Buddy read with the fantastic UF group over at BB&B.
I needed to be the man, not the monster.
Witches' Bane takes off right after the end of Hidden Blade. Ace suddenly has earned a new nickname “Godkiller” and he doesn’t know why seeing as he hasn’t as yet killed the god, Thoth, as promised to Osiris when they made a deal. And seeing as Osiris is the god that holds his curse, Ace knows that defying him isn’t an option. But Ace is just a Soul Eater, a mercenary, how is he supposed to kill a god?
As if that isn’t enough of a problem for Ace, witches are disappearing which normally wouldn’t concern him until he’s shown a severed witch’s arm with a strange hieroglyph, one that Ace just recently discovered. Ace is also struggling with his Soul Eater nature, his craving for souls growing and threatening to turn him back into the monster he was.
“What’s a god but a magically endowed epic asshole with a pedigree?”
In this instalment we are really shown just how broken Ace really is, how the darkness inside him threatens to consume him completely. And the power that Osiris and Isis has over him is definitely not helping him. I really hate that he has no free will when it comes to Osiris and after the devastating event that happened in the previous book , it makes me extremely uncomfortable that Ace can’t refuse him. I also especially don’t like that Ace suddenly has such a compelling sexual attraction to Isis and I’m pretty sure she has done something to him to cause this.
I really liked Cat, the new character introduced and I’m hoping we see a lot more of her in the next books. Shu was as wonderful as she was in the first book and I like the strange friendship between her and Ace, despite them believing they are enemies.
The plot was as intense and action-packed as the first book and I must say this author knows how to keep you captivated and glued to the pages. I like that we got to see a little of Ace’s past and given a hint of why he was banished from the underworld. My only complaint and it’s a personal issue, is that I get very uncomfortable when characters are forced to do things against their will, and this is something that happens a lot to Ace and I’m really worried how far this will be taken.
“Stop, or I’ll rip your tongue out, grind it into dust, and sprinkle it in my coffee.”
“What a shame he didn’t add a penis to this collection. The spells I can craft with fresh genitals…”
“You don’t know me. You were tied to me as punishment. You only knew me after I’d hunted you down and condemned you. I was your enemy. That’s all you knew when Osiris dragged you out of the damned and bound your soul to mine. I’ve always been your enemy, and that’s all you know today.”
“Five centuries and that’s what you still believe?”

"What's a god but a magically endowed epic asshole with a pedigree?"
"I don't have the pedigree. Besides, soul eaters aren't gods. We're the monsters the gods try to kick under their Persian rugs."
