The New American Nation Series

Era of Theodore Roosevelt

Rate this book
In this readable, incisive book, Professor Mowry deals with an era whose political scene was clearly dominated by the colorful and dynamic Theodore Roosevelt. From the last decade of the nineteenth century through the Taft administration, the forces of change fought entrenched conservatism--a battle which waxed and waned according to the temper of the times and the ability of reform leaders to arouse the public against the trusts and the financiers.Bryan and his followers on the Democratic side, and the implacable Progressive La Follette on the other, could not stem the established Republican tide or negotiate successfully with the conservatives who controlled Congress and dominated the big cities, and the railroad and banking worlds.Theodore Roosevelt possessed both the popularity and the political acumen to win the affection of the people, sense the extent of their desire for reform from one moment to the next, and alternately conciliate and outmaneuver the big financiers and the Congressional leaders to get his legislation through. During a period when immigration, the Panama Canal, and the Russo-Japanese War were problems, he handled foreign affairs with little interference. This book sets the many facets of Theodore Roosevelt's political philosophy and his actions against the ferment of that time and the men who fought or supported him. Providing a much needed reevaluation of the forces and personalities, the successes and failures, of an important era, the book is a notable achievement.

A HUGE dose of politics, but, most of it was actually pretty interesting. I was amazed at just how interesting it was. It really transported me to the political world of the early 20th century. Now I'm on the lookout for a book about the daily life of this era ....
