This book gets 5 stars for the simple fact that it kept me on my toes, kept me guessing, right until the end. I never knew which side was up. Every time I thought "Phew, that was close" or "Okay, road to HEA", some other messed up stuff happened and I was blindsided. By the time I finished this book, I realized that everything I thought I knew, I didn't.

This was the first book I ever read from Jamie Magee and it definitely won't be the last. Keep these coming girl! She's found a new fan in me!

This is not a book me or anyone can call beautiful. This book promised me a Dark romance, with very sensitive topics, and dare I say it completely delivers it. This was a first book I read by this author, and I am very very excited to read more, especially if her stories are like this.

This book follows the story of a 19 year old girl Ember, who was targeted by the underworld mobs because her father owned them a lot of money. That is when she literally runs into Slayt

This is the story of Ember and Slayton, two people having a click!

The book started and after 35 pages I was speechless with everything that was happening. The book was dark, raw and intense. There were almost no dialogues among the heroes and since the book was written from Ember’s POV (with a couple chapters from Slayton’s POV), I was left reading lots of thoughts, her thoughts. And it

"The truth is, there are no happy endings, only happy moments."

This is my first book by this author. The author had been recommended to me, so I took a chance.... and I'm so happy that I did.

I don't even know where to start with this. The blurb gives nothing away as to just how crazy this plot it. It has so many layers as the story unfolds. You think it's something, but it really is just so much more.

Jamie Magee's writing style... I can't say enough good things about it. She doesn't rush anyth

This Is the first book I have read by Jamie Magee and I am glad I did. Disengaged kept me on the edge of my seat. There was no predictability. The way Slayton and Ember were thrown together was intense. There was no lead up to it and then bam there he was and she went along with it! The first half there were so many questions and I was like "how does this happen". Magee didn't rush anything but kept you wondering the entire time. I was intrigued by the relationship and then finally we got some

Slayton Winslow aka "Slayer" comes into Ember Bloom's life like a wrecking ball. Literally no introductions. Just a hot kiss and a demand to get on his bike.
I had no clue what his intentions might be with her.
Was there love/lust?
Was he protecting her?
Was she payment or insurance for money owed?

As the story progressed, I felt like it was a combination of all of the above.

What I do know is that Ember initially came off as a weak heroine. She rarely challenges anything, and when she does, it's a ha

Dark, brutal and edgy yet completely beautiful at times...a must read!

I love the dark side, there is something about the depravity that draws me in but what I love even more is when there is something that makes a story stand out and makes you take notice. There was something about this story that did just that. The characters were unique in their own ways. Slayton; silent but deadly, calm yet completely unhinged and raw yet vulnerable. Ember; quiet and observant, a girl with a deep sense of lov

Actual Rating 3.5 stars!

Ember Bloom finds herself between a rock and a very corporeal 'hard place' in Jamie Magee's Disengaged. That rock being her degenerate father's astronomical gambling debts and 'drug world' ties.
The hard place...
Slayton Winslow...a person and story element that we will get back to later.

But for now we must discuss Ember and the insta-plot surrounding her.
This book goes from zero to everything within the first ten pages. There is no build, there is a scant allusion to the

The first half of the book I thought "what a tease", it was sweet and all but the 2nd half blew me out of the water. I honestly thought I was going to read a paranormal book, but no, this is as contemporary as you can get. I don't read a lot of contemporaries and I'm so glad I didn't know this was one or I may have passed over this one.

Another thing about this book, it's VERY GRAPHIC. One more reason I w

This is a dark and gritty journey into the world of the criminal underground and a story about how love can happen in even the darkest of places. I really enjoyed reading this one and felt an immediate connection with Ember from the moment she’s introduced. She’s lived a difficult life and every time I was sure things couldn’t get any worse, they did. By the time I finished reading this, I was able to watch Ember go from being a completely naive girl to a strong and fierce young woman who refuse ...more

After finishing “Disengaged” I decided to wait a few days before I started writing the review so that I could collect my thoughts and feelings regarding the characters and plotline. In some ways the waiting helped. In other ways it didn’t. I found that while I liked the book, the gritty story, the raw characters, pain-filled plot, I also found that I disliked all of it in certain aspects.

I found the character Ember too trusting and it got her in a lot of trouble, none that she learned from. Aft

I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I felt like I was watching a horror flick with the clueless chick who happens to walk into the wrong place. And I am screaming noooo don't go, but she never listens.

Ember upset me many times through the book due to her lack of awareness and common sense. Worse was her father and his selfishness that sucked her into a world that being clueless will get you killed. I also grappled to understand Slayton and why he would protect

This was my first novel by Jamie Magee. This dark romance is full of twists and turns. The first few chapters are like no book I have read before in that there is little dialogue and most of the story is all first person perspective inside our heroine's head. As the story unfolds we learn that Ember and our "hero" Slayton have crossed paths due to circumstances outside of her control. The connection between these characters is evident but there are many outside factors coming into play

There is only one word I can use to describe this book. Brutal! From page one right to the very last this story is hard to read. I have never read a book with these subjects in them before I honestly didn't read the blurb well enough as I got the biggest shock of my life when things start to go sideways. Saying that I couldn't put this book down I had guests over last night and was so rude and started reading while they were all watching a boxing match that's how much I wanted to finish this boo ...more

This was my first read for Jamie Magee and I was simply blown away. This book has all the stuff that keeps you reading and not stopping. Ember was raised by her grandmother in a small town; when her grandmother passes she then goes with her father who has barely been in her life. Ember is thrown into a world unlike the one she has lived in all her life with danger everywhere even at home with her dead beat father. Slayton enters Embers life like a very intense storm and in

Disengaged

Disengaged by Jamie Magee. I've never read this author before and took a chance by requesting this. Upon the first few chapters I was intrigued by the characters within this story. I wasn't completely enthralled though until the middle of the novel. I will go ahead and say this novel touches on some very sensitive subjects. It literally has a little bit of everything: drugs, sex trafficking, etc. I'll be honest, when I first started this book I thought it wasn't going to really grab me

I am all about reading suspense romance, but this book was hard for me to read. It was very intense and it often felt like there was too much going on to grasp what was going on through most of the book. If felt like Ember & Slayton's relationship was doomed from the start. The thing they see & go through are truly heartbreaking and I found myself hoping things would turn around for them. This is my first book to read by Jamie Magee and I loved it. I can't wait to read other books by this author. Disengaged is a dark romance with religious undertones in the crime world. The tension between the main characters in the beginning is just off the charts. However, you never really know how everything is going to play out. The world they are immersed in is dangerous, deadly and complicated. I loved how the plot played out and especial

This book was okay, but had the potential to be amazing. The beginning really kind of put me off, and it took me until the end to warm back up to the story. Jamie Magee jumps right into action as soon as the book starts, but the events were so disjointed and confusing that it takes a while to catch on to what exactly has happened. In a nutshell, the female MC, Ember, has been "kidnapped" by local bad boy Slayton. They don't know each other - have never met - but Ember seems perfectly content to
