This December 10th marks the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, a very fine document praised by the Vatican and most of the world's nations. However, this year there is a push to include abortion as a fundamental right in the U.N. Declaration, a move which if passed, will cause the Catholic Church to withdraw its support from this otherwise fine document.

Of course you support the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. You probably know some of them. “All humans are born free and equal in dignity and rights”: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person”: "Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work." You’ve heard these, haven’t you, in one form or another? But do you know all thirty articles? Are you able to cite them and support them when you see, or hear of them being ignored? To celebrat

Of course, this is a classic now and many people refer to this document when they identify human rights violations. It is a "must read." But there are some troubling aspects to this document, especially because it is so widely referenced.
First, it is truly a declaration. That would be fine if it explained its reasoning and contained its scope. Unfortunately, it contradicts itself without explanation and the reader is left wondering how these declarations must be reconciled. For example, Article ...more

I do think this document was a step in the right direction. If this were a declaration of human rights for western/colonial states, I would have given it more stars. However as a universal document it falls short by only providing a colonial perspective on human rights. It is time for us to create a universal declaration of human rights that takes every Culture's perspective equally. The Bangkok Declaration is a step towards that. If we keep working towards a more equitable world, we might get m

"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."
Quibble with human beings: does this include the retarded? There are those born without reason or conscience. This declaration has a simplistic view of humanity. A nice thing is "born free and equal" instead of "are ... equal in dignity and rights" which would be absurd, and is the Swedish dogma.

If more people actually followed these the world would be a better place to live.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was written following World War Two by the United Nations. It is instrumental in laying out many of the rights every person should have in the hopes of preventing the terrible violations and conditions of the war. From genocide to slaughter on the battlefield, the war was an experience no one wanted to repeat. While wars and genocides unfortunately still go on in the world, countries are now better equipped with a solid, agreed-upon set of decisions to s

I decided to dig out this gem (Universal Declaration for Human Rights for those who don't speak French. French? Let's say it's French.) First published on December 10, 1948, it is rather disturbing that not all articles hold true, even within the U.S.A. Equal pay for equal work? Yeah, still fighting about that one. Under Barack Obama's leadership, marriage was made legal for all consenting adults, but seeing as how the new White House webpage was scrubbed of all references to the lgbtq community

Utopia
they should teach this in schools to prepare humans who are aware of their responsibility towards one another and their rights as civilians in nation states. maybe with the culmination of this sort of mentality and outlook the utopia will turn into a reality.
this is more sacrosanct than any other holy book.

If you haven't read this thirty point declaration you should do so. As noted in Wikipedia,'the Declaration forms part of customary international law & is a powerful tool in applying diplomatic & moral pressure to governments that violate any of its articles.'
