The fact that this harrowing tale of life in the Soviet army is based on personal experience makes it all the more powerful. Tales from the Cold War can seem remote from our present fractured politics but this short novel os well worth a read as it reveals the depths to which humanity can sink in pursuit of survival.

I picked this up on a whim and it was awful. Badly written and very misogynistic.
