It was praised for its love story between a heroine and hero divided by age and social status, and for its depiction of military structures. Although she is a light novelist, her books from her second work onwards have been published as hardbacks alongside more literary works with Arikawa receiving special treatment in this respect from her publisher, MediaWorks. Shio no Machi was also later published in hardback. Her 2006 light novel Toshokan Sensō (The Library War) was named as Hon no Zasshi's number one for entertainment for the first half of 2006, and came fifth in the Honya Taishō for that year, competing against ordinary novels.

Like I said before, it's only getting better.

(Si ce n'est pas déjà fait, vous seriez inspirés de lire celles-ci d'abord car je vais me contenter d'écrire dans la continuité des précédents tomes.)
Pour une série découverte tard, et à une période où j'ai de plus en plus de mal à avoir des "coup de cœur", c'est un petit miracle qui se confirme de tome en tome.
Ce tome-ci démarre avec un chapitre qui peut sembler assez éloigné de tous les problèmes de censure vu qu'on s'intéresse à une affaire de voyeurisme, mais au vu de la conclusion du tome précédent (rappel: Iku découvre enfin l'identité de son prince), on sait qu'il servira surtout à montrer les changements dans les relations des personnages.
Ensuite, on a un chapitre que j'ai trouvé super intéressant du point de vue des personnages car, étant centré sur un examen que doivent passer Iku, Tezuka et Shibasaki, ça permet de pousser un peu plus loin chacun d'eux. Et puis Tezuka a tellement changé depuis le moment où son personnage est introduit dans le premier tome que ce n'en est que plus plaisant.
Par contre, pour les chapitres suivants, on retourne au cœur du problème, avec un chapitre centré purement et simplement sur la censure même, puis deux chapitres consacrés à une nouvelle bataille entre le comité d'amélioration et les forces de défense des bibliothèques. Je dirais que ce sont les chapitres les plus intéressants jusqu'à maintenant. Même si chaque chapitre et volume précédent apporte une pierre à l'édifice, ici, on sent qu'on est à un point crucial. C'était déjà amorcé dans le tome précédent, mais là, ça devient de plus en plus politique. J'ai tellement hâte de voir où ça nous mène dans le volume final !
(D'ailleurs, petit aparté, j'ai trouvé ça intéressant de voir que les adaptations en films live étaient plutôt axées sur les diverses batailles, alors que les livres montrent énormément de choses différentes et les batailles sont justement plutôt expédiées en quelques pages. Ce qui fait que les deux formats sont super intéressants conjointement. J'ai ne demande qu'à voir ce qu'apporte le manga au tout !)

This volume just confirms how good this series is! It deals with quite a serious subject, but the characters' personalities make it lighter than it seems.
In this volume, we have a first chapter that serves to show how the conclusion from the previous volume (reminder: Iku finally discovers who her prince really is) changes the relationships between the characters. It uses a voyeurism case which seems kinda not so related to the whole censorship thing, but which actually allows less focus on it in favor of more focus on characters.
Then another chapter is also focused on characters, and more specifically Iku, Tezuka and Shibasaki as the three of them have to take an exam. I especially enjoyed how we could really see how far Tezuka came since the time he was first introduced in volume 1.
Finally, the rest of the book was back on topic, if I could say so. One chapter was purely and simply about censorship, and then the two others were another battle between the committee and the librarian forces. In my opinion, those were the most interesting chapters so far. Although each previous chapter and book played their part in some way, here, we can feel that we're reaching the climax. It started in the previous volume, but it's getting more and more political. I can't wait to see where this will lead us in the final volume!
(Also, slight digression: I found it interesting that the live-action movie adaptations were more focused on the battles, while in the books we see a wide variety of things and the battle are more like a couple of pages only. That makes both format interesting to be seen altogether. I'm looking forward to read the manga and see what it adds to the whole thing.)

Elle était sujette à des réactions imprévisibles, et ce fut là encore le cas : avant même de réfléchir, elle mordit la main qui la bâillonnait.Voilà, c'est une des choses que j'aime le plus dans cette série de livres. On traite d'un sujet plutôt sérieux, mais les personnalités des personnages permettent d'alléger le tout avec des passages (généralement les interactions entre Iku et Dojo) qui me font sans cesse me plier de rire.
« Aïe !
— Qu'avez-vous, l'équipe Dojo ?
— Rien du tout, répondit Komaki. Ce n'est que Dojo et Kasahara, une fois encore. Pas la peine de vous arrêter pour eux. »

Les relations et comportements des différentes organisations au sein de l'univers rendent cette fiction politique élaborée, mais elles n'empêchent pas à l'histoire de conserver un ton général léger.

今回も、少女漫画＋言論統制・表現の自由＋軍隊もの。
戦闘シーンは退屈で斜め読みしてしまうけれど(もしかしたら、ちゃんと読んだ方が登場人物たちの関係の変化がわかるのかもしれない…)、その他でもまぁまぁ面白い。
が、やはり、「正しい言葉」の名の下に言論統制を推し進める良化部隊(だっけ名前)との全面的な武力対決には違和感を感じざるを得ない。
それと、業務系(所謂文化系？)女子と、主人公達戦闘部隊(運動部系？)女子の対決も、なんだか書き割りのような、わかりやすい薄っぺらい構図…
続きが気になるから6巻まで読むつもりだけど、集中して、内容を吟味して読むべきものではないな。
読んでいる間にずっと感じている違和感がうまく言葉にできないけれど、とにかく、武力・暴力を無条件で美化・礼賛してるところが私は好きになれないんだろうな。分かりやすくない、根回し的な(政治的駆け引き)の方が、複雑だけど面白い。
問題のある美術品の展示に関する物語が出てきた時は、つい最近の「表現の自由展」を思い出した。
現実世界は幸いにも全面武力対決にならなかったけど、確か主催者側が自主的に展示を取りやめたよな…それと、名古屋の市長(愛知県知事？どっちか)が展示に反対して座り込みしたんだったっけか。
私は検閲には全面的に反対。だから、作者の「武力を持っても守る」というメッセージには、反対ではない。
けれど、何度も書くけど軍隊礼賛な感じが嫌なんだよな…
第３章を書く切っ掛けになったという、「軽度の放送禁止用語」問題。単行本版のあとがきを偶然先に読んでいたので、ますます興味深く読めた。こういう戦い方が好きだ。頭脳戦というか。
それと、文庫本版にあとがきに載っていた、このシリーズをアニメ化する際に、聴覚障害者の登場人物が出てくる回が放映されなかった話。物語で毬江が言っていた「障害を持っていたら物語の中でヒロインになれないんですか？」が現実になって、あながち「図書館戦争」の世界も全くの空想ではないんだなと感じた。気をつけないと、無関心でいると私たちの言論の自由が無くなりそう。
あと、児玉清との対談(第３弾らしい。はじめ2巻は単行本で読んだから、読めてない。文庫本借りなきゃ)。
フランスで、大衆作家で普通の葬式だったデュマの生誕200年祭に、フランス文化省が、デュマの棺を掘り起こして国葬された英雄が眠るパンテオンの地下に(そして1802年生まれで同時代人で国葬されたユゴーの隣に)収められた、という話は面白い。面白い作品を書く作家は、難しい本を書く作家より下に見られがちだけど、面白い小説こそ文学の歴史を担っている。
最後に本編には関係ないけれど、上記の対談で心に残った言葉：「全力を出さない人間は、夢を諦めることさえできない」
自分が傷つきたくない、力がないということを、思い知りたくない。砕け散って諦めるんじゃなくて、「力があったかもしれない」という状態で止めるという、逃げ。自分の中で、頭の中で、結果を勝手に先回りしてしまう。
↑私がまさしくこのタイプなので、気を引き締めようと思った。自覚するだけでも何か変わるかも。

E-book English translation by Melithiel. For the third book in the series out of four, this one delivered. The first two books really set up the society and character dynamics that I expected from reading the manga; however, this book packed the punch. Full of societal criticism, delicate character relationship growth, and a gruesome battle, I’m beyond stoked to read the final novel.

This book was definitely the best one yet. Maybe I'm just getting more sucked into the series, but I felt like the characters developed by leaps in this one. Of course we all love to see the deepening relationship between Iku and Dojo, but I am really enjoying the relationship between Tezuka and Shibasaki.
The politics in this series continue to fascinate me. I admit the resolution to the battle at Mito had me feeling emotional. So did the final scene of the book.
