Dost mi tu chybí editorská část, kde by nám nějaký chytrý pán popovídal, proč vybral zrovna ten a ten příběh.

I really love this series. This one in particular has a fantastic cover and a great selection of stories. Just a beautifully produced book, and I'm still puzzled by why the rest of them got cancelled. I wonder if the IDW contract got supplanted by the "Disney Masters" series by Fantagraphics. I love their Carl Barks treasuries, but every time I look at the "Masters" editions, I'm just not as hooked as I was by these beautiful "Timeless Tales."

Pretty much every comic in here is strong - interesting or funny or both. I love that we even get one from Iceland this time! And several in this volume are as good as Barks - which all Duck fans know is the highest praise you can give.

Funnily, there's one in here that seems pretty directly inspired by one of my all-time favorite comics - probably for nostalgic reasons, since it's part of a very battered comicbook I still own, and read a ton when I was a kid. "Vicious Cycles," published in Italy in 1966 and illustrated by the fantastic Romano Scarpa, has basically the same ending as "Bubbleweight Champ," written and illustrated by Carl Barks two years prior, in 1964. Barks did it better; if you didn't know his version, though, this one stands nicely on its own.

I also enjoyed Garvey Gull, a rail-hopping seagull friend of the nephews, and I got pretty attached to Fethry, who looks familiar but who I couldn't place. I actually wrote in my notes (I journal as I read): "I wish they'd include his origin comic, or give more backstory about where Fethry came from and what his basic personality and character motivation is supposed to be."

Lo and behold, editor David Gerstein came through with two pages of backstory, original sketches, and other information about Donald's sweet-hearted, bumbling cousin Fethry! I still would've liked more of this type of content in these volumes, because it adds another fascinating layer to an already wonderful experience.

I'm very much looking forward to receiving and reading the rest...that I could get my hands on, anyway. In my opinion, these collections are the best you can get after "the good duck artist" Carl Barks himself, and there's an additional layer of creativity that comes from artists and authors bringing fresh sources of inspiration from across the globe. It's really fun to see Donald jetting off to not just deserted islands and mysterious mountains, but to European settings that were familiar to creators who loved these Ducks just as much as Americans do.

That's the kind of world tour I enjoy, and it's fun to travel alongside some of my favorite characters.
