Once a professional juggler and fire eater, Tom Taylor is a #1 New York Times Bestselling, multi-award-winning comic book writer, playwright and screenwriter.
Well known for his work with DC Comics and Marvel, Taylor is the co-creator of NEVERLANDERS from Penguin Random House, SEVEN SECRETS from Boom Studios and the Aurealis-Award-winning graphic novel series THE DEEP. Taylor is also the Head Writer and Executive Producer of The Deep animated series, four seasons of which is broadcast in over 140 countries.
He is perhaps best known for the DC Comics series, DCEASED (Shadow Awards Winner), NIGHTWING (nominated for 5 Eisner Awards), SUPERMAN: SON OF KAL-EL (GLAAD Award Nominee), INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US, SUICIDE SQUAD, EARTH 2 and BATMAN/SUPERMAN as well as Marvel's FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN, ALL NEW WOLVERINE, X-MEN: RED, DARK AGES and SUPERIOR IRON MAN. Taylor is also the writer of many Star Wars series, which include STAR WARS: INVASION and STAR WARS: BLOOD TIES (Stan Lee Excelsior Award winner). Taylor has written for Marvel, DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing, Boom Studios, Wildstorm, 2000 AD and Gestalt Comics.
This is the second book in a row where the main title – “All-New Wolverine” – has been ironically undermined by the subtitle: Civil War II in the last book, Enemy of the State II in this; “All-New” my bum! It’d be nice if Marvel’s writers could come up with original storylines instead of relying on rehashing old classics but that’s just not Marvel’s (or DC’s for that matter) style – unimaginativeness is the watchword!
So, like Mark Millar’s Enemy of the State, Tom Taylor’s third “Wolverine” book starring X-23/Laura Kinney has Laura being used as a mindless weapon by villains – can she fight back against her programming, blah blah yadda yadda ya etc.
As you can tell from my subtly dismissive tone I wasn’t impressed with this one. Besides being derivative and predictable, this is yet another story about Wolverine’s Weapon X past, an archetypical Wolverine storyline at this point, whose only variation is that “Wolverine” has lady parts. The villain’s reveal and motivation were weak and the artwork was low quality, rushed-looking and bland at best.
The idea of Laura as a mass murderer was an intriguing premise while it lasted, some of the action scenes are cool and it’s not badly written, but it’s a largely forgettable and unengaging book. Check out the original Enemy of the State instead for a far more intense, exciting read.
I really wasn't enjoying this one to start with but it pulled its socks up a bit at the very end, clawing its way (see what I did there?) up to a 3 star rating from the 2 stars I had been planning on giving it. Just.
This is only Enemy of the State II in that SHIELD is hunting Laura. It's much more Laura finally dealing with her past, her awful childhood and putting it behind her. Kudos to Tom Taylor for bringing back X-23's past without being derivative. I loved that Taylor also brought back an old Wolverine foe from his Patch days.
The story is undermined some from the shoddy, rushed art from Nik Virella and Djibril Morrisette-Phan. Marvel, why do you seem to use so many of your books now as tryout books for new artists? How about you pay for good artists and let these newbies establish their art on their own comics before giving them a book.
Tom Taylor has truly made All-New Wolverine a character piece. This story is all about Laura, and the lovely side cast, that mold her into who she truly is now.
Wolverine is trying to get away from the city with Gabby. Too much bad has happened. We find out about a gas that makes Laura go nuts and feral. She is infected with it when she goes into town and "kills" a bunch of people. She is then on the run. Other characters come in, and we begin to dive deeper into the broken nature of the young wolverine. By the end it comes to a personal, dark choice, that forms her into the one we know as Wolverine today.
Good: The art is a improvement and much smoother this volume. I also really enjoyed the character growth here. Watching Laura come to realize who she is, what she is, it worked really well. I also still love Gabby and she remains the humor without feeling forced.
Bad: The story's pacing gets a bit wonky and not as well as previous volumes. With the Enemy of the State 2 headline you're expecting more crazy action. It's not.
Overall I really still love this series. While the last volume remains my favorite of the run this still holds high up. A very high 3.5 is what this deserves but I'll bump it to 4 since it's been so damn fun. Keep it up Tom!
This series began to feel routine with this volume, and for the first half it was only a pleasant sort of diversion albeit with some informative backstory for Laura "All-New Wolverine" Kinney. However, once Laura and kid sister Gabby board the 'pirate ship' things take a turn for the better. (Oddly, I think it was Gabby's obvious but then sly use of humor in conversations that finally brought the story to life.) The action also cranks up to a fiercer level, guest stars make effective appearances, and the finale was tidy without being treacly. So it's one of those "keep reading - it gets better" books.
Tom Taylor has a good thing going here. Good story telling, new characters introduced with some cool story arcs developing and ending. Gambit makes an appearance which was probably the best part. Didnt excite me as much as the previous Volumes but still very good.
YOU KNOW WHAT THIS FUCKER DID? HE DID WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE AND HE FUCKING DID IT WELL!
YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE? HE WENT BACK TO THE SOURCE MATERIAL AND HE BROUGHT IN SHIT THAT NEEDED TO BE DEALT WITH.
WHEN I STARTED THIS BOOK I WAS ALL LIKE "OH HERE WE GO AGAIN, BECAUSE THIS IS THE ONLY POSSIBLE PLOT LAURA LENDS HERSELF TO AND IT'S NOT LIKE IT'S BEEN DONE TO DEATH" AND THEN GAMBIT SHOWED UP AND I WAS LIKE "WAIT... ARE YOU DOING SOMETHING GOOD HERE? BECAUSE NO ONE REMEMBERS HOW IMPORTANT GAMBIT IS TO LAURA" AND THEN IT BECAME CLEAR WHAT WAS HAPPENING AND I STARTED TO FUCKING CRY.
THIS NEEDED TO BE DONE. THIS HAS NEEDED TO BE DONE FOR YEARS, AND HE DID IT WITHOUT KILLING THE PEOPLE LAURA LOVES.
THE RELIEF IS SO REAL. NO ONE CAN EVER USE THAT PLOT LINE FOR HER EVER AGAIN I CANNOT EVEN I LITERALLY CAN'T. PEOPLE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO ACTUALLY COME UP WITH PLOT IDEAS FOR HER NOW I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT!
I think the only problem I have with this is that he's not good at quiet moments. I would have loved a moment. This changes everything for Laura, and Gambit is one of her very best friends (whom she hardly ever sees), and I would have loved for them to have a moment. Also, it would have been good to have Jubilee there, but at least Gambit was there.
OMG HE CALLED HER PETITE AGAIN, I MISSED THAT RELATIONSHIP SO MUCH!
EDIT: I LITERALLY JUST NOTICED THE TITLE OF THIS BOOK. GOD-FUCKING-DAMMIT, TAYLOR!!!!!!
It pretty much starts with Laura getting the trigger concoction that makes her kill anyone and she goes Berserk and well its related to her origins and the coming of Kimura and what happens when she is in hiding in a town named Daylesville and she is infected there and then the usual coming of Shield and her captured and then by Kimura and we know of her plans and then her going to Tyger Tiger and being given a mission to take her out and then how her friends rescue her sort of and a big evolution for her.. from her origins and its an insane moment and maybe a final solace for her?
Its an amazing volume and like brings the character of Laura from X-23 to Wolverine like she doesn't have to be a weapon and I love the way Taylor takes the elements of her origin and also the EOTS storyline and makes it work in a profound manner and gives Laura an amazing moment with her sister and later on cousins and a terrific ending to her long time arch nemesis in Kimura and a heroic journey to her and Gabby and this evolves their character so much! I loved this whole thing and the art is gorgeous and it makes for a quick read and that just tells you how good it is so yeah a must recommend!

I can't believe this is the same writer that writes the awful Injustice books...
World: The art is great, I like Lopez way more than Virella, but it's still pretty great. The sense of motion is not there for this book but the best part are the characters and how they emote, it's beautiful. The world building, wow what can I say, this is really a full circle arc all they way back to Innocence Lost by Kyle and I loved every bit of the world. Taylor has built a nice little piece of the MU for Laura and now with her past crashing into it, it's just great.
Story: I loved this story, because the tone is great. I like that this Wolverine book is not doom and gloom and grumpy and brooding. Rather, it's full of life, full of quirks and just puts a smile on your face. The story is well paced, calls back to the origin of Laura and does not let go. This arc is truly full circle and the story with Kimura is dealt with in a satisfying manner. I felt the end was a bit rushed but still it was pretty fantastic. The quiet moments were great and Taylor really leaned into the relationships which is awesome. I loved this arc, it moved me to tears.
Characters: Laura is so well done, so fully formed and still growing I love it. Gabby is just pure magic and gives Laura a softer side which is great her line in the last issue to Laura...tears. Kimura is just an obstacle but what an obstacle I loved it.
I can't say enough about this and I can't gush enough or I will ruin the story, this is just the story that Laura fans have been waiting for since issue one of Kyle's run.
This entire volume deals with an issue from Laura's past: apparently there is a "trigger scent" that when exposed to it, Laura will go into "berserker" mode, killing anything and everyone around her. Someone has obtained it and has been using it. This puts her up against SHIELD.
I really am starting to like her sister Gabby. Very likable and funny.
The art is less than stellar and undercuts how important this story is to Laura's growth.
I mentioned in my review for volume 1 how Tom Taylor is using continuity really well, and this volume turns that up to eleven as all of Laura's worst nightmares come back to haunt her. This is billed as Enemy Of The State II, but it's definitely its own story, as Kimura uses trigger scent to send Wolverine on a rampage, so she then finds herself in the sights of not just SHIELD, but her boyfriend, her old mentor Gambit, and the entire population of Madripoor.
The conclusion to this arc is so cathartic, especially having read so much X-23 material recently. It's so well thought out, and it's exactly the kind of ending that a story like this needs. Without spoiling it, it's definitely a new day for Laura on the other side of this story.
The art is split between Nik Virella and Djibril Morrisette-Phan, who have extremely similar styles. They're both quite simplistic in their character designs, but they work wonders with emotional beats, and the fact that colourist Michael Garland is present on all six issues unifies their visuals too. I'd like to get back to a more defined look for this series, but they have their strengths that are on display here.
If you've read any of X-23's older material, this will be a delight. And even if you're only just now reading All-New Wolverine, this story feels like an event in itself. 3 volumes in a row with 5 star ratings. I repeat: bloody hell, that was good.
I read the comic books All New Wolverine #1-18 covering the first three volumes, of which this is one. The mature feel of this character has now been solidly removed leaving the book with a much younger feel and audience(?).... and yet bizarrely they then have an 'Enemy Of The State II' in this volume, which feel s a bit misplaced. :-) 6 out of 12, but the weakest volume so far.
I found this to be a perfect X-23/Wolverine book. I love Laura, Gabby, (Jonathan!), and stories about flawed superheroes trying to be better/do better. I especially love the inclusion of Warren & Remy in issues #17 & #18. Love Warren's earnest face (and firey wings (how'd he get those again?) & Remy's can of beans lol. I'd love to see more of Laura & Warren together.
So this is NOTHING like the first Enemy of the State, and that is great! I was worried it was going to be a retread of that original Wolverine story. Instead, this is a tale of Laura trying to overcome her greatest fears and to move beyond her programming. This is a personal story, instead of an over the top killfest. x-23 is one of my top ten favorite Marvel characters. More of this, please!
The trigger arc, once again. Frustrating as hell, TBH which is why this is the weakest volume even if I love whenever it's about Laura Kinney, obvs
-------------------------------
'You just had this image ready to go, Kimura? How long do you spend on villainous presentations?'
Laura about anything and everything: Fuck it, I'll do it.
Oh my god, this got so fucking intense I wasn't prepared and then ALL of the Laura/Gabby moments pretty much did me in.
I'm actually slightly conflicted because despite this being an arc with some great moments, there are others that are simply underwhelming and knowing that it's a re-do of the original Enemy of the State arc is kinda frustrating because argh, can we let Laura be her own Wolverine now? How about now?
However, I'll admit that this arc has been in the making for quite some time and anyone who's been reading this series knows that. That said, it's also probably the weakest so far in the series since it's basically a rehash of Laura's time in the lab and her subsequent clashes with Kimura. Kimura who has been a thorn in Laura's side and I have never understood why but I'm glad it was finally dealt with. See why I'm conflicted? I mean, there just seems to be a load of lost opportunity here in terms of execution even though I fucking loved the panels with Laura, Jean Grey and Pinocchio and Gambit being back which hell yessss.
I JUST WISH WE COULD HAVE EXPLORED MORE OF THAT. GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT, MARVEL.
Lastly, I didn't love the art like I was so far. The coloring gave everyone's skin this weird pallor that I'm decidedly not a fan of. It got better in the latter issues, though.
Taylor's Wolverine continues to excel, in large part because he continues to go back to Laura's continuity. So this one, for example, focuses on her trigger scent, but also touches back on her past relationships with Tyger Tiger, with Gambit, and with Angel.
But Taylor's Wolverine also excels because he's willing to offer up plots that are big and important to Laura and that create real change. Finally, he's also able to portray very important moments of character growth. This newest volume has all of these elements.
Closer to 4.5 stars for me, but there were occasional moments here and there that were so great that I upgraded it to the higher rating.
The story isn’t as engaging as the previous two installments, and the art is a major step down. It’s still okay, but the tonal shift to darker stuff, like the murder of an entire town, is a bit much. Previously we were rescuing squirrels, and I was expecting more of that.
All-New Wolverine, Volume 3: Enemy of the State II is a very strong continuation of X-23's story as she bears the burden that is the name "Wolverine". And in this book that name is quite a burden; Laura has committed a terrible crime - one that goes against everything she believes in - so she is simultaneously avoiding authorities and seeking revenge.
This is a retelling of a classic Wolverine story. I definitely don't think that every story should be a retelling (and it happens too often, with Marvel), so I understand the criticisms that there is no new substance in Enemy of the State II. Since I haven't read the original Enemy of the State, though, I was left with nothing but enjoyment and surprise for this retelling. We get some sweet moments between Laura and Gabby, plus some incredible redemptive moments for both of them as well.
There are also some genuinely surprising plot twists - ones which didn't feel like cop-outs or deus ex machinas. That's nice, coming from a superhero story.
I'm very sad to already hear rumblings that Logan is coming back to reclaim his mantle. I have really loved following X-23, and one would think Marvel would want to continue cashing in on her recent and very successful movie.
Seasoned fans of X-23, rejoice! This trade returns the trigger scent, longstanding bane of X-23's existence, as well as an unwelcome face from her past. Writer Tom Taylor shows that he truly understands these characters, establishing how effective (and deceptive) each of them can be, as well as finally tying up seemingly forgotten plot threads from storylines well over a decade old.
If you've read the others in this series, then you'll enjoy this. But if you're a seasoned reader of X-23, like yours truly, then this is over ten years of faithful payoff right here.
The ending was amazing, there were a few emotional pages there and I'm so proud of Laura. She's quickly becoming one of my favorite marvel characters. Plus, I loved seeing some X characters in the last couple of issues and having Laura, in her state of vulnerability, accepting their help. That being said, this was my least favorite volume so far, and I wasn't truly enjoying it until the veeeeery last issue. I love the characters, obviously, and Taylor's humour, but the story wasn't as strong as I wanted. A bit of a disappointment overall.
Really good read. The art isn't great, but it isn't terrible, either. It's a great full circle story for Laura, and I'm disappointed to see the series ending.
Simply fine. Enemy of the State is something that doesn’t need a sequel and, well, I guess it still doesn't have one. This is mostly EotS in name only.
Despite all the bad writing that's on its way from the All New All Different Marvel there are a few series that remain solid. Tom Taylor's All New Wolverine series still continues to be a great title. This is mostly due I feel to Taylor's gift as a storyteller. I am still not gonna call Laura Kinney aka X-23 Wolverine because I am against this idea that she could not sell without being attached to Wolverine's namesake. I mean look how great she was portrayed in the Logan film. X-23 is just as incredible and emotionally interesting as her father. In volume 3 Laura is being chase by a foe from her past that has the ability to turn her into a killing machine by unlocking her animal rage. The story starts with Laura and her little clone sister Gabby on the run. Along the way they are aided by a few allies some who can not be trusted. X-23's problems get more complicated as Nick Fury & SHIELD begin to hunt her down as an accused murderer. As I stated the series continues to be good. We learn more about what makes Laura tick through her experiences and through humor and perspective of young Gabby. Gabby's dialogue is always a welcome bonus. Taylor writes that character with such innocence and joy you expect from a kid. The artwork is okay but a bit off in some panels. The colorists do a good job with what they are given. Definitely one of the best X-men titles being published currently. There some good titles amongst the large library of books being put out by Marvel. It is just too many books to sort through. The series I recommend you check out are: Doctor Strange, Vol. 1: The Way of the Weird, The Mighty Thor, Volume 1: Thunder in Her Veins, Daredevil: Back in Black, Volume 1: Chinatown, Wolverine: Old Man Logan, Volume 1: Berzerker, & The Ultimates: Omniversal, Volume 1: Start with the Impossible.
Being a mere repetition of the original book by Millar and Romita jr this arc is just out of league.
The ultra-violence experimented in the original is here so dimmed you'd think you're in a Disney cartoon. Especially since it's pretty obvious that Marvel won't let Laura become a mass murderer. So the pseudo suspense point of the first issue is ridiculous.
Will Laura recover? Yes. Will she free herself from the influence of the X-23 experiment. Of course you she will you nincompoop! Is there any thrills in this volume? Nope.
I'll add a villain so ridiculously evil it makes you think Sauron of Mordor is a good guy and an art team just not up to the task to close it up.
Is there something to retain from this volume? Not much. There are a few good scenes and I still like Gaby but that can't last forever.
All New Wolvie started well. I hope this is just a bad time now forgotten for the next volume.
PS: please somebody pay Tom Taylor some lessons in french. Laura is a girl so when Gambit talks to her he should use "petite" and not "petit" which is masculine. Gosh, I hate it when writers try to pull that kind of stunt without a single notion of the foreign language they're using.
Finally! All-New Wolverine dives into Laura Kinney's backstory. We got a taste of Laura's backstory in Volume 1 and 2, but Volume 3 dives in by showing us enemies of her past who haunt her.
First of all, I feel really bad about calling Laura Kinney X-23. She is not X-23. X-23 is her past when she was a programmed murderer. X-23 has no control. X-23 has no sense of humanity. That is not Laura Kinney at all! Laura Kinney is Wolverine. Well, for now...I just read that the real Logan is still alive. Of course...But for now, Laura Kinney is Wolverine.
Laura Kinney really shines in this novel. We sense how much she cares about protecting her loved ones. We see what she is willing to sacrifice in order do what is right. We also see her terrible past and where she came from, through no fault of her own, but through the fault of sick and twisted lunatics with no semblance of humanity.
All in all Enemy of the State II is a fantastic read. I strongly recommend it to any Laura Kinney fans or any Wolverine fans. Of course you would want to read Volumes 1 and 2 first. Also, there is a great scene with Gambit, which I love. :) "Damn. I might start carryin' beans." :P It's so funny! Also, Jean Grey is in it, which I love. Jean Grey is such an awesome character. :)
