me a little off. Usually, books have one or two characters with the kind of personality these people had. From Grant's friend to Grant's dad, to Zoe's friend, these people were not exactly my definition of normal. I just couldn't believe so many people with so many unique personalities and ways of living would live in the same town.

To sum it up, this book wasn't for me and I won't be recommending it. I am not sure if someone else will like it, so I would suggest to read it from the library. I hope Zoe's friend will be the one to get a book next because I want to read her story. ...more

This book tackled the ever confusing and complicated issue of high school dating. You know...where rumours and gossip are abundant and status and opinions mean everything. In The Boyfriend Bet there was Zoe who was a local and considered a "hick", and Grant who was the popular "rich snob." It wasn't hard to see that they were complete opposites yet there was an underlying attraction from the very beginning. Of course, in high school it could never be as easy as two people liking each other. There are always outside influences and over thinking brains to contend with.

My initial thoughts were that this book was really cute. I liked that Zoe had spunk and what appeared to be a strong personality. She seemed like a no nonsense kind of girl. I wasn't sure about Grant but I was hopeful that Zoe would be a good influence on him. As the story progressed I have to admit that Zoe lost some of her appeal for me and I continued to be unsure of Grant. Zoe went from strong and quirky to a little whiny and a bit of a push over. Grant continued to make mistake after mistake and she would continuously get mad and then forget it. I completely understand that this is typical teenage angst but Grant was a real jerk on numerous occasions. It made it difficult for me to route for the two of them because I kept thinking that she could do better.

Perhaps I was over thinking the whole story. I remember what it was like to be in high school and how the simplest things could be complicated and cause drama. This book really showcased that and how difficult the dating game can be at that age. I didn't always agree with Zoe's actions and rarely ever agreed with Grant's but as a whole I think it was a pretty accurate depiction of the complicated thing known as high school dating.

Well...huh... So I started this book and I was just thrilled!! I was LOVING it! I thought Zoe was so sassy and snarky, and I loved the bantering interplay between her and Grant. Honestly I was smiling and laughing all the time. I know Zoe was a bit dramatic, but honestly I just thought she had a bit of a temper and was a bit over the top. She and her BFF Delia was so much fun.

But somewhere along the way it started to lose a little bit of the sparkle. Honestly, Grant was not book boyfriend material. We got less and less of his POVs as the book went on, and quite frankly he just never seemed that enamoured with Zoe. It was like he was intrigued, but he kept weighing pros and cons about being with her, but there was no overall excitement, or just *want* to be with her. I never felt it. I enjoyed it in the beginning a bit more, but I expected things to develop, and for him to be maybe confused b/c he didn't want a girlfriend, but Zoe made him feel differently. I just didn't get that at all.

And while Zoe's reactions were a bit over the top, quite frankly I got why she was upset in so many of the instances...she just liked being dramatic in her reactions, but the base reason for being upset was valid in my opinion. And so I was not impressed with how the last bit played out where Grant accused her of not trusting him, even though he hadn't earned that trust through past experiences, and she ended up being the one to apologize and make amends. Did NOT work for me.

And then the end just wrapped up super fast, I didn't buy their relationship development at ALL, I didn't even buy that Grant wanted to be with Zoe. And quite frankly, I thought Zoe could do better. So my reading experience went from a 4 to a 3.5 rounded up to 4, to a me being generous and still giving it 3.5 but rounding down to 3. Major bummer b/c it started off SO well. ...more

While some of the tropes used in this book are different from those of her earlier romantic comedy, there are several similarities. First, while this book takes place about 45 minutes away from the setting of the previous book, it is in the same world. This was my first read by Chris Cannon and I enjoyed it a lot! This book follows Zoe and Grant as they experience high school while battling their different views on relationships.

Soooo....this was the definition of an unhealthy relationship. And that's saying something coming from me since I also read romances with trigger warnings.

Zoe is a doormat manic pixie girl with violent tendencies that should come with a future stalker warning. Grant is a slimy arrogant douchebag who treats his date like shit more than once because other girls rate higher than her and gets offended when she doesn't trust him.

Zoe Cain is brash, somewhat unsteady, and very stubborn. So when her brother warns her away from Grant Evertide, Zoe does the only logical thing she can think of: she kisses him. Because, who wouldn’t, right? And of course she likes it because, again, who wouldn’t, right? What follows is The Boyfriend Bet, Chris Cannon’s second contemporary romance, is a light, airy, funny read. I read it over the course of two evenings, and it was such a nice break from the heavier YA paranormal I usually read.

Zoe Cain is brash, somewhat unsteady, and very stubborn. So when her brother warns her away from Grant Evertide, Zoe does the only logical thing she can think of: she kisses him. Because, who wouldn’t, right? And of course she likes it because, again, who wouldn’t, right? What follows is the story of Zoe and Grant’s on-again, off-again relationship.

The Boyfriend Bet is filled my very favorite thing that Chris Cannon writes: snark. Lots and lots of snark. Zoe and Grant have great chemistry and I spent a lot of time snorting in amusement while reading. Zoe is a whirlwind. There were so many scenes where I thought, What the hell is she doing? As Grant so eloquently put it, “On the positive side, Zoe was fun, and she made me smile. On the negative side, she was a drama queen who jumped to conclusions and threatened to shoot me on more than one occasion.” I love that Zoe didn’t take anyone’s bull; she knew who she was and was comfortable in her own skin, and if people didn’t like that, well then too bad. She had a great, healthy relationship with her best friend Delia (by the way, Chris Cannon, I’m hoping Delia’s story is next!), and it felt like it was the two of them against the world.

Grant was sweet and caring. There were times when I definitely felt for him, because I’m pretty sure Zoe rocked his world. He was also a ginormous idiot in a few instances, to the point where I thought, no way does he deserve her. Like, at all. But that all worked itself out and by the end of the book he grew a spine. I loved his best friend, Aiden, who was so completely and unapologetically weird. He was the perfect foil for Grant.

There were so many funny scenes, and some fantastic one-liners. I lost myself in the story and was back in high school home ec (although, I’ll tell you, I did not have a stud for a home ec partner!). I had a grin on my face for most of the story and again, it was such a nice treat to read the book version of a romantic comedy, in lieu of my usual YA PNR.

My only reason for not rating the book five stars is because I wanted a bit more. I felt there were some areas that could have been fleshed out more. For example, there is tragic backstory that was the catalyst for the entire story. We get bits and pieces but we never get the full explanation for what happened. I would have loved more scenes of Zoe at home with her family, which probably would have helped with understanding that backstory. Her brother Jack and her mother were sort of ships in the night, flitting in and out, and I would have really loved some more scenes with them (especially where Jack and Zoe weren’t fighting), because I felt like we didn’t get enough of a chance to know them. It would have also been nice to have the bake sale be a bigger event, since they were working throughout the whole story to find a design to sell. But these are minor details and truly, I just love Chris Cannon’s writing so much that I want more of it!

I literally read it in two sittings, because I just couldn’t put it down. Very, very rarely does a book do that to me, but it did! And I loved every page, and more often than not I wanted to bash Zoe and Grant’s heads against one another because never before in the contemporary YA universe (seriously, I challeng You guys! I have found my new favourite book and this is it! To prove to you how good it is, let me tell you this: I started it in the bath, and finished it before bed on the same night. I literally read it in two sittings, because I just couldn’t put it down. Very, very rarely does a book do that to me, but it did! And I loved every page, and more often than not I wanted to bash Zoe and Grant’s heads against one another because never before in the contemporary YA universe (seriously, I challenge you to give me a more matched couple) have two people been more perfect for each other. NOT EVEN BELLA AND EDWARD, ignoring completely the fact Twilight isn’t contemporary, but you get my drift, yes?
The start of this book is like doing 0-60MPH in a Ferrari, it’s lightning fast, with Zoe and Grant kissing on like the first page, or at the very latest page two. All to annoy Zoe’s brother, Jack, which is genius and kind of threw me for a second, because it all seemed very insta-love for a minute or two, until Grant very firmly stuck his feet in his mouth, with his not-wanting-a-girlfriend spiel. I mean Grant, get your head together, you idiot. And so starts a thoroughly entertaining read as two people who are totally soulmates fight this at every. single. turn. Yep, every turn. Like, all the time. If Grant isn’t putting his foot into something, Zoe’s blowing up and it’s so entertaining. Like roll your eyes, but love it anyway entertaining because you just have no clue what will happen next. Will Zoe *actually* shoot Grant? WHO KNOWS. But she has guns! So it’s possible…

I’ve just never been so entertained in my whole life. Or in a while at least. This is the kind of book you dive into after a horrible day, and you just get to leave the real world behind for a few hours, and it just completely sucks you in. You just have to keep reading, and it’s amazing, and it just gets better and better and better, because Zoe is absolutely amazing. I loved her hot-headedness, her inability to listen, the way she wanted to irritate her brother Jack at every turn, and Grant was a good foil for her, if a bit stupid a time or two and deserving of a smack, but Zoe never let him get away with it, she always called him on his stupid things.

This was just the absolute perfect read that I needed right in the moment. It’s the kind of book you don’t really want to end, and those are just the best kinds of books. I really, really, really loved The Boyfriend Bet and I am going to annoy Chris Cannon (not really, because that’s weird) to give me a book with Delia and Aiden because oh my God, those two are screaming out to have their stories told. The little tidbits we got of something budding between them in The Boyfriend Bet was NOT ENOUGH. I need more. I crave more. GIVE ME MORE. In the meantime, I shall go and read the first Boyfriend Chronicle book which seems to be completely unrelated to this one? But hopefully just as fun. But read this book, it is ace. ...more

I tried, I really did... But this is just crap

I'm not sure what agegroup she's targeting, but I'm thinking >12 years.

The story is about a couple from different classes in society with different goals and her brother hates him and....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz sorry, I feel asleep typing that. Just figured I was describing all the other YA novels I had already reviewed.

This was fun at times, and very appropriately YA Romance, but I had a hard time buying the relationship between Grant and Zoe. Zoe was a seriously melodramatic drama queen who went crazy over the smallest of things. At the beginning of this, I loved her confidence and sass, and the banter between her and Grant. But then, all of that confidence disappeared.

If you want a quick and adorable read - this is it.
Set in high school, Grant and Zoe start a relationship that will knock you off your chair laughing.

Perfect for teens who want to have a good laugh because it was hilarious , from the grandmother to the extra characters- there was never a dull moment.

I am looking forward to the next installment, hopefully it is Aidan, Dalia and Zoe's brother in that next book. ;)

All the back and forth between the couple was super annoying. I don't think they got together until 94% because Grant didn't want to commit...And the bet wasn't even a big part in the plot at all.
